HOLODANCER
Are you a dancer interested in new media? Would you like to get paid $160 to $320 to help prototype a mixed-reality performance? My name is Greg Bahm. Lately I’ve been working with this device called the Hololens. This thing: [Insert gif] I’m interested in attempting a project, where a live stage performance is enhanced with the Hololens. We’d have an audience of people wearing hololenses, and a performer performing (hopefully that’s you) and the audience would see digital content enhancing that performance. [picture] If you are interested in this project, send a video of your moves to [email account.] The pay is $40 an hour for 4 to 8 hours of work. More details under the cut.
What’s the schedule for this project?
This is a just a personal side-project, so the schedule is flexible. As long as you have some time available on the weekends, I can accommodate that.
Location?
My day-job is in Redmond, so we could use my office there. Or if you have a studio space you prefer, I could meet you wherever. Just so long as it’s in the Seattle area.
What’s the expected process here?
I’m thinking we’ll meet up for a few hours somewhere, and brainstorm on a performance you could do that could be enhanced with the hololens. Maybe the performance would be short (like a few minutes) or maybe it would be longer. Once we have a plan that might work, I’ll go off and build the digital content, and meet back with you when it’s ready to test. If the tests go well, we could hold a real live performance for some of our friends, and gather reactions.
What sort of dancing would be best?
The goal of this project is to explore a new medium, so I don’t want to be too prescriptive. Style and skill level are less important than creativity and passion. It is important that you be comfortable with adapting to the limitations of this new technology, but beyond that, follow your heart.
What’s the ultimate goal?
I want to learn about what’s possible in this space. Worst case scenario, I disprove the merit of this idea. I would still consider that a form of success, and I would certainly still pay you for hours worked. Best case scenario, we create an artistically compelling performance unlike anything people have seen before. Maybe it’s the first art of its type, like the first flipbook or the first daguerreotype. I think that would be pretty cool to have made.
