“Come. Hit me. Rob me. Do it knowing I’ve lived among you almost my entire life. Do it knowing that I’ve healed your children. Come in. Bleed one of your own!”
No one's doing it like Lirin in The Way of Kings. What a character!

if you’re a white creator and your brown/black characters are always sassy, reckless, aggressive or cold and your white characters are always soft, demure, shy and introverted you should think about maybe why you did that

Not to be a bitch but sometimes people engage with fiction in the most boring way possible, and nowhere is this clearer than in videogames. Like what you mean you hate a character just because they were kind of abrasive when speaking to the player character? "They were mean to me" and it didn't occur to you to wonder why? Like, what might their attitude toward you reveal about the world? About the social dynamics within it? About their own perspectives and backgrounds and personalities? Does it even occur you to ask? Would you only have liked them if they bowed to your presence and talked about how great you are? Like I'm sorry but you're so boring. How boring fiction would be if it cathered to you

In my Rhythm of War rewrite, Odium never switches his attention from Venli to Moash. As a downstream consequence of this, 100% of my complaints for both characters are resolved.

POV spoilers for day 10, but an interesting idea about it under the cut. Minor sunlit man spoilers, namely the true identity of its protagonist, to explain a thing
Tumblr media
So we've got 16 POVs + Hoid.
That means it's time to play a game of
WHO'S SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT EACH SHARD?
The best I can come up with, without knowing much about the shards involved in elantris/warbreaker stuff.
Devotion - Renarin
Dominion - Nale/Yanagawn/Rlain?
Preservation - Nale/Yanagawn/Rlain?
Ruin - Szeth
Odium - Taravangian
Cultivation - Nale/Yanagawn/Rlain?
Honor - Dalinar
Endowment - Syl
Autonomy - Venli
Ambition - Mraize
Invention - Navani
Mercy - Sigzil
Valor - Kaladin
Whimsy - Adolin
Virtuosity - Shallan
Reason - Jasnah
I think I did pretty good at placing 13 of them.
Dalinar, Jasnah, Shallan, Navani, Venli, Taravangian, and Kaladin are the most obvious ones. Adolin explicitly gets told he's whimsical in this book. Mraize is ambition because of his desire to advance enough in the ghostbloods to get off world. Syl is endowment because her bond endows kaladin with radiant powers. Renarin is devotion because he's the best boy and also his entire arc this book has been about learning to love Rlain and wanting to be with him above all else. Sigzil is mercy because of his dawnshard. Szeth is ruin because he's terribly efficient at killing but he's not a soldier so he's not valor.
The last three I am having trouble placing.
Yanagawn I mostly feel belongs as Dominion because he's the emperor and that is most evidently tied to the idea of dominion. But I could also see the case to be made that he has shown incredible growth as a person and therefore could be considered cultivation, and his association with Lift helps with that.
Rlain seeks the preservation of his people, the listeners, so I'd be most comfortable with him there, I think. He also has that vision of a singer lead city, which could put him as dominion.
Nale is a tough one to place once you have everyone else somewhere. You could argue he goes in preservation based on who he was - a protector of the downtrodden, or dominion based on his strict adherance to the law. The problem with both of these is it forces rlain or yanagawn to be cultivation and neither of them fits particularly well, but neither does he.
I welcome any thoughts about changes that could be made to make the last few things work. Of the 13 I'm more confident in, Szeth is the one I'm most open to hearing arguments for changing.

Dude Dami is the biggest walking meme on the planet, he's spun up out of the ether as next in line for Urithiru, hits his one Badass pose and then is never described doing anything more specific than going a place? I couldn't stop laughing every time he was called out by his nickname. Full book spoilers ahead but literally all he does across the book is
Get dropped in and hit his Pose - Ch. 63
Is "left in command" when Sigzil goes after Leyten - Ch. 63
"holds the bridgehead" to Narak 2 - Ch. 74
Has two lines of dialogue saying they should not retreat and complimenting Dalinar's tactical acumen during a strategy meeting - Ch. 74
"Arrived and distracted" a magnified one - Ch. 103
And then he has his conversation with Sigzil that has the most incidentally funny line in the book. "But The Stormwall was known for his accuracy" dude I don't know this guy from Adam! He's existed for a book and nebulously done 4 things! And then he walks off out of the story, never to be seen again - Ch. 118
And he doesn't even come up when Renarin takes charge in the end. Beautiful, no notes sell me a Dami plushie I'll buy 7 I've been walking around going "THE STORMWALLLL! DAMIII!" under my breath since I finished the book

It's always supremely funny to me that Dalinar doesn't learn his lesson about not barreling forward on his chosen path and giving up control until the veeery last second. It is down to the wire! Chapter 80, day 7, and he's still doing stuff like randomly using his powers to push Navani into Melishi's place while he's in the middle of defusing an argument. Navani is like dude what was that?? And he's like you're right my bad 😔👐🏽
Guy who is this👌🏽close to getting it for sooooo long.
