Anytime I think my Mandarin listening comprehension is getting a little bit better, I just turn on Chinese variety shows to give myself a nice dose of reality. I am completely spoiled by characters who talk one at a time, slowly, and with great enunciation in dramas. Turns out it's waaaaaaay harder when real people are talking quickly and all at once. That really keeps me humble and maybe more than a little discouraged that I will never be any better than a beginner.

can i take a moment of ur time to have Emotions about the fact that Wen Ning is so!! "treated as less than an adult" sometimes (in fandom for SURE and i wanna backhand some ppl for it, but like, in canon) like, wrh uses him as a bargaining chip against his own sister, said sister is (lovingly! but still) constantly fretting over him and telling him what he can or cannot do (and i dont blame her for it! but i cant be the only one who saw him interrupt her "i cant even heal my own brother" 1/2

Wen Ning is for sure a character who is often overlooked or underestimated by the people around him, and yeah, Wei Wuxian taking a moment to just earnestly compliment his skills from the perspective of a talented peer who’s recognizing another talented peer is really meaningful! It has to suck, to love his sister so much and to be largely treated as a burden that can be used to control her. That’s not how she thinks of him, but she is pretty clearly preoccupied with his fragility and her own need to protect him.

I think one of the most fun things about Wen Ning as a character is that despite the fact that he’s so often talked over he is often the person who winds up making big decisions for the people around him. His entire family is getting ready to go to war with the rest of the cultivation world and Wen Qing consequentially tells him very clearly that they can’t make friends with outsiders, but that does not stop Wen Ning from persisting in his loyalty to Wei Wuxian (and implicating Wen Qing in treason on his account without pausing to ask if she’s down for that, no less).  Arguably, without Wen Ning’s willingness to offer succor to the enemy Wei Wuxian dies trying to get Jiang Cheng out of Lotus Pier and the Wen win the war. Who’s zombie bait now, Wen Ruohan?

And sure, Wen Ning gives up a lot of his autonomy to Wei Wuxian both by voluntarily positioning himself as his subordinate and as a consequence of the whole zombie subject to his creator’s magical mind control thing, but at the end of the day when Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian have a serious disagreement about whether Jiang Cheng should ever find out about the core transfer, Wen Ning gets fed up and not only unilaterally makes the call to tell Jiang Cheng what happened, but does so in a deliberately cruel way it’s pretty obvious Wei Wuxian would not have been okay with. I think he’s the only character who’s actually a match for Wei Wuxian in terms of bloody mindedly following his heart regardless of the consequences or opinions of the people around him.
