DNS Hosting - Improve Website Availability with Reduced Redundancy
What is a DNS Server?
In the world of networking, computers don't go by names like humans do. Instead, they go by numbers which is how all electronic devices communicate. DNS - Domain Name System resolves names to numbers, to be more specific it resolves Domain names to I.P addresses. A DNS server maintains a directory of Domain names and translates them to IPs.
So for example, you wanted to go to a certain website, you would type in the domain name of the particular website. So many people naturally come to believe domain name is the only way to lead you to a particular website which is not right. Technically, I can just type in that domain's I.P address and achieve the same result. That would be a tedious task, after all, deep down we are scared of numbers. So DNS is doing the simple task of mapping addresses which means it is not that hard to set it up.
Hosting your own DNS servers
While owning your own DNS servers might sound exciting, there are some particular issues you need to address. Hosting your own DNS servers usually means that all queries will be resolved from a single physical location. If a visitor far from your DNS server is trying to access your website, the DNS response can take a while to reach them. If your DNS server malfunctions or becomes unavailable for some reason it won't be able to provide service. So it will require you to debug it and deploy a fix.
Running your own DNS servers requires knowledge and skills to keep up with latest security measures so servers run smoothly. You have to be constantly aware of DDOS attacks on your DNS servers to make sure your website performs consistently. If you're a Blogger or a Business Owner, this requires a lot of skill and effort. So, it is always a safer option to allow someone to do it for you.
With the number of DDoS(distributed denial-of-service) attacks increasing by the day, a suitable DNS host is crucial for your website. Your website's overall Performance can go down if you ignore this basic checklist.
