2 Tone Tuesday #5
haii~ gonna keep it short today. let me share the Song of the Day: Ghost Town by The Specials
this one's such a classic. easily one of my top favorite songs in the genre and in general.
from wikipedia:
released on 12 June 1981. The song spent three weeks at number one and 11 weeks in total in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart. Evoking themes of urban decay, deindustrialisation, unemployment and violence in inner cities, the song is remembered for being a hit at the same time as riots were occurring in British cities

2 Tone Tuesday #3
hii~♪ early start today, yea? first thing's first: Song of the day
One Step Beyond by Madness
Tumblr media
remember on our last post we mentioned how there was a 2 Tone fever and that the genre took over the charts for two years? it's true, 2 Tone was both huge and kind of short-lived since it belongs to a very specific regional and cultural context. that's not to say it lived and died in that time frame. 2 Tone inspired so much of what came afterwards, so in the next weeks we'll check a few more bands from the times and then move onward and backwards to check out the roots and modern music that exists thanks to this movement.
i should also mention that if you're into 2 Tone & Ska (or rocksteady, reggae, etc. you get it) please feel free to send me stuff you'd like to see featured on #2ToneTuesday !!!!!

Last day in Phoenix, last day at my job. Monday morning I start my new life as an irritating but beloved troll on ACHOOBOARDS.NET, the world's largest sneezing fetish community! Wish me luck!

2 Tone Tuesday #2
hii~♪
First thing's first, song of the day: On My Radio by The Selecter
Tumblr media
so, at least 9 of you don't know about 2 Tone, so let's get started with a brief introductory excerpt from Aaron Carnes' book In Defense of Ska. yeah yeah i know we're supposed to talk about 2 Tone, don't worry about it.
A Very Brief History Of Ska
Ska originated in the ghettos of West Kingston, Jamaica in the '50s; a bouncy, horn-driven dance music that mixed elements of jazz, the grittiest American rhythm and blues tracks, and traditional Jamaican folk music of the time known as mento. It's exact origins are unknown -even how it became known as "ska." If you asked ten Jamaican musicians from this era who invented ska, you'll hear ten different stories. Ska music evolved alongside Jamaica's independence and growing national identity in the early '60s. Those early ska tracks are lo-fi, wonky and performed on often out-of-tune instruments. They're also some of the best, most danceable songs ever recorded. Several artists from this time period were unsong musical geniuses -like trombonist Don Drummond- and deserve the respect and reverence we give American jazz pioneers like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.
Over time ska evolved into rocksteady, and then reggae, which branched into the spiritual and politically-fervent roots reggae, with a slowed down tempo and deep bass. In this era, Jamaican music gained international traction and caught the ears of hippies, punks, and counterculture music lovers. But in late '70s England, ska resurfaced. Punks, skinheads, mods, and Caribbean immigrants revived the genre into a new, politically charged, punked-up form of the music we now refer to as 2 Tone ska. These bands (The Specials, The Selecter, English Beat, Madness) were mostly mixed with white and black members, with short hair and snappy suits, modeling their fashion after '60s Jamaican rude boy attire.
England went full on 2 Tone fever in the spring of 1979 when The Specials released their debut single "Gangsters." 2 Tone bands surprisingly took over the British charts for almost two years.
Tumblr media
It was a season of pop music unlike any before or since. A handful of bands played a retro, punky, dance music, with very specific political messages aimed at the oppressive Thatcher government in England, and gave a big middle finger to the racist, right-wing fascist National Front party that was openly campaigning to remove immigrants from the country. And these bands were top 40!
Pop has never been as exciting and poignant as it was in the 2 Tone years.
-----------
ooph, ok. that's the end of the excerpt. exciting stuff, let's cut off here.
