Such a pretty girl had never been seen.
“What are you doing in a tower?” asks Rin.
“I’m locked in here.”
“I know.” says Rin. He is quiet for a moment. She probably won’t tell him, if he asks again. He looks back up. “Do you want to come down with me?”
“Yes, I do.” She curtsies. “I am called Merriweather. What are you called?”
“I’m called, let’s get you out of here. Come on.” he says. “Do you trust me?”
“Oh! Do I!”, she says, smiling graciously. She walks forward and wraps her arms around his neck.
He tries to pick her up and pauses. “Wait.” he says.
She breaks away.
“I don’t want to carry you.” he says again, sheepishly.
She looks aghast.
“Why not?”
“Have you met my brother?”
There is a silence.
“Okay. Maybe later.” she says, collecting herself.
He steps with one leg out of the window.
“Will you come back?”
“I don’t know.”
“I need you.” she says.
He smiles. Rin, Rin, smiles.
“I know.”
He climbs out the window.
“Don’t get lost, where you’re going.”
“I know.” he says.
He takes a look at the room. The walls are painted in lilac. It is very neat, and polished. This room is Ann’s.
“If I do come back then bring your mother. Ann seems to clean the place, when she is here.”
He disappears.

Chapter 17: The Big House
Yukio and his crazy freaking brother looked up at the palace before them.
“I could fit you in there 100 thousand times cubed.” said Yukio.
“What would you feed me?”
“I don’t know. Potatoes?”
“You know if you leave those things alone long enough, they grow legs?” asked Rin.
“I wouldn’t want to meet a potato person.” said Yukio.
“They would be dumber than I am.” answered Rin.
“You’re not dumb.” said Yukio. “You’re scary.”
“You think so?”
“Quiet. Look.” said Yukio. He pointed to the top of the palace.
There was a girl looking out the window, and she had long hair.
“It’s not my hair!” she shouted.
She let it down.
“I’ll pull you up!” she shouted.
“All right!” said Rin.
“We’re not pirates Rin. We knock on the door.”
“You can do that.” said Rin. “I’ll climb her hair.”
Rin looked back up.
“Who are you?”
“I’m a princess!”
“We know!”
“Okay,” said Yukio. “See you inside.”
Yukio went to the door to ring the old rope bell.
Rin had second thoughts.
“I’m quite amiable!” said the princess. She hesitated. “And I don’t always lie!”
Rin was at the bottom of the tower.
Yukio watched them, smiling, but he didn’t laugh. He didn’t laugh at his brother.
Then the door swung open to the palace, and the brothers went separate ways.

Chapter 16: The Ferryman
Yukio held up the beads.
“They’re fairy beads.” he said. Yukio knew this, just as he knew where they were from.
The beads were small, and few, but they were pretty little things.
The ferryman observed them and nodded.
The boys waded through the water and stepped onto the boat.
“Thankyou, Noonda.” said Yukio.
The doll put her hand to her heart and walked up to him to hold his hand.
“She’s friendly.” said Rin.
The doll did not reply.
Yukio looked into the water and saw his reflection.
He had a well developed jaw, and 2 moles under his blue eyes.
He reached out and touched the surface of the water.
Suddenly he felt like the water was sucking him in.
Yukio pulled his hand out, fast.
“What was that?” he asked.
Yukio waited but, the ferryman did not reply.
He didn’t press.
Rin poked his shoulder.
“Husband? Know any boat songs?”
“Are you asking me stupid questions to annoy me, or are you serious?”
Rin didn’t answer. Instead he sat down, rolled over, and fell into the water.
What the-?
He looked at the ferryman, and then looked at his clothing, a black dress.
“Could I borrow that?”
The ferryman nodded and took it off. Yukio put it on, and jumped into the water.
He was under for a long time, it seemed, but it was dark, not deep. Finally Yukio felt his brother and pulled him to the surface.
The boys were near the shore when they came up, and Yukio gasped for air as he laid down on the rocks.
Rin didn’t stir.
“Nii san!” shouted Yukio.
The ferryman was behind them.
The ferryman tossed a ring in his hand and Rin sat up, heaving.
“Thanks.” said Yukio.
Yukio took off his dress and handed it back to the ferryman.
Then he looked at his brother.
“Why did you do that?”
“I don’t know.”
Yukio stared at Rin for a while.
“You scare me sometimes you know.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know you are.”
Yukio smiled.

