So I keep seeing posts about how cosplaying at Sakura Matsuri is disrespectful
As I ramp up for Sakura Matsuri 2018 I kept thinking about this discourse from last year and decided to strike out a part that, in retrospect, came across as sounding really gross and like I was trying to say that my interests made me more important than Japanese or Japanese American voices. My reasoning behind putting it was because I didn’t want to make it sound like I was talking out my butt and making things up but I keep cringing whenever I think about it. I’m striking it out and not deleting it because I don’t want to erase something I said and get people on my back about that, even if I don’t stand by it because it was dumb of me to write and came off as more…I can’t get the right words, but more elitist/on my high horse/whitesplaining (even though I am part Lenni Lenape and identify as such too, I am predominantly caucasian and look as such and am afforded that privilege)/like I was looking down on others than what I meant it to be.
I want to apologize for that, let it be known that I was definitely a moron, and say affirmatively that I’m sorry for coming across at all like I think I know better than someone who is Japanese or Japanese American.
I stand by my general point that cosplay and Japanese street fashion are encouraged at the DC Matsuri by the sponsors and organizers, and that the sponsors and organizers aren’t interested in recreating an authentic Japanese cherry blossom festival experience. (They apparently let a group of Washington Nationals fans set up a tent about the team because, and I quote the guy running the stand as closely as I remember, “you basically just had to fill out the form and pay a fee to set up.”)
That said, I also stand by other statements I said regarding how cosplayers can and do invade spaces where they shouldn’t with cosplay, and I don’t think that’s okay (such as going to a Buddhist temple in cosplay, or such) and people should be talked to about that. I also reiterate that I think those who really dislike cosplay at the DC Matsuri should bring their concerns up with the sponsors and organizers and see if there are changes made about it.
