Benchmark

I'm doing Marc Brunet's digital art course, so I thought it'd be cool to make this benchmark illustration to show my skills beforehand! Once I've completed the course, I will redraw this piece to show my growth.

It's crazy because I haven't made a full-blown digital illustration since 2022! My rendering skills have completely stagnated at that point. Still, it's one of the most interesting things I've done.

Here, I tried harder with design and symbolism even if I'm not good at it yet! I was never satisfied with my art for years because it felt so dull in the pose, the composition, etc. For this piece, I have better ideas on how to convey the symbolism, but it's a good welcome.

Note: The piece was completed January 13th, 2025, but it will be posted on the 31st of the month.

Well, those are my current goals! I like how it rounds out to twelve. Honestly, this is an ambitious list for me as someone who doesn’t get a lot done. I very likely won’t achieve everything, but I still want to shoot for them! Absolute priority is working on my story, those outlines need to get done! I’d also really like to participate in Art Fight this year. Otherwise, we’ll see how things turn out.

Now, I want to talk about my specific plans for January. My priority will be on creating the character profiles and reference sheets for the two main characters of my story.

Every month I will post two development posts. A progress report half-way through the month and a final report at the end of the month. I’ll go over what I did (and didn’t) do as well my goals for the upcoming month.

I’m not quite sure what my posting schedule will be outside of that. Perhaps every Friday? We’ll see!

I've made a general schedule for 2025 pertaining to the development of my story. My goal by the end of the year is to finish an outline for the first book...

All I need to do is actually do it.

Why hello there! It is HogDraws back with a new drawing of my OCs! I wanted to do a straightforward piece of them to share with others and one that showed their current designs for me. I rarely do rendered nowadays, and even this one is in my sketchbook, but it was important to see where I stand to see where I need to go next.

These two are the protagonists of my dark fantasy story with the working title "Project Wilter". These characters have been with me in some form for over six years, but I've done little in way of actually writing it. Which sucks because telling these stories is really my only goal to do before I croak. It's time to lock in and get serious!

My plan for 2025 is to get a rough draft, an outline, or even just a thorough development of the characters! Just something! Anything that gets me closer to a finished novel.

Process sketches and thoughts:

I was really proud of this sketch. The characters turned I how imagined them. Of course, I had to take pictures just in case the render ruined things. I still prefer the rough pass the most, but I don't hate any versions.

My rendering skills are so rusty. Not only do I need to develop my story, I need to develop my painting!

The characters also need updating... the tall one on the left is currently named Xander, but that doesn't suit them or their culture anymore. Flynn on the right needs his wardrobe fleshed out more. Then there are all the other characters... and the entire world, cultures, magic systems.