Chapter 15: Lady Luck
Rin was dreaming of Hercules, the demigod.
Hercules was drowning in a river.
Rin ran towards the river to save him, and slipped in the mud before he reached it.
Rin woke up with a gasp.
He was 5 years old.
He was entering kindergarten with his little brother Yukio.
On the first day, the boys held hands. They went everywhere together.
Rin and Yukio met some boys named Lars and Shou, and Rin learned that girls were boring.
All but one.
Her name was Lucy.
“She’s mine.” said Lars. “Don’t talk to her.”
Yukio tugged at Rin’s shirt. He was looking angrily at Lars.
Rin followed Yukio to the corner of the room.
“Don’t talk to Lars.” said Yukio. “He’s bad.”
“Why? What did he do?”
Yukio didn’t answer. He was looking at Lucy.
“You like her?” asked Rin.
Rin looked at the class “performer”, Lillie.
“What about Lillie?”
“No. Now listen to me. Don’t trust anyone, okay?”
“Okay.”
Yukio turned and ran towards Shou.
Once he had gotten there, Yukio looked back, and whispered something in the boy’s ear. They both laughed. Lucy walked up to the pair and looked curiously at them.
Then she looked at Rin.
“Why’s he so funny?” she asked.
Rin and Yukio didn’t hold hands again.

Chapter 13: Prince Perfect
The funny thing about swords is that they are not usually on fire, and it is strange for that fire to be blue.
Rin had that sword, and Yukio had his guns.
The boys were used to fighting.
“Thirty!” shouted Yukio.
“Quiet Tootles!” said Rin.
“Ha!” said Yukio.
Yukio was downing more zombies than Rin, and Rin was trying his best, but they were both getting tired.
It seemed like the onslaught of zombies was thinning.
Zombies travel in groups, and they weren’t everywhere all at once.
Yukio guessed he and Rin were half way to the devil’s castle too.
“Yukio, I think I’ve caught your luck!” shouted Rin.
“Maybe!” Yukio said, smiling.
He loved his brother.
The last zombie fell with a thunk, and the boys lowered their weapons.
“What you love me for?” asked Rin.
“Getting in the way!”, Yukio said, savagely.
Yukio felt a tug on his overcoat.
There was a little brown eyed doll with messy hair.
“Ah!” shouted Rin.
“Hush,” said Yukio. “Most dolls are good guys.”
Yukio knelt beside her.
She squeaked and pointed to the lake in front of them.
It was misty, and at first they could not see anything. Then there began to appear a boat.
A man was standing in it, paddling.
There was no line.
Yukio realized he had said this last aloud.
The doll tugged on his coat again and he looked down.
She was holding a bag of little, colorful beads.
To cross., she whispered.
Then she waddled over to the boat herself and gave the ferryman a dandelion.
He nodded and, the doll was instantly on the boat.
Dolls are fast when they mean to be.
Yukio and Rin followed her.

Chapter 12: Big Mouse
Rin and Yukio left with a map. It looked like the kind of thing that you would find in the beginning of a fantasy book. There were mountains and caverns drawn into it. There were also many depictions of flame.
“The fire is largest as you go toward Iblis’s land” says Yukio. “Though, we’ve got to go to that mountain, there.”
“To destroy the ring?”
“Maybe.” says Yukio.
“Come on I’m kidding with you.”
“Well there’s not many ways to answer that statement, is there?” says Yukio.
He looks up from the map.
Then he smiles.
“No, actually, I have an idea. Who do you think can reference LOTR the most while we are traveling?”
“I’ve read the books three times.” says Rin.
“Of course you have.” says Yukio.
Yukio was still trudging through the second, after being a bit too late to discover them.
“Where’s our escort?” asks Yukio. “Do you think Merlin’s in hell?”
“No. Who’s Merlin?” Rin pauses. “in this context?”
“The only one I know is from old English tales.”
“Do you think Merlin is real?”
“I do, axually.”
“Do you think he is in hell?”
“Maybe.”
Yukio looks back at the map, then reaches in his pocket for a coin.
“Always go for heads.” he says, “unless the other person has more presence than you.”
“I always have more presence than you.” says Rin.
“And i always know what you are going to say, which is why-“
Yukio pauses.
“This is a Blits and Chips coin.”
He holds it up for Rin to see.
“Either way you chose, you’re a rat with no booze.”
“Oh. Poetry. How quaint.”
“Heads we go the long way.” says Yukio.
He flips the coin and it lands on tails.
“What does that mean?” asks Rin.
“Remember how I told you to put away your sword?”
“Yes?”
“You can take it out now.”
Rin takes out his katana and begins to glow with blue flames.
That was when they began their journey.

