Okay, time to get real here. I’ve seen people online begging groomers to not shave double-coated breeds for the summer.

I legit agree with this. I personally just talked both a Pyrenees owner and a Newfie owner into furminating and doing hand-scissor and comb cuts instead of blade trims. I firmly believe in this. 

I’ve also had three dogs already this year come in with a botched home groom, razor burn, cuts, the whole thing. It’s not even June yet. 

I try. I’m sure you try too. We all try to talk owners out of shaving the Lab, the Golden, the Chihuahua for crying out lout. Yes, they’re hot. Yes, it’s summer. I’m hot. I’m sweating. I’ve said several times in the last week, “Dogs perspire by panting. Yes, they’re hot, but not because of their fur. Their fur insulates them.” 

I educate where I can, but if the owner at the end still wants to shave the dog, I shave the damn dog. And I don’t feel fucking bad about it. I don’t feel superior when I manage to talk them out of the shave, either. It’s just what it is. 

Even if I could afford to not shave the dogs, I still wouldn’t because of the aforementioned home grooms. Start with education, but then do what the owner wants. That’s our job.
