Beside myself with anticipation ---~--- This week has been all about stretching out of my comfort zone with glitch and also with the photography behind my source images. Previously I'd been working with Bitmap files and had a set of audio tools I knew were safe and so stuck with them. I've begun directly altering Photoshop files, as well as experimenting with Endian formats. One particular challenge I've had is that BMPs are constructed from the bottom right of the image going up, so I use that to know where to make my edits (i.e. the bottom of the image is at the beginning of the "song"). Photoshop files are not ordered this way however, presenting me with a real challenge at having any precision. It feels like I'm a tailor working the sawmill. I've even tried opening these files in a Hex editor to glean the structure that way with no luck. Any one with tips please drop me a line. Despite having to work in the dark in some ways, I've found them very resilient to alterations on a small scale and I find the color palette scatters in a different but interesting way. Here's an example of a PSD produced with Lightroom, edited with Audacity.

Route 40—Ohio, U.S.A.
It is dark now. Nets of snow tumble about us. We slide like fish, the road dissolving. And in the fields the farmlights chant: You have no land— You have no land.

I stand under the starry sky and feel the world creep in and out of my coat as in an anthill.

The storm puts its mouth to the house and blows to produce a note. I sleep uneasily, turn, with shut eyes read the storm's text.

In space the stars signal desperately. They're lit and quenched by headlong clouds that only when they shade the light betray their presence, like clouds of the past that scud through souls.

-"Unspeakable," Sharon Olds, from Stag's Leap

I'm a quarter of the way through Sharon Olds' Stag's Leap, winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. I'm reserving judgment for the moment, but some of the imagery is just too good to pass up.

Robert Bly reciting "The Dead Seal."
His reading style is strange at first, but after listening for a bit you realize the mix of detachment and surprise that he's trying to create with this performance. Fantastic stuff.

A wave comes in, touches his nose. He turns and looks at me -- the eyes slanted; the crown of his head looks like a boy's leather jacket bending over some bicycle bars.
