you know, people are always talking about how soft and sweet and innocent audrey is, and that’s fine because she is all of those things, but what about her strength? what about her determination and her perserverance and her grounded, practical nature? 

audrey may be vulnerable and naive, but she is a capable gal. she works two jobs, lives alone, and provides for herself. she is skilled in personal finance and first-aid. when orin disappears, she thinks about how his absence from her life will be financially beneficial. she saves the shop from closing by encouraging seymour to fetch his plant and pitching the business ideas they discussed together to mr. mushnik. she fashions a sling out of a scarf and shows up for work nursing fresh injuries– injuries she’s had to tend to herself with epsom salts and ace bandages.

this is a girl with no help, whose had very little education, and she still manages to stay safe and make a living in a neighborhood where most people end up homeless.

to say nothing of the fact that, all the while she’s saving her boss’s business, standing up for her friend, and hustling her ass off to make rent and keep food on the table, she is also dealing with the physical and emotional ramifications of her boyfriend’s abuse.

so sure, she may be gentle and kind and all of that good stuff, but let’s not neglect to acknowledge the fact that audrey is one tough cookie.