Chapter 11: The Round Table (knights of)
The next morning Rin opens the curtains and lets in a little light, but for the most part, they wake up to the same darkness that had enveloped them at bed.
“Ask Astaroth about Jane.” says Yukio.
“Like, ‘What was she doing here?’, Like that?”
“Yes.”
“What if he doesn’t know?”
“I don’t know. But I would like to know.”
“Oh.”
“Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“I suppose, but I didn’t wake up thinking about that. I woke up thinking about Shiemi.”
“Were you dreaming about Shiemi?”
“Yes. She was brushing my long beautiful hair.”
Rin shook his head in an imitation of some model.
“You’re funny.”
“Baby I know.”
The door opened to a man with a hunched back.
“We need you to meet the king at his breakfast table.” says Eggbert.
“We were coming.” says Yukio.
“Okay.” says Rin.
~At the Table~
The table is circular, and on either side of Astaroth the demon king, Rin and Yukio take their seats.
“Your house is bursting with company.” says Yukio.
Yukio sits stage left, while Rin is at stage right. Besides them, the table is empty.
“Yes. I could say that with three, we have one, two many.” says Astaroth.
“Yes.” says Yukio.
“You speak like a dragon speaks!” shouts Rin.
“I eat dragons for breakfast. . . young master.”
“Why did you call me that?” asks Rin.
“You are his majesty’s only children.”
“Have you met our mother?” asks Yukio.
“No. I believe she resides somewhere else. But I have heard of her.”
The boys sit in silence and stare at the half cooked meat in front of them.
“What I meant to say, was that we met Madam Time last night in your corridor.” says Yukio.
“Ah. That old bat. I can’t get rid of her. Did she tell your future?”
“Yes.”
“Oh. It’s poppycock. All of it.”
He looks at Yukio.
“Do you believe her?”
“Yes.”
“I do too.” says Rin. He shouts, actually.
“We’re sorry Astaroth sir, Rin is used to getting all the attention.”
“Letting your brother speak for too long was it?” asks Astaroth.
“I think so.” Rin answers.
“Well at least your cat loves you.”
There is a silence.
“Do you know how we can make it to the surface and how we can gain political assylum?” asks Rin.
“You could wait. Time goes by faster down here.” says Astaroth.
The brothers look at each other.
“But Shiemi!” says Rin.
“I’m sorry Sir. We cannot do that.”
“Wait a little longer and you will see that Prima-donna everyone is talking about.”
“Who?” asks Yukio.
“Jesus, you brainiac.” says Rin.
“Jesus what? Oh.”
“Yes.” says Astaroth.
“Where will he be showing up?”
“Well everyone begins at the gates.” says Astaroth, “Unless you come by some other method of transportation, say, a Gehenna Gate.”
“If this is Hell, where is the fire?” asks Yukio.
“You must go deeper for that.” says Astaroth.
He starts speaking quietly.
“And only the gods can rescue you from there.”
“Have you ever been there?” asks Rin.
“Once.” says Astaroth, “For an interrogation.”
“Who did you interrogate?” asks Yukio.
“Some girl who tried pulling her brother out into the ocean to drown him. She was young, but there was family, you see. Of course she failed at her attempt, and died in the process. She is still considered their glory child, up there, on earth.”
“Is it our world which survives above here?” asks Yukio.
“It isn’t.” says Astaroth.
He says nothing more.
Then he says, “Are you two planning on leaving anytime soon?”
“We wanted to find a way back, but we haven’t yet.” says Yukio.
“We need to speak with Satan.” says Rin.
Astaroth grows in size and the room starts to decay around them.
“He is not called that!”
For a few seconds, they say nothing, and Astaroth gets smaller again.
The boys stare at him, mouths agape.
“His name is Lucifer, or the Devil. Satan is an entirely separate entity.”
“We apologize.” says Yukio a bit quickly.
“We would like to go home now.” says Rin.
“My servant will lead you out.” says Astaroth.
They say nothing more.

