Extremely Aromatic World 1502, Acrylic,coffee on canvas, 95.4×95.4cm 2015 [작가노트] 커피 전문점들이 우후죽순 건물들의 한 켠에 자리를 잡은 것은 이제 익숙한 풍경이 되었다. 나 역시도 그 익숙한 풍경에 동요가 되어 테이크아웃 커피를 손에 들고 다니는 것이 무척이나 자연스러워졌다. 밥 한 그릇의 가격을 훌쩍 넘는 커피의 그윽한 향과 맛에 취해 커피한잔의 여유를 부리는 동안 커피생산의 1%남짓한 임금을 받으며 일을 하는 현지 노동자들의 삶은 고생스럽기만 하다. 모든 우리가 누리는 행복함의 이면엔 누군가의 희생이 따르게 마련일까? 세계에서 석유 다음으로 소비가 가장 많이 되는 것이 커피라고 한다. 매년 수백만 톤에 이르는 커피가 수확이 되고 그만큼 소비가 되지만 이렇듯 우리는 지구촌 어딘가에서 벌어질 노동착취와 노예제도에 암묵적인 동의를 하며 살아간다. 자본주의의 거짓된 화려함 속에 감춰진 쓰디쓴 커피의 맛은 이들의 고통을 너무나도 잘 드러낸다. 이 세상은 진한 에스프레소 커피의 향처럼 매우 향기롭지 않은가? It is now a familiar sight to see coffee shops mushroomed around the corners of buildings. I, myself have become so accustomed to this sight that it has become very natural for me to walk around holding a take-out coffee in my hand. While I am enjoying my leisurely time enraptured with the deep aroma and taste of a cup of coffee, which is well over the price of a meal, the lives of the local laborers, who receive wages of 1% or so of the coffee producer price, can only be hard. Can we take it for granted that for all the happiness we are enjoying somebody has to sweat and sacrifice to provide? It is said that coffee, next to oil, is the most consumed product worldwide. Millions of tons of coffee is harvested and consumed that much every year. As such, we live in tacit consent of the exploitation and slavery happening to labors somewhere in the global village. The fabricated splendor of capitalism hidden under the sweet and bitter taste of coffee clearly reveals the pain of these laborers.
