Join Leadership for Educational Equity!
What is LEE?
LEE is an organization designed exclusively for CMs, alumni, and staff of Teach For America that gives us a space to engage around issues of policy and politics (in a way that we can’t through TFA because of our non-profit status). It is also a great source of internship, fellowship and job opportunities that may be useful for you as you transition to alumni life.
Why register?
Given the upcoming school board elections in Houston, this is a great venue for sharing your thoughts on the candidates, and connecting with others about volunteer opportunities.

Here are the details about the TAKS/STAAR Olympics session that we discussed at ACE #3, happening this Sunday (2-5pm) in the TFA-Houston office. If your kids needs extra practice before they take exams this spring and you aren't sure how to invest them, what to re-teach, or what an effective system for all of this might look like, make sure your prioritize this Sunday's session.
It's going to be an excellent opportunity to hear from corps members who have implemented this strategic review, and the majority of the time will be spent working on your plan, collaborating with peers, and getting advice from staff and experienced 2010 CMs.
RSVP at the link in the title of this post, and feel free to spread the word and bring your other math/science teacher friends. Please arrive on time with any review materials from your school, your most recent tracker, and resources you used to review last year (2010 CMs).
See you all there!

How are your students doing?
I know lots of data is being rolled up right now, so please send it my way.
If you teach at YES Prep, the AP score report for the common assessment is the best document to send. If you have multiple preps, please include both reports. Shout out to Pam Hyde '11 for already submitting her data!
If you teach at KIPP, please submit your most up to data mastery tracker indicating student performance by objective.
As we discussed at ACE #3, having current data from every member of our team drives decision-making by me and for the region as a whole, and enables us to have much more productive 1:1 conversations. I can't fail to mention, of course, that I've seen such tremendous growth during my time in your classrooms recently, and I want to make sure we have solid quantitative evidence of your success!

Quick call to action: please take 90 seconds to complete this survey for the upcoming March 1 event “What Comes Next.” This event is planned by our Alumni Affairs team to support you as you transition from corps members to alumni – even if you know exactly what your plans are for next year, this event will still be inspiring and highly impactful for you.
Please take the survey (at the link in the title), and you’ll be able to select your preferences for each session based on your specific interests. I personally will be attending, so I’m excited to see you March 1 at the Crowne Plaza Downtown.

Google is hosting a science fair for any students age 13-18. Imagine a whole class developing their own project or dedicated group after school working hard, conducting research and publishing their findings via YouTube videos and a Google site. Submissions are due April 1, 2012.
Aside from the real opportunity that this presents for you and your students, I also love the tagline: "Everyone has a question. What's yours?"

School Choice Rally
A message from your fellow Houston CM, Rachel Kottler:
Fellow Corps Members,
This week is School Choice Week, a week to celebrate the ability families have to choose to send their children to charter, magnet, or other specialized public schools!
School choice one aspect of education reform that Teach for America alumni have taken the lead on and drastically expanded. The concept of school choice is what allowed 3 fellow Houston Corps alumni to start KIPP and Yes Prep, two charter school networks who currently have over 12,000 enrolled in them in Houston! Those are 12,000 students who without school choice, would be forced to leave their teachers, classrooms, and college-focused school communities. Not to mention, without school choice current corps members and alumni would be out of jobs.
With our voice and the voices of the communities we serve in Houston, we can ensure school choice remains an issue that local politicians support. We can also ensure that the children in our classrooms and their families are aware of school choice and how their opinions matter.
How will we do this?
By coming out to the Houston School Choice Rally on Saturday, January 28th from 10:30-12:00! The rally is being held at KIPP Explore Academy, located on 5402 Lawndale Street (right off of the Telephone road exit of 45).
Why You Should Come
· You will get the chance to hear from local politicians and politicians running for office
· You can share your support for school choice with politicians and show them that voters care about school choice and education reform
· You can help convince members of our school communities to get registered to vote during the event
· You can network with alumni and like-minded individuals about education reform
Your voice matters. Make it heard this Saturday, January 28th, from 10:30-12:00 at the Houston School Choice Rally!

Mid-Year Survey
Check your email for a mid-year survey that has been sent to you from our national team at Teach For America. You should have received a unique link / passcode at which you can complete the survey*. Your feedback is critical to ensure we provide the support you need for you and your students to be successful, so please do not delay in completing this. (For those of you who might have resolved to be more organized in the new year, perhaps you might block out some time this Friday or Saturday to do this.) Remember, surveys are a requirement to be in compliance for the AmeriCorps award.
*If you do not think you received this survey link, please do a thorough check of ALL email addresses you might have provided to Teach For America... school email, college email, Gmail, etc. If this is unfruitful, please email me and I will send along your link.

Welcome back and happy new year, team!
Hopefully you had a chance to rejuvenate yourself over the break with delicious meals, time with friends and family, and some well-deserved time away from lesson plans.
Let's all challenge each other not to view the return to school as a return to the daily grind... instead, let's view it as an opportunity to make good on our promise to provide the highest quality learning experiences for our students and to ensure they leave our classrooms as driven, curious, and creative problem-solvers.
After you watch the above video for some January inspiration, you can go here to view more videos and even make your own post sharing your reason that we need to tackle the achievement gap now more than ever.

If you teach at YES, submitting your data is SO easy!
While mastery trackers are super helpful, the YES Prep common assessment score reports are a very recent and reliable indicator of student progress. Submission of these reports will most definitely ground our conversations as well as move many of you into compliance with AmeriCorps requirements.
Take the two minutes to complete the following steps ASAP.
Log in to Navigation.
Click the Content Team tab at the top. (Nothing that drops down... just the tab.)
Click Common Assessment Reports.
Click AP Scores Report.
You should see a spreadsheet with blue headings and which includes raw data. Click on the disc icon above the data and select Excel.
Your computer should have downloaded an Excel document that includes CASR_AP Scores Report in the title. Send that to me via email.
Repeat if you have multiple courses that you teach.

The discussion board for the KIPP College Completion Report is up and running. Click the link above! Alternatively, whenever you sign into TFANet, click Groups in the blue bar across the top of the screen. Then, on the right side of that page, you should see "Geoffrey Roy's Cohort" in My Groups. Click there and go to the discussions tab.
I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's perspective as we get the conversation going.

GOOD magazine recently had a report card redesign contest. I love the winning design; you may not redesign your district's report card this year, but food for thought: What are some ways you could more effectively and creatively share progress with parents and families?

Lab Lessons: Morgan Wilson ‘11
Morgan's description of this lab exercise makes me think of the core value TEAM and how important it is for all of us -- including students -- to work together. Read on and reach out to Morgan for more information or advice.
"My students loved a lab experiment that we conducted on the tiny living organisms (microbes) called yeast. The girls began the day learning about what a microbe is and beginning to understand that living organisms come in all shapes and sizes. The Lead Scientist of each group made her way to the supply counter to collect all of the materials necessary for the experiment. Assistant Scientists ensured that their group members fully understood the safety protocol for the lab and the groups got to work. The girls measured, counted, and observed their yeast samples with and without sugar. They were shocked to see little bubble sprouting up on the surfaces of the samples with water, yeast and sugar. Given their background knowledge, they immediately hypothesized that the bubbles that rose to the top were evidence of CO2 being released from the active microbes as they ate the sugar in the solution (some of the girls were totally grossed out by the idea of little animals ‘farting’ in their bread, hah).
"Overall the Yeast Lab was a total success and went off without a hitch, my only recommendation would be to do the lab at home before bringing it to your students in order to ensure you have purchased the correct variety of yeast!"
