As others have said in ways smarter than me. Flint was simply the Phenomenon that lit the match for TI to happen. In BS we see flint as a man who is constantly fighting to find a purpose for his existence. In the context of both TI and BS put together, his last words thus indicate he finally fully acknowledges what his true purpose actually was at the moment of death. Send tweet

James tells a story to Miranda in XVII about why he chose the name "Flint"; it is a story in which....
James' grandfather, a fisherman, speaks with a man (Mr. Flint) conjured up out of the sea out of nothing and then taken back for some unknowable purpose.
specifically, Mr. Flint disappears when the grandfather (presumably Mr. McGraw) goes to fetch some rum
decades later, inspired by his grandfather's tale, James McGraw decides to -temporarily- take the name "Flint" when he becomes a pirate. The sea does not allow him to give it back.
In Treasure Island, Silver and the other pirates on said island are terrified of the disembodied voice of Flint's ghost, repeating his last words on his deathbed in Savannah. Those words are:
"Darby M'Graw, fetch aft' the rum!"
Who in the world could Darby McGraw possibly be?
.....Darby McGraw is the name of his grandfather.
Following the continuity into Treasure Island, this implies that Flint, our Flint, from Black Sails, does not die "unmade" back into James McGraw, but instead dies fully subsumed within the myth of Mr. Flint, repeating the last lines his grandfather heard from him before he was taken back into the sea.
Flint's death in Treasure Island, is he himself returning to the sea, having completed his unknowable purpose as the inciting incident of Treasure Island

“Yeah, yeah, it’s sort of–to be put to a false choice of “which part of a cycle are you?” And then for Max to immediately not only figure out that there is a secret protagonist in that story, that Marion is the secret protagonist of that story, and that a woman who was tired of seeing her son be abused did one awful thing to be able to break that chain, and it was too late and it was for nothing and it was awful but that–I liked the idea that Max was able to identify the secret protagonist in her story, and so there’s something, I think, happening that is not completely inapplicable in the bigger story, that she is the one who was able to figure out a way to–essentially to get show to end, to get everybody out of there. It’s this constant recurring theme from Bonny, from everyone, that they are–they’re in these situations they don’t wanna be in, and if everyone is in a situation they don’t want to be in, it does feel like it requires someone to step out of, almost to step off the stage, and to sort of be able to see all the four corners of it, in order to find a solution to end it. So, yeah, I don’t know that she’s the secret protagonist, but she’s certainly protagonist to the story. She’s also the only one, I think, who was able to make that connection. That this conversation that’s running throughout season four is a bit of a fantasy. Can you leave civilization? It comes with you. It is a part of you and to separate from it is temporary at best, and I think Max’s arc, if you turn to this sort of three-dimensional model in the right light, the version of it that looks like her story, it’s a story about a woman who is abused by it, who thinks she can run away from it, who gets trapped in it to the point at which it looks like it will be her end, and then who learns how to tame it, and she’s the only one that’s really trying to tame it. Everyone else is trying to defeat it, or trying to kill it, or separate from it. She’s really the only one just staying there with the chair and the whip trying to figure out how to get it to do what she wants, and acknowledging that it is always going to be bigger than she is, and stronger than she is, but that it is manipulable, and so that makes her, I think, unique within the narrative.”

BS ending is peak comedy no matter who’s pov you consider, like take thomas in the fields of civilization’s oblivion or whatever. After being tortured in an asylum, you’ve now spent years as a political prisoner reliving the same prison day on repeat like a plantation camp adaptation of groundhog day (1993). And most (if not all) of that time you’ve probably had to survive on your own with nobody else to rely on, and any memory of your life from before grows increasingly distant because you don’t have anyone or anything to remind you of it. And then, on yet another day of labor under the georgian sun. You sense an intense stare and instinctually turn around. And what do you see? Some goth guy with a buzzcut and pierced ear who looks like he raided colonial hot topic walking steadily towards you and gazing at you like you’re the risen jesus. Hello what
