妖術についての人類学の伝統的な説明の1つに、妖術観念が人々が経験する不幸に対する説明を提供しているのだという「災因論」的説明があるが、これは妖術の物語の効果の1つの側面を指摘したものである。しかしこの主知主義的な説明は、出来事の説明を求めるという人々の知的欲求に強調を置きすぎている。実際には、説明を求めるという知的欲求は副次的なものにすぎない。出来事が説明される、つまり現実が物語に絡みとられ始めるやいなや、そうした物語を生き始める人々自身の行動が、ますますその物語に合致した現実を生成していき、それによって現実がますます物語に絡みとられていくという呪縛のプロセスが重要なのである。