Blue Exorcist Chapter 10:
Yukio woke up once. Then twice. He was asleep inside his dream, but the second time he got up for real.
Of the two of them, Yukio’s dreams were the wildest.
He had dreamt that he was drifting in the sea, and there were fish which kept kissing his toes. There was no danger, but Yukio was panicking and trying to keep his feet close to the surface. Yukio was terrified of going too far out in the ocean, where he couldn’t touch the ground. What could there be below him, besides the dark, murky water?
There were no bogarts in the castle, and no sharks, neither. He laughed.
Rin wouldn’t get it. He didn’t tell him.
“Ni-san”
“What?”
“Are you asleep?”
“I was.”
“Do you want to go exploring?”
“Can I bring my katana?”
There was a pause.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“We won’t need it.”
“Fine.”
Rin pulled the sword off his back and laid it on the ground. Then the two left the room.
Once they were in the halls they noticed there were plenty of ways to get lost, and there were even replica pictures about the halls.
“How do you know this one is different from the one we saw before?” asks Rin.
“I can visualize this castle spatially. I know we haven’t turned enough times to see her again.”
He paused.
“And I suppose a brick cavern’s got nothing else to do but lead visitors astray.”
“I want a house like this when I become Paladin.”
“Hm. Sure. But with more windows.”
“And no basement.”
“Yeah.”
“Lost are you?” asked a voice.
“No. Not really.”
Rin and Yukio turned around.
There, stood a woman with gray hair and uneven teeth. She was smiling slightly, and she was wearing a cloak.
She touched a picture on her left and Yukio and Rin watched it turn yellow, and then fall apart.
“She’s time!” shouted Yukio. “Don’t touch her!”
The boys backed away.
“I haven’t come to harm you at all.” said the frail woman. “But ah! Aha! I can see your future.”
“What are you doing in the castle?”
“What’s the price for you to tell us our future?” asks Yukio.
“You have to help me remember my name.” says the witch. “And oh, that old beast can’t keep me away.”
“I thought you remembered when you died what your name was.” says Rin.
“Well. You see, I am very old. These things have escaped me more than once.”
“I know. You are Jane Hill.” says Yukio.
“How did you know that?” asks Rin.
“Shutup dingus.” says Yukio.
He looks at the woman.
“Tell us our future.”
“One of you won’t be returning to your world.” says the old woman. “One of you will get stuck down here, just, like, me.”
The boys were silent.
“Nice to know.” says Rin.
“Is it a fixed event?” asks Yukio.
“There are no such things.” says the old woman. She was backing into the shadows.
“Oh!” says Yukio. “And if you have Alzheimer's all you have to do is listen to that terrible screeching sound, and the guck in your brain will melt away.”
Jane Hill did not reply.
The boys stood alone, in the darkness.
“Are you sure her name wasn’t Tree Trunks, from Adventure Time?”
“I’m sure.”
“I love Tree Trunks.”
“Then you’re special.”
“Thanks aniki.”
“Yep.”

Blue Exorcist Chapter 9:
“What do you think Sherlock Holmes is the god of?” asks Rin.
“I don’t know.”
“Hmm.”
Rin and Yukio are still riding Eight Bells.
The horse seemed to have stopped speaking English, so there were no more questions from him.
“But would you call Mephisto or Kronos the king of time?” asks Rin.
“Well,” says Yukio.
The horse jumped over a small dip in the ground.
“Holy cow.” says Yukio.
“Holy moly.” says Rin
Rin looks behind him.
“Holy Moly! They’re chasing us!”
Shere Khan wasn’t there, but the red eyed beast was.
“That’s a boggart, right Yukio?”
“Yes”
“Is there any way we can get him to turn into a mouse?”
“Like Puss in Boots?”
“What?”
“It’s an english folk tale.”
“Is there?”
“Um. No.”
The horse jumped again, over a small stream.
The beast stopped following them.
“I almost forgot!” said Yukio, smiling. “Werecats hate water!”
They started to see the castle in front of them.
They came to the gates and jumped down.
The horse waited patiently as they did so, and once they had both gotten off, it nodded and turned away.
“That horse was in the Kentucky Derby, you know.” says Yukio.
“The what?” asks Rin.
“Nevermind. You know. Your constant naivety drives me nuts. It’s like you don’t love Love.”
“Who?”
“Nevermind.”
Yukio hissed.
He did that, when he was mad.
There is a moment of silence.
“I prefer the queen anyway.” says Rin.
“You’re breaking the wall?”
“I’m breaking the wall.”
A man, a man with spines down his back, rushes to the gates and opens them.
“What is your name, rank, and quest?”
Rin, obliviously, answers.
“Rin, Esquire, sanctity.”
Yukio was trying not to laugh.
“Yukio. You know who I am. Open the doors.”
“Yessir.” said the man.
“What is your name?” asks Rin.
“Eggbert, but it doesn’t quite matter to you, does it?”
“No.” says Rin.
He din’t know who was speaking for him now.
“I suppose not.”
“Come on lovely. You’ll be late.” says Yukio.
The two walk evenly to the front doors and open them on their own.
“Astaroth!” shouts Yukio. “You have visitors!”
“Is it that wolf and his whelp, was it?”
The voice came from all around them.
“I’m a registered citizen.” says Rin.
“I am too.” says the voice.
Then they see him, the king of Rot, like a ghost revealing itself to it’s family.
“What brings two morsels to my home?”
He had a long snout and was covered with wispy hair.
“We are the sons of Satan. We are being hunted in Assiah.”
“I thought there was only one son of Satan.”
The King looks at Rin.
“Two.” says Yukio, shakily.
“He’s a demon.” says Rin. “Take off your gloves.”
Yukio does as he is told, and reveals a glimmering surface on his paws.
“You shine in the sun, don’t you?” asked the king.
“I do.” says Yukio.
“It’s a bit alarming,” says Rin. “But you should have seen him with Chicken Pocks.”
“Ha.” says the king. “You amuse me. Do you have a soul name?”
“I don’t know.” says Rin.
“How do you find out?” asks Yukio.
“Well when you die, you remember.” says the king.
“Is something above here?” asks Yukio.
“Yes,” says the king, “and there are some on the surface who insist you don’t have a soul name. But enough about that. You are my guests…”
He stealthily looks at Rin, and then back at Yukio.
“You will need a room.”

