My father said, Politics asks the question: Is it expedient? Vanity asks: Is it popular? But conscience asks: Is it right?

This was the first time a woman in Dallas had won public office of any kind - even women questioned whether or not I was qualified, whether or not I could take it.

I became the first sophomore in Big Ten history to lead the league in scoring and rebounding. I enjoyed my time there (U of Indiana), but our family was struggling financially. My mother and I had a chance to sign with the Indiana Pacers, I did. I took all my $15,000 signing bonus and put down on a down payment on my mother's house that she still lives in to this day.

As an actor, I'm allowed - encouraged! - to explore emotions that have been basically unacceptable in my life. I have a huge well of emotional stuff, and once I give myself permission as an actor, it all comes to the surface. But I'll be damned if I can give myself permission to bring it out as a man.

You gotta have your elbow straight, your left hand is your guide hand to help you take the ball up. That hand comes off and it's follow through. The last finger that touches the ball is the index finger so you use that like a sight on a gun and point it to where you want that ball to go; so my target was the front of the rim. I practiced in the mornings by myself for about 3 hours just shooting, ball handling and things like that I'd learned in basketball camp.

Simply put, we have to take charge and take responsibility and support what's in the marketplace. Because, quiet as it's kept, the powers that be are cognizant of what our spending dollar means. And it is kept a little quiet, and we have to become aware of what we mean in the marketplace and take advantage of it.

My twin sister was apart of the group, and we lost her. It was difficult because we were young babies coming in the industry, and you have elders looking at you saying, "You're too fat. Y'all eating too many cheeseburgers." It messes with your psyche as a young baby. If I could change one thing, I would want the industry just to allow you to be who you are, and accept me the way that I am, and allow me to grow into who I am. That girl wasn't even 5 feet.

That's my job as an actor - to go on and try to do the work so subtle and so fine and specific that the memories will linger for a long time.

When I had an opportunity to go to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, I jumped at the chance...and it wasn't until I got there and went to class on the first day that I discovered that I was the only black person in the class. I was the only woman in the class.

I mean it鈥檚 unbelievable. I was very fortunate to be able to come into the league my second year and play for a while there and have an opportunity to impact the communities and the teams that I played for, you can never get that back. To be able to say you were one of the pioneers of the WNBA and to see where it is and the talent that is in the league is unbelievable.

Sometimes you've got to let everything go - purge yourself. If you are unhappy with anything... whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you'll find that when you're free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.

Music at that time, Charlie Parker was everything and it was such a powerful force that I wanted to play it. So I picked up the bass and I started playing in Atlanta, Georgia at Morehouse College. They didn't have a music program, you had to go to Spellman for music.
