reasons for disliking hort?

I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED :D

so i’ve always been fairly neutral on hort, i saw him as a funny character and kind of brushed off some... alarming stuff, but when i read the camelot years. oh boy. everything, even stuff in the previous books became clear to me, i tell you.

to start, i don’t like how his entire character arc is about him trying to gain sophie’s affection? he had so much potential! what about wanting to uphold his father’s legacy? what happened to wanting to prove himself and give himself a chance for a fairytale? why was all that thrown out the window in favor of him being self sacrificial and basing his entire LIFE around sophie? who? doesn’t even like him that way?? (well, for the majority of the series, she didn’t, but. you know.)

and then we get to his treatment of sophie. oh boy. the main reason i strongly dislike hort is how he acts entitled to sophie’s love. book 1 and 2 were okay, he has a typical schoolboy crush on the popular and powerful girl. but in book 3, he’s on a whole new level. his speech in the hot tub was absolutely disgusting. the kiss you and kill you comment was absolutely terrifying. here his blatant obsession for sophie is revealed. like,,, why? he claims that sophie hurt him so much by constantly going after tedros or rafal when he and sophie didn’t share that many conversations, and no, filip doesn’t count because i’m fairly sure hort wasn’t attracted to filip and even then, sophie was spending more time with tedros back then. we do see a few hints of hort’s genuine feelings in the third book. hmm.

but in book 4. oh my god. him treating sophie deciding she wasn’t interested in relationships especially after rafal abused her as a “single phase” which he was waiting out so he could date her? him accepting her job offer just so she would date him? him blatantly trying to ORDER her to stay with him instead of leaving with agatha on a quest? i’m not kidding, this is some real life crap that adults do which is so creepy and not okay? and throughout all this, the other characters refer to him as a “poor weasel”. if they could recognize rafal as a creep, why can’t they notice anything wrong with hort’s behavior?

then he decides to date nicola, seeing as sophie won’t change her stance. okay. cool. it’s nice he’s moving on (but that’s his student isn’t that uh weird? anyone? soman? anyways). they seem to be progressing healthily, but in a crystal of time. oh god. it seems fairly evident that hort is emotionally cheating on nicola with sophie. he is still invested in her, still chasing after her, yet labelling her as a friend, even though it’s clear to everyone she is much more to him. yet despite this he is still leading on nicola.

spoilers for one true king in one true king! he called sophie his soulmate in front of nicola i kid you not how embarrassing does he get? and of course, the breakup was passed off as nicola’s fault, for calling him childish and whatnot boohoo as if he didn’t straight up emotionally cheat on her for weeks?? and of course, after this awful attempt at a love story, sophie magically falls in love with him after being apathetic towards him for five books straight. amazing.

another main problem i have with hort besides this pathetic love story train wreck is how he treats others in regards to sophie. he is beyond AWFUL to agatha who has been nothing but friendly to him in the entire time they’ve known each other. he’s so jealous of agatha and tedros for being sophie’s friends even though he’s not even in a relationship with her?? not to mention how awful that would still be even if he was in a relationship with her. it’s downright controlling, toxic, and abusive to be that jealous of your crush/significant other’s friends and to go as far as trying to KEEP her from them. which he did! he tried to stop sophie from going with agatha on the ship. he verbally abused agatha for not telling him sophie was nearby even though she was her friend and could take care of her and sophie wasn’t even hurt?

hort is absolutely disgusting and his victim complex which soman keeps enforcing to get fans to feel bad for him even when HE is the one hurting others, and it actually works! so many fans sympathize with him which concerns me because i don’t think it was written to be very clear how wrong hort’s actions are because soman keeps brushing them off! realistically, sophie would have probably been scared or creeped out by hort.

spoilers for one true king i hate how this series has him win in the end and have sophie fall for him. it sends an incredibly bad message to readers and says that if you harass and obsess over your crush enough, no matter how long it takes, they will eventually fall in love with you. no. absolute no.

anyways wow this ended up really long. i just have so many problems with his character.