Chapter 8: The Red World
Gehenna is red.
“I hate red.” says Rin.
There was red grass, and a clay- red ceiling.
They were underground.
“Is this Hell?” asks Yukio. “I think I get it.”
“It’s beautiful.” says Rin.
“You just said you hated red short stuff.”
“I do.” says Rin. “Don’t ask stupid questions.”
He smiled at Yukio.
“Where to?, oh travel master.”
Yukio looked down.
“Eh. Well if we look at this compass,” Yukio fished in his pocket and took out a gold watch. “North is that way.”
He pointed behind them.
“Okay.” said Rin.
“Are there such things as towns down here?”
“No.” said Yukio. “Just beast territory.”
“Where are the beasts?”
“He must have left us in a safe spot- Mephisto.”
Yukio put the watch back in his pocket.
“Maybe if I reveal my flames the beasts will take us to the castle.” says Rin.
“Or they will kill us.” says Yukio. “But it’s an idea.”
“Okay. Let’s try it.” said Rin.
He took out his sword from it’s sheath, and was immediately covered in blue flames. This was not unusual.
They waited.
Then they heard something- like a bird’s call.
“They’re here! They’re here!”
The sound faded as the bird got further away.
Then, nothing.
They waited.
“Shere Khan.”
They heard a small voice.
“I know poppet.” A great tiger snuck out from the grass. “The young prince is here.”
“Can we eat them?”
“No you cannot.” said a new voice, a falcon. It quickly flew past and drew into hiding in the grass.
“Who said that?” asked the smaller voice. “Shere Khan.”
“Shut up!” shouted the tiger.
“Hello. Can you lead us to the devil’s home?” asked Yukio.
“I don’t think you’ll need our help. They’re all coming for you now.”
“Now.” said the small voice.
“Are they coming to kill us?” asks Rin. He sounds afraid.
“I don’t think so.” says Shere Khan.
“Aren’t you from Jungle Book?” asks Yukio.
“Aren’t you from Japan?” asks Shere Khan.
They see a mouse scurry out from under the tiger’s feet.
The falcon swoops closer.
“We all have our reasons for being here.” says the tiger. “Now.” he says. “Run.”
Yukio takes out his gun.
“I don’t think so big guy.”
Rin takes out his sword.
Then other things start to appear.
They see a horse come out of the grass, and some more mice.
“Didn’t you hear the falcon?” asks the horse. “None of us are to kill him.”
“I haven’t tasted man since the 70s. 1870s mind you.”
“I haven’t either.” says the horse. “But there are things more important.”
He looks at the boys.
Something cackles in the grass.
“On my back! Hurry!” says the horse.
“Hell no.” says Yukio. “We’ll find the place ourselves.”
“Low demons.” says a new voice.
Rin turns around.
“Shiemi!” he says, smiling.
He runs over to her
“No Rin!” says Yukio. Rin stops and looks behind him.
Yukio speaks again.
“That’s a boggart.”
Rin looks back.
Suddenly the boys are looking at a great monster with teeth and huge red eyes.
The monster roars.
“Get on the horse.” says Yukio.
The boys run over and get on.
The horse starts slowly, and then begins to gallop.
“Thankyou, sir.” says Yukio. “What is your name?”
“I’ve forgotten that.” says the horse, huffing. “But you can call me Eight Bells.”
“Don’t make me cry.” says Yukio.
The horse gallops on.

