I’d like to think that Sophie would tell Howl that she was with child by using her flowers. Like instead of telling him simply and directly, she planted daffodils and baby’s breath around the house until he noticed and asked her about it. It took him 2 days to notice, and a week before he asked. Needless to say, he had no clue ‘till Sophie told him about it :)

the witch of the waste is so funny. and howl too. howl, manic wizard dream boy, dating the unnamed Witch of the Waste. because he is unstable and has no heart he is infatuated immediately. because she is insane she is also infatuated immediately but is more crazy about it and quickly becomes very possessive. ("that'll teach you to meddle with things that belong to me" girl that is a human person)

howl quickly realizes "a) I'm bored now that I have nothing more to achieve from pursuing her b) this woman is incredibly controlling and jacked up in the brain c) that girl I saw at Fairfax's last week was really pretty." he cuts things off, not rudely, but with less grace than he maybe could have used. because she is insane WotW freaks out on him.

later she finds out that he's interested in this hatter girl who's got a natural unhoned magic talent. WotW freaks out extra hard, tries to curse him, tracks down the girl named hatter whose magical hats have been the talk of the valley, and puts her elaborate scheme in motion. all because howl broke up with her. lmao. also she doesn't even get the right girl but the one she does put a spell on is the one that ends up marrying him. suck on that

I love Howl's Moving Castle from studio ghibli as much as the next person but I'll NEVER forgive them for whitewashing michael. Michael is BLACK in the book. You hear me right. A black wizard's apprentice in a fantasy novel from the 80's. King we will not forget you.

I keep trying to get my mother to read HMC (Im the only one who enjoys reading in my entire family T_T) because she and my dad keep doing things that I think Sophie and Howl would do, plus their general interactions with each other. I've shown her screen shots of bits of the book and she keeps laughing and saying that's her. Unfortunately she really does /not/ enjoy reading and so I've never managed to get her to read it. Yet.

When do you think Howl realized/admitted to himself that he’s in love with Sophie? I feel like its earlier than Sophie’s realization on weedkiller day… and when does Calcifer realize?

idk if he admitted it himself too early, he doesn't seem the type to admit things too easily (still, I think he's better about it than our dear Sophie lmao). Realized though - I think he might've realized it much earlier and then have some ~*~denial time~*~ for the rest of the book.

Calcifer is too an interesting thought, he does hold howl's heart quite literally and if we go by the metaphor you could say he also holds his "feelings" (he doesn't get paid enough for this shit does he). He probably knows earlier than Howl. But he's a fire demon™ so he might think about human experiences in general and all of this differently and be like. "The curse must really be affecting him bc this bitch has been having a heart attack for like two weeks now." But then again you could also say this contract with howl has made him more human as well so he might be understanding everything better than anyone else.

As the book is from sophies (biased) pov there are many interpretations about this & it's always fun to have different theories too I think

@hmcbook been reading the replies with people theorizing when Howl realised he was in love with Sophie and it’s just making me appreciate how romantic Howl actually is when he’s just being himself vs when he’s putting on a show for someone. 

Spending hours trying to to look perfect every single time he goes out to see a person? Fine for a first impression, but not great for anything longer-lasting. vs I Am Terrified That This Person Is Going To Be Hurt So I Must Leave Immediately So I Can Save Them And I Don’t Care That I Look Like Absolute Disheveled Garbage? Incredible. (also a very obvious nod to the fact that he had the same reaction when Calcifer told him the Witch of The Waste found his family, so Sophie is clearly very important to him, just -chef’s kiss-). 

Trying very hard to do things that look or sound impressive to impress a girl? (the friggin guitar)? vs I’m Going To Use Magic On This Person To Try To Make Them Hurt Less And Improve Their Life And I’m Not Even Going To Mention It Until Ages Later Because Getting Recognition For This Isn’t Important? 

Flirting and showing off? vs I Am Going To Give This Person A Whole Business To Reign Over And It’s Purpose Will Be Entirely Up To Them And I’ll Also Provide Everything Necessary To Run Said Business So She Doesn’t Have To Worry About That (giving the love of your life a bouquet is so tired. give the love of your life a HOUSE and a SHOP and a FIELD FULL OF FLOWERS, jfc howl ily) 

(also sending The Love of Your Life and your newborn child (or TLoYL still pregnant with your child, I can’t remember which way it went) away and disguising them so that they’ll be safe while knowing full well you could very well die or any number of other things without them ever knowing, but at least they’ll be okay)

(also also the whole damn Twinkle thing, like Sophie went off on Official Super Serious Business and Howl had to tag along to bug the hell out of her make sure she was okay and also because he would miss her)

technically he bought her old house so,,i guess that counts? but imagine his thought process when he learned that sophie went straight to the witch of the waste and all that he could probably think was “GOD. if anything happens to her I won’t forgive myself” and there’s probably a point on where he stopped in his tracks and realized that that was the first time he ever actually admitted that he loves her and has fallen for her after all that denial and when he gets there sophie just thinks that he’s there for ms angorian WHICH PROBABLY ABSOLUTELY BREAKS HIS HEART A LITTLE GOD SOPHIE and he thinks like “what? no! im here for you, sophie!” before sophie could realize that he wasn’t rlly in love w that english teacher
