i absolutely agree with all of this! there was such a bright, creative input in the elsanna fandom! i absolutely loved every minute of it. and a bit sad when it settled down and there was no new content.

Shipping Elsanna... helped me...

With the release of the new teaser, there’s been an upsurge of delighted conversation among fans. There’s also been (in certain places and among certain people) an upsurge of comments like “if you ship Elsanna, block me right now” or “@ elsanna shippers: don’t you dare even look at Elsa and Anna” or “oh god the elsanna shippers are going to come crawling out of their caves” and I just need to vent.

I’m not sure people remember how popular Elsanna was five years ago – thousands of fics, hundreds of pieces of fanart, artists who would go on to be amazingly popular making content.

It wasn’t just some horde of creeps being creepy. It was a flourishing community of young people who were desperate to find some way, any way, to express themselves and sort out their gender and sexuality. They needed a way to give voice to themselves and Frozen came into their lives and the ship brought them hope, comfort, joy.

Now I can already hear you saying, “That was five years ago! How can you still like it now?”

Maybe because being in that community helped me understand who I am. Maybe because finding a community of LGBTQ youth who were young and silly and innocent like me helped me realize I was a part of them. I realized I was trans because I came here, because I was able to meet and talk with people here, and I wouldn’t have made those connections in the first place if not for this ship.

Maybe because so many people in this ship have been nothing but kind to me.

Maybe it is just a nostalgia, a longing for a simpler time. Maybe I’m disgusting and sick, but I don’t want to be. I don’t think that I am.

We didn’t start shipping Elsanna because a cluster of nasty people said, “Hey, let’s think up the grossest thing ever.” We started shipping Elsanna because we needed a way to work through our feelings. Because something in Frozen resonated with us and we needed a way to convey that – in words, in art, in whatever means presented itself to us and made us happy.

And I hope the community blossoms with the sequel.