Blue Exorcist: Chapter 7
Yukio opened the door to the principal’s office.
“They’re searching the sewers. There is nowhere for us to go.”
Rin comes through after him.
“Welllll,” says the principal.
He drew out the well so it was like he was murmuring.
“I do have a solution.”
“You do?” asks Rin.
“Only if you two are willing.”
He clicks a button under his desk and the ceiling draws away on either side.
“I’m something like an ambassador you see.”
“A Gehenna Gate!”
“Well yes.”
Mephisto stands.
“I have this set to the king of Rot’s territory, Astaroth. You should find good company with him.”
“He won’t kill us?” asked Yukio.
“No. Astaroth is faithful to Satan, and such creations. The demon kings are not the devils children, you remember, but his brothers and sisters.”
“Okay.” said Rin. “Let’s go.”
He goes to get the ladder.
“Is there anything else you can tell us?” asks Yukio.
They heard voices down the hall.
“Hurry.” says Mephisto.
The boys left, and just as a man entered the principal’s door, the ceiling closed behind them.

Blue Exorcist 6: A Small Garden
“Why do you always hang out with that Rin character You know he doesn’t really like you.”
Shiemi was laying in the grass, in the garden.
“I don’t know.” she said.
She looked at the flower who was speaking to her.
“But you like me, don’t you?”
“Yes we do. We would do anything for you Shiemi.”
“I know.” she said.
She looked back at the sky.
“Why do you think he doesn’t like me?”
“He’s jealous madame.”
“No. That’s not it.”
She got up and brushed the gremlins off her kimono.
She always wore a kimono.
“Yuki likes me.” she said. “But I don’t know if he likes me in ‘that way’ or not. He’s still trying to seduce Rin.”
She looked at the plants.
“We’ll find out when we die, won’t we?”
“Yes mam.”
She got up to go inside.
“Mom!”
“What is it Shiemi?”
“Do you need help with anything?”
“No thank you dear.”
Shiemi’s mother Ursula Moriyama came into the yard.
They heard a knock on the door.
Ursula went to open it.
“Hello? We’re looking for Okumura Rin. Is he within this establishment?”
“I don’t think so.” said Ursula.
The men move past her.
“I hope you don’t mind if we take a look around.”
“Not at all.” said Ursula.
The men started looking for trap doors in the shelves and floor.
“Why are you looking for Rin?” asked Shiemi.
“Orders from the order.” said the man.
“Oh.”
“He’s not here!” shouted a worker.
“Thankyou mam, but we have new information. He’s somewhere else.”
They file out the door.

