I love the costume design choice to make their futuristic hazmat suits sparkly with pretty patterns. As per starfleet customs, one must always be serving looks even in a hazardous environment

{ STYLE TREK }
Explore the wonderful n wacky world of fashion from the original Star Trek series! My fashion spread from the Ex Astris, Scientia zine (which fell through and I kept forgetting to post it) so please enjoy my 3-year old take on the space age of miniskirts and sparkly tunics.

OOHHHHHH i don't even know if it's intentional but in The Price (TNG 3x08), they have Ral (quarter Betazoid, hiding his heritage and empathic ability to gain an unfair advantage) and Troi (also part Betazoid, but open about her heritage and abilities) both wearing this identical shade of aqua blue, but his is tucked away with only a small window barely showing through a sea of unassuming gray, and hers is worn boldly and brightly from head to toe, and it is REALLY scratching my visual metaphor itch. LOOK AT THEM.

how neat is that!!

Propaganda for Carolyn!
Firstly, If you just look directly at the picture, you might be inclined to think the fabric is bright pink and plasticky. However, this is yet another trick of the TOS studio lights and film stock, famous for messing with the colors of fabric. The actual gown, which still survives, was more of a coral-y tone, which is corroborated by back stage photos:

And the shininess isn't plastic; it's actually silver brocade threads woven into the material itself.
Secondly, though the dress' construction looks simple, this is deceptive. From the front, it looks like the full, all-around bodice the other character has, but William Ware Theiss designed the dress so the weight of the cape would counterbalance and hold in place the bodice in the front, without needing to construct it normally, which is honestly an impressive feat of tailoring!
It must be admitted that because of the strict censors, in scenes of heavy action the dress had to be attached to her with special glue, since the special tape used nowadays had not been invented yet. However, despite this, Leslie Parrish (Lt. Palamas) said that she "especially loved Bill Theiss for that crazy gown."
(Further reading on the episode: These Are the Voyages excerpt. Catalog picture of the dress here.)

Welcome!
You can call me Frankie (she/her) and my main blog is over at @gloomth-and-wanderings.
I've long been fascinated by costume design, and it seemed like the perfect lens to explore my love of Star Trek!
I'm pretty busy right now, but in a week or two I should have more time to post. (Also, to be entirely clear, these reviews are just my opinion, and if I dislike something, I bear no ill will towards people who like it!)
Feel free to submit your opinions or asks for specific reviews! Can't promise I'll follow up, but I'll try!

Memory Alpha says they used a clear filament that went around his head! I'm guessing they hadn't worked that out in the very early tests though, because you can see the actor just holding it up. For when the VISOR was off and the connection nodes could be seen, they glued little lights to the makeup, which connected to a battery pack under the costume. Thanks for asking!
TNG Original Costume Tests: Geordi La Forge
I don’t have the actual documentary, just the Trekcore caps, so forgive me if I miss anything, and feel free to add on if you have more info!

The VISOR here looks a lot more like a plain old visor to me, what with the smoothness and shininess. Though it still looks rather futuristic. Maybe I’m just attached to the VISOR the way it ended up! Interesting that it still has the silver frame and gold middle color scheme! It just doesn’t have the tines.

Straight-up ICONIC look right here. Not only does the VISOR look fantastic, the whole outfit combo is just so happy. I usually don’t love the colour yellow. This is a major exception. LeVar Burton made a fantastic choice of clothes and I’m so glad it’s enshrined for posterity. I have an irrational love for this look. I think about it all the time. (Also: this is the source of a fantastic gif by @star-trekster)
Nice close up on the two different colours for the ocular implants of his VISOR! They ended up going with the red one, but the multicoloured one also looks cool! It looks more like Data’s inner workings.

There are also a few tests that are obviously not on LeVar Burton (I don't know who this actor is, but I think they also screen tested some general crew uniforms), but are still interesting. This one has a black frame and some sort of sparkly thing going on. To me, the middle looks weirdly recessed to me, because it doesn’t have the tines filling it in.

