Project Description
Background
Boone is a photographer, installation artist, and curator of film and visual and performing arts. His current work is about explores how cultural and natural changes places that have been destroyed. For example, he take some photos of some graves, those graves are covered by green plants. In addition, he has some photos of big holes caused by bomb craters. Now these holes are covered by green plants and water. Boone wants to show us that “how the power of nature and the resilience and ingenuity of villagers transform these markers of death into sustaining spaces of life.”. He is a immigrant. He was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam and lived in Saigon until 7 years old, and then he moved to Philadelphia.

Story Idea
When the first time Boone Nguyen came to our class and talk about his work, I realize that he will be my project, because he is a immigrant. I have an idea of immigrant that how do Chinese live in America? it is similar to Boone’s experience. I realized that may be Boone can give me some ideas about immigrants. In fact, I do learn some thing during doing this film. Boone talks a lot of his family and the journey of immigrant in the footage. We have almost 10 hours footage, but we only use seven and half mins in the film.
Film structure and Goal:
The film will be narrative documentary. We will explore the relationship between the idea of Boone’s work and his home, families and how he did transformation in his work, like he transform death to live in his works.
Project
The documentary film Boone Nguyen A Story of Home represents Boone’s life in Philadelphia and Vietnam. The beginning of the film, we shows some of his families’ photos. Then, cut to his photography of a his father’s grave. He talks more about this photo. Then, he start to talk about his life. He came to America when he was seven after the war, he came to America with four sisters and two brothers and his parents. His father works for the American government. 2012 he went back to Vietnam because his father was ill and passing and he buried his father. When he went back the home village, he just realized that he never think about the history of the family. When he buried his father he feels that makes a really strong connection between him and his home village. He feels like this is the last gift that his father gives him. He has been working with the seniors, he ask them to draw what their home village looks like. Then he talks about his mom. His mom is 86 years old, she is amazing woman.  Film end up with his aunt’s photo. In this film, we use some B-rolls with the interview. First B-roll is his family photo, then is his photo of his father’s grave. Third one is his old photo shows he buried someone.  Fourth one is when he help the seniors. Fifth is the road of Philadelphia. Final one is car driving on the Vietnamese road.

Justin used skype to connect to Boone, because Boone went back to Vietnam and we have to ask something to finish our film, so the only way is to skype chat with Boone. In the skype chat, Boone says that he is going to attend a wedding.  Boone and Justin talk about  Boone’s mom, brothers, works and ask some footage from Boone’s works (wedding).

This is the second interview we have made in Boone’s current rent house in Philadelphia. We have spent around 5 hours in this interview. We set up two camera (one is in front of him with medium shot, other one is on the side of him with close up shot). We plan to set the medium shot camera as a settled and the close up shot camera as a active which means we will not move the medium shot camera, we may move the close up shot camera to his hand or somewhere else. Heather, Justin and Hsien do the interview in house, I pick some of Boone’s photos to shot outside. I did some B-rolls of the street, house and Boone’s families’ photos. Finally, we use Boone’s families’ photos as the intro in our film.

Questions:
1.What are my personal interests in the topic I have chosen?
My personal interests in Boone's topic is that when I watched Boone's photos and shot film about funeral, I can see the different culture between China and  Vietnam. He is a immigrant from Vietnam. My project is also about immigrant, so I want to know more background of him that could help me to build my project better.
2.Why have I selected this issue?
The immigrant is always a big issue in the world. I want to focus on Chinese immigrant and Chinese students live in American. I want to focus on their life. Because I always hear someone who never come to American say that the people work and study in American have better life than in China. I want to show them the real life about us in American.
3.How has this issue impacted my life?
Come to American is the most important thing in my life. When I was in China, I thought that come to American is not that difficult and also I can get rid of my parents that I can live free. But, I am wrong, the life in American is hard; bad language skill always make me afraid to talk. Sometimes feel loneliness; miss my family and so on.
4.What do I want to communicate about this issue to a viewer who may not know about this issue?
I want to show the viewer the real life of Chinese in American.
5.What do I want to communicate about this issue to a viewer who may be already familiar with this issue?
Even the viewer know about this, I think most of them only know a bit of us. I want to show them the truth.

We had a trip to The Color Girls Museum. I look around the whole house, there is one picture that catch my eyes.  That picture is on the top right of my post. The artist draw that picture with fire on the wood. I use to study drawing such as  sketch, so I know this picture is a good sketch. There are many other interesting things as well. I shoot a short video of the electric fan on the top of the roof, it is very beautiful.

I watched a show named Lossless. When I walked into the room and look around, I found some interesting film on the wall such as Mother’s Return, An Ecstatic Experience, Three Quarters and so on. There is only one film that most grabbed my attention named ITIFWORQ/DOUBLE GOLD. This film sits in the deepest part of the room. This film shot by Sosena Solomon. The main Character is Sosena Solomon’s grandmother. It sets as a family room. It has a sofa, table, four coffee cups, breads and knife. Two screens are in front of me, I sit on the sofa and watch this film for 6 times. This film talks about a 94 years old woman killed a soldier when she was 14 years old in the Ethiopian antifascist resistance, and then her husband abandons the family. She had to support the family by herself. Then her uncle asked her to get married again. I think the most part of film that catch my attention is the story, some close up shots and stop shots. This film uses expository mode that     For the story, I can remember that when the grandma talks how did she kill a soldier, she feels happy and none of fear, I feel she is telling us a funny story. I feel she is powerful in the war. she was just 14 years old, I can’t image that how did she kill a heavily armed soldier.     For the close up shot, I really like the close up shot on her hand. It represents that she is a fighter not only in the war but also in the life. Her hand is full of wrinkle; I think she had to do a lot of works to support her family by herself. She has many children.    For the stop shots, there are three stop shots in the end of the film. When the grandma finish talking the story. She is standing outside of the room, when she turns around her face to the camera, she realizes that the camera is filming her, then she smiles to the camera. I feel she is optimistic and powerful. Although she had hard life before, she is still smile to the life. I feel she is still beautiful.     In the conclusion, People always think that man has more power than woman, but this film intrigues me because it shows me that women have the same power as a man