Blue Exorcist 5: Ghouls everywhere
Something dangerous was underfoot.
Yukio got that feeling when he woke up in bed in the morning.
What was it?
He couldn’t remember.
Rin was downstairs, cooking.
He was good at that.
Yukio got dressed and stepped out into the hall.
He and Rin lived in a dorm, but the place was empty except for them.
It was all to guard Rin’s secret.
Rin was, and now Yukio too, a demon.
They had demon blood.
“Rin!”
“Yes?!”
He ran down the stairs and ran into Rin.
“Have you been having prophetic dreams lately?”
“No. Have you?”
“I think so, but I can’t remember.”
“Is it a good thing?”
“I don’t think so. Where’s my cellphone?”
“I’m using it… I lost mine.”
“Let me see. Mephisto.”
Mephisto Pheles was the principal of the school, and mayor of this town. He was also a demon. Yukio didn’t know much about it.
“Hello. Yes. Let me speak with the principal. Footloose.”
“Foot what?” asked Rin.
“Oh hello Sir.” said Yukio. He ignored Rin. “Are you available to speak?… Yes?… Well I have some things to report… Okay. I’ll see you then.”
“Thanks.” said Yukio. He hurried out of the dorm.
Soon afterward -
Yukio knocked on the principal’s door.
“Come in.”
“Sir.” he said.
The door banged open.
“I’ve had dreams, about Rin. They’re coming after him, aren’t they? The council.”
“Yes they are.”
“What should we do?”
“You mean, what shouldn’t we do? We are humble followers of these men and women. All we can do is sit and wait.”
“Nothing else?”
“No. Nothing else.” He paused. “If I had thought of something I would have called you.”
“Can’t you tell them-“
“Tell them that we need Rin, that we never know when a demon king, or the devil himself will attack again?”
“Yes-“
“I’ve told them. They are adamant. How did you know they were coming for Rin?”
“Nevermind that. When?”
“Tomorrow. However, I wouldn’t run underground, or use my teleportation keys to get out of here. It’s unavoidable.”
Yukio smiled.
“No sir. I wouldn’t either.”
Yukio and Rin waited for night.
Then they left.
They didn’t tell anyone.
“Yukio. You crazy four eyes.”
“What is it?”
“Where the hell are we going?”
“Far away.” he answered.
It wasn’t really an answer.
“Can’t we tell Shiemi?”
“She might rat us out.”
“Bullshit.”
“You’re full of curses now. Aren’t you.?”
“Well- I thought about it.”
They stopped.
A Dog Ghoul appeared in the light before them.
(These were animated corpses.)
Yukio shot it.
His gun was already muffled.
“Damn. They’re everywhere!”
“You know, we could hide in Shiemi’s house while they look for us.”
“No. Keep walking.”
“Do you have any sort of plan?”
“No… Well yes. I want to look for our father.”
“Did you just call him that?”
“Yes Rin. Look I’ve been having these dreams. I think he’s on our side-“
Rin smacked Yukio in the face.
“Don’t ever call that sicko-“
Yukio stepped forward to push Rin, and their legs got tangled.
Yukio fell on top of him.
“Get off me you- bastard!”
“He’s all we have left.” said Yukio.
Rin was quiet.
“What? We have tons of people who still care about us. What are you saying?”
“He’s the one who warned me- that they were coming for you.”
Rin began to get up, and so did Yukio.
“Our mother loved him-“
“I’m going back.” said Rin.
“You’re what?!”
“I’m leaving. You can have fun in Guatemala for all I care.”
“I’m not going to Guatemala you prick.”
Rin turned around.
“I’m going to Gehenna.” said Yukio.
“What?”
“Don’t ask, pathetic, questions, you fucking whelp.”
Yukio slipped and the light went out.
The flashlight rolled away from him in the darkness.

Blue Exorcist Chapter 4 The Most Recent Supper
The devil sits at a long table, waiting to be waited on by his assistants. He’s hungry.
Normally a demon would go foraging to eat, but the devil doesn’t roam like his demon brothers. If he wanted to be somewhere he could get there in a second if he wanted to. Traveling is a hassle.
“George.” he says softly.
He never yells.
“Yes, Sur?”
“Where’s that pastry?”
“We’re still cooking it Sur.”
“Where is my guest? She’s late.”
“Poppy says she will be here when you get on some proper clothing.”
“She doesn’t like my pajamas?”
“No. Sir. They’re lurid.”
“Did you say that?”
“No. Sur.”
“Good.”
He gets up.
“Where is my tuxedo?”
They hand it to him and he puts it on like a normal person would.
He sits back down.
“I’ve told her you’ve changed Sur. Here she is.”
Poppy walks into the room.
“Hello Satan.”
“How’s the business Poppy?”
“Getting better.”
She pushes aside her meal.
“When will you be coming back to the surface Devil? We miss you.”
“Soon. Poppy.”
“Are you going to use Rin?”
“Yes. Poppy.”
“Good. I like him.”
She pauses.
“He’s very brave isn’t he?”
“He is.” says the Devil.
“I’m still trying to rescue Selena Gomez.” says Poppy. “It’s hard when I can’t reach her. I can’t reach most of the stars.”
“I’ll take care of Gomez. Don’t you worry.”
“Everyone else is worrying.” says Poppy. “Could I eat a fish sandwich?”
“You may.”
Satan snaps, and his servants appear.
“Get this girl some tuna.”
“Yes Sur.”
They leave.
“Do you think Rin will comply with your wishes?” asks Poppy.
“Yuri would. I hope he would too, but there is something dangerous afoot. I have only been able to warn Yukio in dreams. His occlumency is sharp. I can’t tell if he is getting it.”
“Could I meet them?”
“Once I raise hell, you can.”
The servants return with the tuna.

