Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (July 28, 1929 - May 19, 1994)
Jack used to watch the White House television tour all the time. It was so sweet the way he was proud of me. I was so happy that I could do something that made him proud of me. I was never any different once I was in the White House than I was before, but suddenly everything that had been a liability before: my hair, that I spoke French, that I didn’t just adore campaigning, that I didn’t bake bread with flour up to my arms… When we got in the White House, all the things that I’d always done suddenly became wonderful to people. I was so happy for Jack that he could be proud of me. It made him so happy, and it made me so happy. – Jackie Kennedy, 1964

“On the flight I looked up at one point, and there were three of the bravest women in the country, Ethel, Jackie and Coretta, speaking to one another about their mutual despair. It was very touching Very touching.”-Lem Billings

It’s just all so unfair, Ethel said to Jackie holding both of her hands.
It was November 1973, ten years since the assassination of President Kennedy. To commemorate the sad anniversary, Ethel hosted a memorial Mass in the large pool house at Hickory Hill.
Ethel and Jackie usually didn’t spend a lot of time commiserating about their sadness. However, gatherings for the anniversaries of Jack and Bobby’s deaths couldn’t help but bring to the fore the widows’ mutual anguish.
Just look at us, Ethel said, weeping. We’re all wrecks, Jackie, and we’ll never get over it.
Oh God, Jackie exclaimed now swept away by emotions and also crying. Nothing could be worse than this, could it? Could it get any worse? Ethel agreed. It didn’t have to happen, Jackie. It just didn’t have to happen.
