I don't really like the debate about Duke Thomas on if he's the "normal one" or "just as crazy" as his siblings because it's based on a false dichotomy that limits Duke's characterization in a fandom that already doesn't really know where to place him. The long story short is that Duke is like his siblings which is to say he does whatever based off of his sense of morality and he often has no scale of normal human behavior.
I'm pretty sure that the idea of him as the normal one comes from Wayne Family Adventures. (Though if this predates it in fandom please let me know). WFA chooses to play into his newness to give insights into the dynamics of Wayne manor and the larger batfamily.
I don't necessarily think this is a bad choice. I'm pretty giving to adaptations because it's hard to summarize 80+ years of comics into an easily digestible form. However, it was clearly written by a team who didn't have much insight on what to do with Duke outside of that, so his newness and uncertainty become his characterization and by extension him being the "regular one" in the family. The fandom that hasn't engaged with Duke outside of WFA run with that.
Which leads to jokes, skits, and fics where Duke is not only misrepresented but underrepresented. In a family filled with weird people with distinct dynamics what's the new, normal guy to do but sometimes stand in a corner and throw in a responsible one liner.
As a response people get frustrated with Duke's lack of inclusion in fics, skits, and jokes, so they bring up all the things that prove he's just as wild as his siblings (such as getting shot and thinking it's cool or jumping out of a cop car though my personal favorite is when he breaks into the iceberg lounge). However, without context this still isn't Duke. He doesn't just do insane things for the response he has a very clear characterization.
Duke is a child genius who has a huge problem with authority, primarily motivated by helping his community (though in the time between his parents disappearance and goign to live with Bruce he is a bit of an adrenaline junkie as a coping mechanism).
So, if we revisit some of the actions listed above:
Duke gets shot and thinks it's cool: This is Duke in his peak adrenaline junkie time, when he's riding the high of We Are Robin and all the potential negative consequences of superherodom haven't settled in yet. (This is also the period of time when he's getting into fights and is a bit of a playboy).
Duke jumps out of a cop car: This is Duke with his problem of authority (particularly cops) especially when they are trying to stop him from doing what he thinks is right. In this case, stopping him from We Are Robin duties. (This is also why he sneaks out of his foster homes looking for his parents).
Breaking into the iceberg lounge: This is peak Duke. It's him using his genius intellect to crack open a case and because he refuses to ignore it when he can help chasing the lead himself. It's also a little bit his adrenaline junkie sense as he's absolutely more reckless when there's a lot of external pressures.
TLDR: Duke is not the normal one. He's also not just a series of his wildest actions. He's a 16 year old, who wants to help the world and his own way of going about that, wether that's within or outside of our conception of normal behavior.

That's his nephew, man.
Started using Toonsquid on iPad for animating shit posts instead of Procreate. I don't like the drawing tools as much, but the animating tools are way better. The hardest part of this was finding references in neutral lighting for Prowler Miles' final design. There's only like this thing that I found from some article.

Here's a version with just the Mileses:

