Wait... I agree that joking about alcoholism is super messed up, the subject isn't even remotely funny, but what race is stereotyped as alcoholics? I've never heard that before. Where I live it's just something awful that most families have or have had to deal with.

(x) Did you know that in Canada it was illegal for Registered Indians to purchase, own, or drink alcohol until 1985? And do you know why that is? Because the racist stereotype of the “Drunken Native” was (and still is) so strong that they made a law around it.

The Canadian government made and enforced a law on the basis of a stereotype. You could be arrested, thrown in jail, and if a woman, raped for being caught with liquor. Police did raids looking for it. 

And do you wanna bet where this stereotype even came from? If you guessed colonizers, you win a prize.

Indigenous peoples had no prior experience with the kinds of alcohol beverages brought over by the colonizers, and they took advantage of that. They would purposely get people drunk and addicted in order to get better trade “deals,” with the bonus being alcohol poisoning to finish their job. Saved them bullets later. And then people grew to call it just part of genetics. (Which is false.)

The stereotype continues today, largely because alcohol continues to be a popular coping method for the extremely large population with depression, PTSD, and more with no access to professional positive supports because the government can’t get off their fucking asses.

So, believe it or not, I hate alcohol more than just because my father.
