what do image descriptions help with? ive seen them on a lot of images and everyone says they help people who cant see the images very well but i dont understand how! surely if someone cant see the image properly they cant read the text properly either? i hope this isnt rude, im just curious as to how it works

a screenreader is software which allows VI (vision impaired) and/or blind people to use a computer by doing what the name implies: reading their screen. it cant interpret images, however. a lot of websites have something called “alt text” which is a line of code that doesnt appear visibly, but describes the image and will be read by a screenreader. tons of social media (tumblr is a culprit) doesnt though—and alt text still requires a human manually captioning an image, isnt compatible with the iphones screenreading software, etc.

so captioned IDs make the internet accessible, especially on social media that is image-heavy.

additionally i primarily use tumblr on my iphone, which has accessibility features built in. its screenreading software is called “voiceover” and i use that sometimes. i generally scroll my dashboard with the “zoom” function enabled, which is like a magnifying glass for my screen. IDs allow me to read those without using zoom (which drains my battery life).

hey! you! hello!

did you know we have a discord server for folks to request image descriptions, audio captions and other accessibility stuff?

(did you also know that people have been chatting there about starting other accessibility projects and it’s made me CRY like three times?!)

including a description on original posts is THE most accessible thing to do on sites like tumblr. however, not everyone is able to add descriptions. that’s where the People’s Accessibility server comes in! share an image, video or audio clip and a volunteer will describe it for you asap! (content does NOT need to be taz or fandom related, it can be anything.)

obviously you can also join if you wanna help volunteer, that’s amazing too.

start sharing accessible content so that those with disabilities can be fully included in online communities!

artist friends!

for those who write image descriptions for your artwork: firstly, thank you! thank you for creating content that disabled folks can enjoy.

something I’ve been noticing more recently though is the tendency for an artist to post art without a description, then reblog it with one. that’s not ideal for several reasons:

the inaccessible version can still be spread, probably more widely than the accessible one

the accessible version won’t show up when people search for certain tags

it puts the onus on disabled folks to check the notes of every image on tumblr for an accessible version

The very best thing you as an artist can do is:

write the description directly beneath the image, before additional commentary

DON’T hide it under a read more or in a reblog

if someone else adds a description to your work, edit the original post and copy/paste the description there

the goal of accessibility is to make an experience as easy and straightforward for disabled people as it is for able bodied people!