Blue Exorcist 3: Rain
Rin knocks on the door and Shiemi opens it.
She looks Rin in the eyes.
She’s always had that talent. She can really look at you.
“What is it darling?” she asks.
“How are you?”
“Fine.”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t ask stupid questions. I said it once didn’t I?”
“She’s fine.” says Yukio.
He walks into the picture.
“Yuki! You too? Why are you guys here?”
“Rin wanted to see you.”
Rin shoots daggers at his brother and looks back at Shiemi.
“I was worried that there might be some demons after you, since you’re involved with me, is all.”
Yukio smiles at Rin.
“For someone who lacks imagination, you sure are good at coming up with excuses Rin.”
“Shut your pie hole genius.”
“Stop fighting!” shouts Shiemi. It’s a bit loud. “He says one thing and then you say another and next thing you know there’s cursing.”
“Excuse me.” says Rin.
“Yes. Thankyou.” says Shiemi.
She positions her hands like she’s pushing away her anger.
“Are there any demons after you?” asks Yukio. “Rin makes a good point.”
“Well I always think the mirror looks at me longer than I look at it,” says Shiemi. “But besides that, there’s nothing.”
“Okay then. We’ll leave.” says Yukio.
“Wait.” says Rin. “How is your mother? Still having MS attacks?”
“They’ve lessoned since she stopped smoking, but thank you for asking.”
She smiles at them and then looks behind her.
Then she looks back.
“Okay. Goodbye you guys!”
She hurries back into the house.
“She’s like a storm in the sunshine, isn’t she?” asks Rin.
“Yes. She is.” says Yukio.
They leave the store.
“Hi Rin.” says a passerby.
“Hi… stranger.”
He looks at Yukio.
“Do you see what I mean?”
“Yes. A bit.”
“A bit? The Hockey Sticks does that mean?”
“Listen Rin. People know about you. It’s not that strange.”
“Was I in the paper?”
Yukio stops and so does Rin.
“No. But know this, there are people in Guatemala with a picture of you on their bedside table.”
“Oh. That’s a bit much. What did I do?”
“You exist, you asshole.”
Rin looks behind him. Shiemi is not there.
“Stop cursing!” he hisses. He looks back at Yukio, who is smiling.
Then Yukio kisses him on the lips.
He breaks away.
“I love how you always know what to say. People can make fun of you for it, but it’s a talent.”
“I know. I’ve been saying that.”
He pauses.
“Wait. You just kissed me!”
“Yep.”
“I don’t understand you workaholics.” says Rin. “Why don’t you kiss girls? When do you see the light of day? God doesn’t know.”
He looks at Yukio and then looks down.
He doesn’t have that ‘looking’ talent.
“Let’s go back home.”
“Okay.” says Yukio.

Blue Exorcist Chapter 2
“Yukio, where are you going?”
Rin watched as his brother opened the door.
“I’m going demon hunting. Want to join me?”
“Yes.”
Rin gets up hastily, and knocks over a glass of water on the table.
“Let’s go!” Says Rin.
“Clean that.” says Yukio.
“Okay.”
Rin goes to get a bath towel from under the bed.
“How many demons could there be out there?” He asks.
Rin gets on his knees and cleans the floor.
“Still more. Some went into hiding when they found out we were doing a cleansing.”
“Cleansing? What if we find some nice ones?”
“Then we’ll keep them. Get your cellphone. We’re using the things to track them.”
“Okay.” says Rin. “It’s like we’re playing Pokémon Go.”
“Exactly,” says Yukio.
Rin and Yukio walk” down the street. There is music spilling out of the megaphones on the lampposts, at each corner.
There was something about music, lately, Rin thought. It sounded even better than usual. The singers were telling him things, and the things they said were smart, clever, helpful. Right now, he was listening to music more frequently than his brother read books, which was saying something.
“What are you thinking about?” Yukio asks.
“I can keep a secret.” Says Rin.
“No. You can’t.” Says Yukio.
Yukio stops him.
“There’s a boggart right here. Wait.”
There was a grate, in the ground, and something was gurgling out of it.
Suddenly they were looking at a small boy.
“Don’t get me. I’m not doing anything.”
Yukio lowered his gun.
“Would you like to come with us?”
Suddenly there was father Fugimoto, their late guardian.
“If I said yes would you show me your tits?”
Yukio shot, five times.
“Wretched husk of a thing.”
Rin was silent.
“Could we go see Shiemi after this?” He asks.
Yukio looks at him.
“Sure Rin. Let’s move on.”
