Turning this into its own post because it's a really insidious trend I've seen across fandoms with canon wlw ships, the most recent example of course being "JayVik and/or TimeBomb is more queer than CaitVi"

The "This wlw ship isn't as queer as X mlm or f/m ship" talking point is the most common one I see thrown against wlw ships and is just an extension of real world same sex relationships between women not being taken seriously.

Usually, this gets dressed up in new age queer theory bullshit regarding character dynamics, like the evergreen classic "Korrasami is heteronormative because Asami is the handmaiden and Korra is the feudal lord" or "This male character cried once therefore this ship is more queer". No matter what the specific argument is, at their core, these claims all have the same underlying message - "This ship between two women doesn't love each other as much as my f/m or mlm ship."

That's it. That's what it boils down to. It's a "progressive", new age "queer" way to argue that a wlw ship isn't as romantic or authentic as this other mlm or m/f ship. It is denying the depth of the feelings that these wlw characters have for each other and, thus, the validity of the ship. They're not really in love, they're this other superficial thing, and thus their "queerness", their radical act of loving each other in a world that despises them for it, is not really there.

That's why I say that this argument is just an extension of society at large not taking same sex relationships between women seriously. They're not really in love, those silly women, they just really like each other in a gal pal way, not that earth shattering romance that my mlm or m/f ship experiences. All of which, of course, goes back to being sparkling ✨️misogyny✨️.
