Kim Sala Over the Years (Years 1-5)

Year 1

·        Separation anxiety to the max; would cry at the drop of a hat

·        Low self-esteem cos Lin blasted her for small mistakes

·        Stayed inside own room as much as possible

·        Rowan slowly coaxed her out of her shell. Since both were in the same House, Kim clung onto her.

·        “…Why am I in the smart house? I’m not smart. I’m just…” *sobs* Cue Rowan cuddles

·        Slowly but surely, Kim got used to boarding school life. However, her social skills were lacking due to an undiagnosed mental disability. Unfortunately, she got caught up in the cursed vaults mystery.

·        Kim’s doormat personality became an easy target for Merula. The devil’s snare incident was so traumatic that Kim did not speak for weeks.

Year 2

·        Thanks to Penny, Rowan and Ben, Kim begins to open up more, bit by bit. They teach her that to overcome her fears, she has to believe in herself

·        Likes Herbology mainly because Professor Sprout is nice

·        Scared of the cursed vaults, not helped by the mystery involving Jacob, who as it turns out, had left a paper trail of destruction in his wake. Basically, the guy was a bad egg. Instead of being terrified, Kim is now curious.

·        In the Vault of Fear, Kim faces her Boggart: everyone abandoning her. Remembering her friends’ advice, she defeats it

Year 3

·        Kim meets Ismelda and Barnaby, Merula’s new accomplices, but the gang disbands rather quickly, thanks to Tulip’s dung bomb.

·        While she was happy at first, Kim begins to notice she has loads in common with Ismelda. The library is their safe haven and both are afraid to talk to new people. The two begin to study together and Kim finds a good teacher and potential friend in her.

Father: Albert Sala is the caring and well-meaning patriarch of the Sala family. While he was still working his way up the corporate ladder in the Ministry of Magic, he met his future wife and stepson. Although he says it was out of love, Kim doesn’t know why they got married largely because of the many clashes they had had while she was growing up. Ten years into the marriage, Albert picked up drinking but not to the point of mere drunkenness. On the bright side, Albert shows his tender side to Kim whenever he can, singing country and reggae songs to and with her, and even talking about designing one’s life. Kim has learned an incredible lot from him emotionally and she is absolutely grateful for this.

Mother: Zhang Yilin is the stern and withdrawn matriarch of the Sala family. Born to Chinese immigrants, she grew up with very little, leading to a sense of low self-worth. She tried her best to make a living in the UK and dated around for a bit to distract herself until she met Mundungus Fletcher. She thought he was the absolute bee’s knees when they first met. Mundungus thought, “Ehhh, why not?” They had a whirlwind romance, leading to Lin getting pregnant. She wakes up to a whole new world of trouble after that. Having committed the greatest dishonor against her family, Lin was abandoned and had to make ends meet until she met and married Albert, and had Kim afterwards.

The first Lin always thinks about are her two children, Jacob and Kimberly respectively. She had long given up on asking her husband about anything regarding their futures because of his nonchalant attitude towards that; “Don’t worry about it, things will work out eventually.” Lin did not take this well. So she took it upon herself to guide her children as best (and strictly) as she could. Because of her ingrained beliefs that men always fared better in society, she spent more time coaching Jacob, leading Kim to believe she loved him more than her. Lin’s negative attitude didn’t help either; “Kim, no need to argue about such things. Jacob and I have to prepare for his future. You don’t understand. So don’t be selfish.” Pet(s): None. Kim is not a pet person. Many bad experiences have led to her not wanting any animals or plants or anything that could die on her in the future. This may or may not change in later years.

Worst Class(es): History of Magic before Ismelda swooped in and tutored her. At first, she thought it was boring because it had nothing to do with the present. Ismelda taught her that learning about ancient history is to discover the foundation of any culture. Defense Against the Dark Arts, she had low confidence in because she found casting spells there difficult. This provided teasing fodder for Merula to poke her with. Potions, she had trouble with, too, because she roared with laughter at Tonks’s silent jabs at Snape one too many times. From then on, she and Tonks were seated separately, but sitting next to Tulip brought a whole new level of chaos. While Tonks was an expert on verbal smackdowns, Tulip was the tactile mistress of mayhem. But more on that another time.

Best Class(es): Charms is a breeze, Care of Magical Creatures is fun, but Flying is her absolute go-to. Kim finds out life is best lived while taking risks and takes to flying like a peregrine falcon.

Least Favorite Teacher(s): Professor Snape because he always looks and acts like he has a week-old fish under his nose. Professor Binns because he’s a boring old fart. Professor Kettleburn, though well-meaning, is a bumbling old goof.

Quidditch: Kim is a Ravenclaw Beater. While searching for the position she was best at, she found Rath beating Bludgers at training dummies and got curious. Very soon, she was under the begrudging apprenticeship of the Star Beater. She found Rath frustrating to deal with as her face was always this unreadable pout. Like is she thinking or is she constipated? Probably both.

Quarantine tips for students

🎒 Treat it like you’re actually going to classes.

Take a shower. Get dressed. Don’t just roll out of bed into Zoom. It’ll put you in the correct mindset to get some work done.

☀️ Use this time as a chance to operate based on your natural energy cycles.

Work when you’re most productive. Rest when you aren’t. (Unless you have non-recorded, scheduled classes/meetings.)

⏰ Create a routine.

You’ll get used to doing the things you do and you won’t need as much motivation to get them done each time.

🎯 Set daily goals

You’ll have an idea of where you’re headed and how much you have to do for the day.

🏡 Establish boundaries by creating a separate space for doing work.

Keep coming to this space when you have to do work and don’t allow any distractions there - this will train your brain to focus.

☎️ Stay in touch with people.

Avoid feeling isolated by calling your friends, spending time with your family, roommates, etc. Social support can help reduce stress.

🎨 Keep your spirits up by spending time on your hobbies, exercising, doing something creative etc.

Coloring, doing yoga, and playing music/singing/listening to music have been shown to improve mental health.

📚 Exercise your brain

by learning a new skill you’ve always wanted to learn, reading a book on your TBR, listening to podcasts, etc.

🌿 Spend some time every day in nature,

whether it’s going out into your backyard or balcony or just opening a window.

😷 Take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating properly, etc.

This will make you better equipped to fight diseases, and you’ll feel better in general.
