Dyeing with avocado skins 🥑
Recipe:
4 whole avocado skins
1 liter water
Clean the skins from all the avocado leftovers.
Put them in a pot and top up with water so the skins are completely covered.
Heat up until it starts to simmer, not boiling- Leave for around 1h then take pot of the stove.
Wet your fabrics and wring out before putting them in the dye.
Leave in for as long as you want, the longer you wait the darker and stronger the color will be. The above swatches was left for 1 hour and 8 hours.
Take the fabric out of the dye, wash thoroughly and let it dry
We are very happy with the ens result and this dye is definitely something we will use in our collection!  It was very interesting to see the vast difference in tones from the swatches dyed for 1h and the ones dyed over night.  Fabrics used, left to right: Milk twill, Cotton poplin, Cotton twill, Cotton poplin, Cotton twill, Woven polyester and silk.

Natural dye-  Lesson 2
Experimented with some new dyes such as Dark iron, Reseda and Logwood.
Achieved many nice grey, purple, and yellow tones that we can use in our collection.
Tested out different techniques to create effects- Shibori, dip dyes, dye blends, citric acid and bee wax.
Still need to try making dyes that give a brown, pink, darker yellow and orange.

Mono-print 2 lesson
Focused on making more abstract flowers in combination with more graphic prints such as stripes, checks and circles
Could be very interesting to use for repeat prints
Contrast of masculine and feminine

Laser Cutting on Fabric
The laser cutter can be used to precisely cut or slash the fabric, the synthetic fabric is cut very sharp and neat and the cotton appears a little bit burnt afterwards, it also frays a little bit, some fray less like the ripstop due to its construction. Another use of the laser cutting machine could be for engraving details and for changing the feel of the fabric. On the soft side of the Sweat Fabric it burns on the surface and leaves a rough and severe area. The intensity can be adjusted. Depending on the setting it burns more or less and reduces the thickness of the fabric.
Interesting for:
For slashes to put the ribbons through
Manipulating surface feel through engraving
Engrave patterns or placement prints
Cutting patterns
Laser Cutting sizes available in the Makers Lab are 88cm x 128cm and 55cm x 88cm.
Tested Fabrics: Ripstop, Cotton Twill, Cotton Poplin, and Sweat.

Fabric Manipulation with Bee Wax
Changing the appearance plus making the fabric water resistant. The bee wax makes the surface  of the fabric smooth and shiny and also water resistant for a really long time. It is a sustainable and environmental friendly method and works really well on cotton. The wax can either be applied melted in a liquid form with a brush or can be rubbed on the fabric, then it can be blow dried with a hairdryer or ironed.

Experimenting with sublimation and Mono-print
The group focused on trying out different kinds of stripes, checks, flowers and splatter patterns - all in a more abstract manner.
Aimed to combine strict structures with messy and random elements in order to make it more free and relaxed.
For next time we would like to play around with different possibilities regarding how to give the print more depth.
We would also like to see how the sublimation prints look on dyed fabric.