D'you ever think that Rio Morales looks at her son and thinks "when did you get so tall?" She knew that it would happen but it happened too fast, suddenly Rio has to buy new shoes and clothes for her ever growing boy. She smiles as she watches her husband happily make lunch boxes for him. "He's finally appreciating my chef expertise!" Jeff claims triumphantly. "I'm not sure if making a basic sandwhich and cutting apples are exactly chef expertise, amor." Rio teases, earning a side glance from her husband. She cackles. "Oh please, I know you're a good cook! I'm just happy he's eating, es demasiado flaco."
D'you ever think Rio sees how Miles' freckles become more apparent as he's older, how the sparse dots are not exact replicas of hers, but definitely taking after her? She sees the young man take after her lithe and slender form - maybe Miles will be lean like his mama, with her sassy side eye and pursed lips or her loud, lovely laughter. He likes that they both roll their eyes dramatically, how they both talk fast when they're passionate but seem to get comfortable in awkward lulls in conversation when nervous, how their fake laughs are always higher pitched than their real ones so he knows which jokes land. At the very least, Jeff hopes that Miles will be more like Rio. He sees so much good in his wife, his lover, his everything perfect in this world.
He thinks about how he took the chance of moving out of his "dad's" place with Aaron as soon as he got into college. Leaving the old man in his lonely place in Harlem, he didn't care if he had to wake up early to drop off Aaron to high school, he'd do it. It's not like his dad ever did it anyway when they lived with him. He was a boulder of a guy, but he hadn't really built up as much muscle as he has now at the time. Skittish, quiet, glasses - then gorgeous and confident nursing major Rio Morales came into his life and he never wanted to take someone else's last name so fast. She was like a beacon of light, specifically when things got rocky between him and Aaron. Jeff hopes Miles becomes more and more like Rio every day.
But Rio can't help but insist it's him that Miles looks more like. "He's got your forehead!" She explains, reassuring Jeff that that's a good thing. Yes, Miles and Jeff had the same forehead, the same tight curls, same full lips that would go in a deep frown when he's shocked, eyes bulging as he moves his head back and revealing a double chin (she thought it was so cute and funny.) They had the exact same smug smirk and hooded eyes when they're correct, they both had a dorky way of giggling when they were flustered, all snorts and giggling. She thinks about how their voices breaks every time they're emotional cus they're men who aren't scared to feel but still scared to show it - and with how Miles has been growing? "He'll be a giant like you, I know it!" She laughs as Jeff shakes his head.
But something in Jeff's heart aches when he sees that Miles busts a move in triumph like Aaron does, or how he smirks all charmingly when he talks to a girl - just like his lil brother back in high school. Jeff knows how Aaron's footsteps sound like when he's sneaking back into the house too late so he always catches Miles cus they sound the same. He feels something in him break when Miles smiled at him and he noticed that he got the same dimples as Aaron. What's he supposed to do when the boy walks like he's confident but too scared to really confident. He's too much like Aaron; what is Jeff supposed to do when he finds spray paint finger prints on his son's clothes just like he does when he does Aaron's laundry- oh.
He did Aaron's laundry. On Earth-42, Aaron has to remind himself of that when he sees Miles redo the laundry he folded just like how Jeff used to do. Those same hands always fiddling with something, quickly spinning his pencil while doing math problems, he's got that patient but firm tone when he explains carefully to Aaron whatever he did in Applied Physics just like how Jeff would help him with fractions as a kid. Miles G walks with his back too straight, and just like Jeff, he jumps ropes with the line that's between being endearing and being awkward when he talks to a girl. His nephew has that same, tired, far-off look in his eye that Jeff used to have, that same flickering ember that's awake enough to get up and do something right and it makes Aaron's blood run cold in fear every time he sees Miles G jump off a building too high or swing around too fast. He's too much like Jeff.
"Is he? I think he's sorta like you." Rio muses to Aaron in Earth 42. "He's all lanky like you, and likes going out late at night doing God knows what." She scoffs.
"He's doing good things, always studying and being a smartass like you." Aaron assures his sister-in-law. The two were never close, mere strangers, but a unlikely friendship had grown in the absence of Jeff; Rio had become a sort of big sister to Aaron, and he couldn't help but feel like he needed someone to guide him, even at his big age.
"He better." She pouts. In Earth 1610, Rio was telling Jeff the same thing. I mean, in every universe, Miles was their baby boy. "He's gotta have the best of us, right?"

All books are political. All fanfics are political. Writing words has always been political for Black people. In America for hundreds of years, if you were Black and could write or read, you would be put to death by white people. Writing for Black people is always a dangerous act of liberation because non-Black folks will always try to shut us up. There's a reason why the Maggots want to ban books. They want to ban us, our thoughts, and our words.
Write all that shit y'all.

Miles G literally has so much to carry and nowhere to put it down... in the way Rio 42 said "Miles, please. I got you to take care of, I got me to take care of, so help me out."
Not blaming Rio, she's in desperate straits, but it's just... if there's one thing about Miles Morales, it's that he's tuned in with his personal relationships. If Rio's in such a way that Miles acting kind of weird is threatening to push her over the edge, imagine how aware Miles G must be of that fact on a daily basis...
Ever since his dad died, probably, and Rio and Aaron give lip service to the idea of Miles G still being a kid, and he doesn't have to be the strong one right now, but Miles G looks past that and sees the way his family has suddenly become desperate and broken, and he thinks to himself there's nowhere stable enough to put this grief down. Not right now. Maybe not ever. Wherever he put it down would cave under the additional weight, he just knows it.
So he doesn't put it down. He keeps carrying it and helps his family with funeral preparations. All his extended family that have swooped in to support them help, for a while, and the whole thing almost feels bearable, but then the funeral passes and they have lives they need to get back to. He cried at the funeral, because that's just expected at that point, but he didn't let himself leave like he wanted to. He didn't let himself snap at anyone who said sorry for your loss like he wanted to. And when the funeral was over he helped clean up and very carefully didn't grieve too much.
And then he's on his own. And he doesn't tell his mom or his uncle about how he doesn't fit in with his friends anymore, how they think he's too sad and too serious now. He doesn't talk about the nightmares he starts having or the times (that only happen every other month or so, so it's not that big a deal) when he suddenly can't take a full breath and all the fear and despair in his mind melts together and seeps through his brain and his entire body and makes him feel shaky and sick. He doesn't tell them when he sees stuff on the news or when he starts thinking messed up stuff he doesn't want to talk about. He doesn't tell them when he starts figuring out just how fucked up the Sinister Six are.
He doesn't tell them when he finds the old Prowler gauntlets--doesn't tell them that he knows what his uncle used to do as a living. He doesn't tell them when he starts taking some of that old tech and figuring out how it works. He doesn't tell them when he starts sneaking out at night with the goal of taking down the Sinister Six's operations brick by brick.
Aaron figures it out, of course--swoops in and saves him when he was about to get caught. Miles G doesn't have any experience being a thief like Aaron does. They have a whole shouting match about it. Miles G yells at Aaron that maybe Aaron can put up with this shit every day, but Miles can't.
After several more days of going back and forth on it, Aaron agrees to train Miles G in how to be the Prowler.
It's exhausting work. Miles G moves through life in a haze. But it's also the most alive he's felt in a long time. It's release. It's purpose.
Still, though.
