‎⏳ علم الرمل 👣 Geomancy or ‘divination by earth’ refers to an ancient system of divination which is typically performed by ‘cutting’ or ‘striking’ dry sand to draw on its service, generating points and subsequently figures. It revolves around a set of sixteen domino-like geomantic figures, each comprised of four stacked horizontal rows of either single or double points. In order to consult the oracle to receive answers and insights for queries, the geomancer can turn to a potentially infinite array of procedures for randomly generating an either odd or even number of points, which then accumulate to produce one or more of the sixteen figures. Each of these has traditional names and associations which the geomancer draws on to produce tailored interpretations and predictions. As a belief and “cult”, the Sudanese Zar is not static, it is continuously modified in response to cultural and community developments. And yet - even though the Zar did not originate during that time - many visible forms such as the nature of some spirits and specific ritual acts that are preserved today, derive from the 19th century Ottoman rule. Many spirits still represent the “the other”, foreigners, colonists, concubines, travelers, sufi saints and their different experiences - sometimes transformed into a more contemporary interpretation of their former selves. Laws particularly subjugating women are found under its main components; the Criminal Act of 1991 and the Public Order Act of 1996.The later has now been scrapped; its expansion and codification had significantly stretched state control over personal behavior and freedom of expression in public life and particularly limited women's participation and presence socially, culturally, economically and politically. By implementation, the state inevitably took the role of the guardian of morality, leaving all citizens are at the mercy of the Public Order police and their assessment and interpretation of these vaguely stated laws that are naturally hard to defend. The former regime has been consequently targeting women and women’s rights-based activism under the pretext of these laws, the same way it has been suppressing any potential threat to their establishment. (Further underlining the centrality of gender politics as a means of societal control). 📡 The revival of the Islamist movement in Sudan grew in a culture that was already patriarchal, however, through the Islamists’ self-serving move to create „their own“ women’s organization, they have not only profited off the momentum the general women’s rights movement was gaining during the 1970s, they also asserted their „modernist“ image and extended their direct control over the whole public movement. ⚜️ 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐙𝐀𝐑 𝐖𝐄𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 Once a Zar possession and the demands of the spirits have been determined, the ‚chosen‘ person can come to terms with the spirits through different initiation rituals, depending on the case and the person’s abilities. The most powerful and elaborate Zar (sacrificial) ceremony usually lasts from 3-7days and is almost exclusively conducted for and by women. This ceremony draws many interesting parallels to a traditional (Sudanese) wedding; the zar ceremony is preceded by a leilat al-hinna (henna evening), where the woman, also called bride, al ‘arusa, applies henna to her hands and feet. If not otherwise ordered by the spirits, she then dresses in a white dress and adorns herself with gold and silver ornaments and amulets. After a recitation of al Fatiha (the opening Surah of the Quran), the ritual possession begins accompanied by singing and dancing. In a next step, the sacrificial animal(s) are carried (or led) by the bride in a procession 7 or 10 times around a table with various offerings such as candles, fruits, nuts and desserts. Like the bridal procession, this is also called al zaffa. • Spirits and Celestial Bodies • One of the most fascinating aspects of working with Zar Spirits is the interrelation between their characteristics and those we ascribe to the seven planets and their association with the seven days of the week. For example, when working with powerful „black“ Spirits, the Zurug, one would conduct an offering and / or seek their guidance on a Satur(n)day. Similar to Saturn, the medium is usually dressed in black when inviting them. They are said to be strict father like figures that rule over courts (justice), death (time) as well as discipline and only to be consulted for serious matters. Likewise, some members of the Habash spirits operate on Tuesday; like the fiery planet Mars they are associated with the color red and are consulted for matters around victory, protection and passion.
