a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... I regularly check my favorite authors' bookmarks on ao3 because we all know that's one of the best ways to find fandom gold. But imagine my delighted surprise to see several Kingdom Come Deliverance fics in your recent bookmarks! Tag I am begging on both knees just begging BEGGING for you to write hansry. My brother in Christ I WANT to. There’s a couple things holding me back at the moment, one I just started a new job and life is kicking into busy season for my second job. Two, I just freaking started a multi-chapter more serious fic that is going to be my baby for a while. And three, while I’ve watched the entire kkd2 storyline on YouTube I haven’t actually finished the game yet. For the first time in my life I���m dealing with motion sickness playing it, the 1st person pov is just murdering me and I’m having to play in small increments at a time so I’m only just past the 1st act. I would like to personally live in Henry’s skin and play a bit more before attempting to write anything, although I have admittedly started doing some research for when I do write a hansry fic lol So no need to beg! For those of you around during the COVID days some of you probably remember conversations revolving around Ewan McGregor’s films and the riotously funny difference between his Star Wars role and the entire rest of his 90s and early 00s (read whorish) roles.

Anyway, one of my personal favorites is the 2000 movie Nora, where he plays James Joyce. I’m a big Joyce fan and for anyone else who is, you probably know the man was FILTHY. I was attempting to hunt down a publication of his collected letters and unfortunately that doesn’t really exist. But I did find a collection that included a few of his letters I hadn’t seen before.

This is tangentially related to a fic oneshot idea I had about Obi-Wan turning out to be a prolific filth writer in letters to Anakin’s utter horrified/embarrassed/horny disbelief. But I got sidetracked by the actual Joyce letters because they are shockingly kinky. Warning for nc17 debauchery if you go read them,but also have fun kids Joyce wrote freakier shit than most ao3 writers could ever think of.

I've been reading fan fiction now, and a/b/o, for longer than some of my readers have probably been alive (insane) and it's crazy to hear from fellow fans that they love my take on it so much, when I've engaged with so many wonderful versions of it through the years. hi! im not a star wars fan but the concept of the rise and fall of the galactic empire sounds very very interesting to read. how much star-warsy context do i need to enjoy it?

I think you could actually go into the book with very little Star Wars context. Kempshall writes the book as if it were a historical survey (ie: a broad historical introduction) and walks you through the timeline, context,and people of the story. It is one of my few gripes with the book, that is probably a positive for most other people. The framework of the book is of a historian with a vast understanding of a fictional historiography adding his research in dialogue with the historical narrative. But its published by DK and in the real world, is meant for a broad audience, so the writing and research level is college survey level, rather than advanced academic research being published on the Oxford press label level. I wouldn't consider myself a historian any longer since I don't work in academics anymore, but I was at one point, and so I really wanted to engage with a renowned academic writing a juicy, meaty historical work for a fictional world. Because I have read Kempshall's legitimate historical research and I know what he is capable of as a historian. But in actually this book is providing the pretense of advanced academic research, when it's difficulty level is an undergraduate (graduate if you're European) 101 course.

Again, for 99% of the population this is a good thing, and so I think is very accessible for someone like you, who may not be a historian and/or a big Star Wars fan. Kempshall does a really good job of organizing the book in a way that follows a linear timeline, but also examines specific topics within that timeline. So even someone who doesn't know a lot about the Star Wars universe should be able to follow the narrative of the Rise of the Empire, the examination of the Empire itself during its height of power, and then the fall of the Empire. And if you are a historian or familiar with advanced historical research, the survey level is still obviously the best approach for someone who may not be extremely familiar with the canon context being discussed.