The on screen visor designs tend to have the tines more significantly overlapped (season 1, they’re almost all the way across, and in later seasons they’re connected to both the top and bottom of the frame), so the half overlapping tines combined (com-tined?) the slightly taller frame make it look a lot larger. However, it doesn’t reach all the way to the ears like the on screen version does.

TNG Original Costume Tests: Worf

Now I'm not completely sure this is a screen test; but it looks like an earlier state of development than the episode that went to air.

Obviously his hair is a lot longer. Honestly, I like this better than Worf's original little round smooth ...thing he ended up with.

His moustache and beard are also noticeably longer.
This concludes our series on the Next Generation costume tests! (Unfortunately, I couldn't find any for Dr. Crusher.) Hope you enjoyed this trip into an alternate TNG!

TNG Original Costume Tests: Wesley
I don’t have the actual documentary, just the Trekcore caps, so forgive me if I miss anything, and feel free to add on if you have more info!

Finally, a little more to work with! Wesley's got ✨ bangs✨ , and *Tim Russ voice* they are a doozy! His hair in the actual show starts out smoothed over and slightly feathery at the end, but not over his face. I don't actually have strong positive or negative feelings about these bangs, though I do like how Wesley's hair developed alongside Riker's.
I actually love his shirt (once we get further into tng costumes land you'll become aware that I am an irrationally big fan of Wesley's silly little wardrobe); it looks pretty comfy and I like how the colors (very nice colours by the way!) are divided horizontally on the sleeves as well. However, the pants look awfully baggy and they're kind of bland. I'd still totally wear the shirt though.

A close up picture because he's darling :D

TNG Original Costume Tests: Tasha Yar
I don’t have the actual documentary, just the Trekcore caps, so forgive me if I miss anything, and feel free to add on if you have more info!

Tasha's look didn't change too much from this test to the final show; her hair is dyed in basically the same way, but her bangs tended to be brushed to one side more.
Her makeup is also a little different; her lipstick and eyeshadow got a bit darker. Not a super big change, though!

TNG Original Costume Tests: Riker

The only real difference is in his hair; it's smoother than in the first few episodes, and it gets significantly smoother later. It's rather feathered, especially in the first picture.
The left is from Encounter at Farpoint (the first episode); the right is from s1e6. His hair gets brushed back and pompadour'd much more as the show goes on, and it's always a lot smoother.

I don’t have much to say here, but I’ve got the pictures so I’m including him for completeness' sake. He looks like Jean-Luc Picard!

His sideburns are a little less defined, that's all.
But I will note that toupee image again!

Early test shot of Patrick Stewart with “George,” a toupee.

TNG Original Costume Tests: McCoy
I don’t have the actual documentary, just the Trekcore caps, so forgive me if I miss anything, and feel free to add on if you have more info!
Mostly putting these here for DeForest Kelly’s grumpy expression. His appearance in the first episode was actually a surprise, and he was written only as "Admiral" in the script.

This looks to me like a post-TMP movie uniform minus the division badge and possibly the belt (the shot isn’t full length so I can’t tell). His hair is an impressively consistent color. It looks like they sprayed him with spray paint.

I think that this costume choice was a good idea, both because it’s more obviously tying the old generation with the next one, and also just practicality wise because this was filmed a few months after Star Trek V wrapped, so it was already there. However, since there are also supposed to be upwards of 70 years between Star Trek V and TNG, it’s probably good that they gave him something else.

The final look. He definitely looks a lot older, which was probably a good choice. Looks really silly in still frames though. Not sure where Theiss was going with the knitted (or purled, I guess) sparkly admiral’s cardigan with sewn-on epaulettes, elbow patches, and cuffs, though it does look nice and cozy. I think I’d prefer it without the epaulettes, implying that this was a fashion choice McCoy made for himself. It looks like he’s still got similar flared-leg pants to TOS, which is a cute little reference.
