Pathfinder’s art is problematic
Ok. Real Talk. I love Pathfinder, but it’s art is problematic.
Pathfinder has become a big hobby for me. I never played when I was younger, but my husband and I picked it up a bit after we met. We love building characters and discussing the nuances of the rules and creating great stories together with our group. We even rolled D20s for initiative at our wedding (to figure out who would say their vows first. I won.)
Tumblr media
Even though I love pathfinder, that doesn’t mean I can’t criticize it for it’s downfalls. The rules that I love can be unclear and clunky. Multi-classing leads to under-leveling your character. And the artwork is overly sexualized and objectifies women.
The artwork leads us to some ridiculous questions while playing: Why isn’t this mummy rotting? Can I loot her moisturizer? Did the alchemist that made that long-lasting makeup patent the formula?
Tumblr media
Where do you buy fashion tape in Golarion? Does the sword’s pommel cause chaffing on her midriff?
Tumblr media
Do they have magical breast implants in this world? Why doesn’t her robe have any way to close in the front?
Tumblr media
How are those sleeves held in place? Is there a spell to make fighting in heels easier? Does everyone just have really warm thighs in this world, is that why the dresses are always split up to the hip?
Tumblr media
Why do reptiles need breasts? How did this quasit get such amazing cleavage? Is that dress an elaborate brassiere?
Tumblr media
How do they make metal armor in such a form-fitting shape? Is it done magically, and does it provide any support? Did this inquisitor look in the mirror and say “You know what my badass outfit is missing? Knives. Cleavage.”?
Tumblr media
To be clear: Despite the problems I have with pathfinder art, I think it’s a great game. The rules are fun, multi-classing leads to great characters, and the artwork is still - for the most part - pretty awe-inspiring. Alongside the art that makes me roll my eyes, they’ve also created amazing women characters and they are better than many other companies in the genre, but that doesn’t give Pathfinder an excuse. Paizo should and can do better.

I’m looking forward to the 2nd edition - and I hope it’s better.

6 pockets! Count ‘em. 6! And the pants are loose enough that you can actually put things in the side pockets.

I love it how when Snape draws out his wand there are audible gasps but when Mcgonagall draws her wand there people are screaming out of the way.

Betabrand Work-It Pants
These are made out of the same material as yoga pants, but they have a real zipper and button. Most importantly, they have 4 large fully-functional pockets. These yoga pants are more pant-like than the last pair of jeans I bought.

To celebrate the exciting return of Arrested Development, a few of us greeting card artists put our heads (and pencils) together and whipped up a (fake) mini-line of greeting cards that anyone can download and print out for free! It’s super easy! Download the high-res files here. They even come with a dotted line for the fold and should print easily to your basic home printer. And if you like them, please share them to your heart’s content!

Perhaps I will die too, she told herself, and the thought did not seem so terrible to her. If she flung herself from the window, she could put an end to her suffering, and in the years to come the singers would write songs of her grief. Her body would lie on the stones below, broken and innocent, shaming all those who had betrayed her.

Quote
When women silence and shame each other for calling out sexism in open source and receive approval for doing this silencing from male colleagues, the environment continues to be a difficult one for women to challenge sexism in — underlying the importance of male allies in calling out other men’s sexism. When women are attacked by both other women and by men for calling out sexism, that creates a hostile environment that discourages any attempts to improve the climate and to improve the community by welcoming contributors who aren’t straight, cis men. And when women in open-source feel that the only way to get approval from men is to attack any woman who challenges sexist behavior, that creates an additional barrier to participation by any women who do not accept the misogynist party line.

Dad: Why do you think they do that? Girl: Because the companies who make these try to trick the girls into buying the pink stuff instead of stuff boys want to buy. [x]
that awkward moment when a child understands the harm of forcing gender roles better than most grown male politicians.
