Forget your tasks.
Forget your pending assignments.
Forget your fashion projects and orders from the Queen.
That night, no needle nor thread came between the tines of your fingers.
Instead, on your bedside, drenched in a milk-white nightgown and blue fleeced cardigan, exuding the highest forms of hot girl behaviour you possibly could that cold winter night… you put your feather pen to work, a trail of words falling right behind it…
Huening Kai was toast. Not literally.
He spent a tiring eighteen hours of capturing their first dragon, only to realize it was the offspring of a much larger, much more sinister mommy dragon…
“You know, I didn’t expect the mother to look so…” Yeonjun tossed half a bag of hot cocoa over a jug of warm milk. “… actually, I shouldn’t say anything. If there’s a mother, there should be a father too, right? I may be a flirt but I do not condone to homewrecking because homewrecking is not hot, not cool, at all.” Yeonjun filled a rusty mug up with hot chocolate. “Here, help yourself.”
Huening Kai slumped over his air-mattress-sleeping-bag contraption.
It popped at the weight of his cheeks.
Huening Kai’s left eye twitched.
He grabbed the hot cocoa from Yeonjun’s hand. “Thank you.”
Yeonjun was fighting between feeling sorrowful for his commander or bursting into tears (not from sadness). “You can sleep on my bed tonight. I’ll buy you a hammock first thing in the morning.”
Huening Kai slurped a good chunk of that not-so-well-mixed hot cocoa. “Saving me from that ‘only one bed’ trope, I see.”
Yeonjun felt genuine concern for his commander.
Before saying anything, there was a thump at the front of their tent.
Every single knight within the vicinity audibly flung their swords out.
Yeonjun blinked twice.
He set his own hot cocoa down, zipping open the tent. “Hello?”
A blue robin pecked at the tent. In its feet, an envelope.
Yeonjun took the letter from the kind bird, wishing it a good night and a better tomorrow, winking at it, or at least trying his best to.
The blue robin flew away.
And all the other knights were back to sleeping in their little yellow tents. Maybe. Maybe not.
Yeonjun hummed upon staring at the envelope, pacing around the tent mindlessly. “Hmm… It’s from the castle.” He passed the sheet of paper to his Commander Knight. “Says its for the eyes of Kai Kamal Huening and Kai Kamal Huening only. I think it's important.”
“If it’s from the castle, it should be important.” Huening Kai ripped open the envelope and…
Stained paper, raunchy cursive scrawled upon every line like a boat on the surface of calm waters.
A letter.
A letter with your handwriting.
… Hello Hyuka,
It’s Y/n, and, I’m sure I’m not the first person that came to mind when you received this letter but hey, it’s me. I know last time things didn’t go too well, and we were clouded by emotion to really think straight about what we were saying anyway but that moment in your bungalow was real, and what we felt was real, guttural, even.
I honestly don’t know what I’m saying right now either, hehe. Point is, I wanted to write to you, because I want us to be okay again. I know we won’t be able to see each other for some time. For a long time. But I don’t want to keep things stiff and awkward for too long now, and… yeah. How’s… everything? I mean, I hope everything’s going well. I hope you’re doing okay. Tired, for sure. Drained, even.
But I know there’s nothing you can’t handle, after all, I’ve seen the way you fought so so many times. I’ve been feeling a little out of it too, honestly, but that’s okay! Because I know I will be okay, and you will too.
Is there anything I can help you with, though? Is it cold there? Do you need earmuffs or a sweater? I’ll sew a puffy hoodie if you’d like, or… is there anything on your mind that you want to talk about? I’m here for it, I’m here for you. I could send over my mom’s cookies, I know you’d love them. My dad’s currently restocking some flowers, business hasn’t been doing too well since it’s snowing. Is it too much? I can send them one at a time so it feels like you get a gift everyday :) As much as I want you to stay strong throughout the whole journey, I want you to stay happy, too, above all else.
And if you’re ever feeling low, just know that you have me, that you get to talk to me and I get to talk to you and, yeah, ink and paper isn’t the same but it’s what we’ve got and I really don’t want to lose touch with you, not completely. I apologize for writing such a cluttered letter :’))) I know it seems all over the place, because I am all over the place, but, yeah, stay safe out there, slay a dragon, get some rest, stay strong, you got this, um. Love you lots <3333333333
Kindest regards, your biggest fan and one and only true friend who coincidentally knows how to knit a Christmas stocking or two.
…
“…”
“… Kai? Commander? I don’t mean to rush you but it’s been half an hour and your eyes are looking kinda red.”
Huening Kai had to re-read that letter at least a good thirty-eight times.
“It must be serious, is it?” Yeonjun poked up from his air mattress, because, yes, he’s used up the time for skincare, changing into his pajamas, a good tune on his kalimba, a self-portrait session, a stretch routine, a vacation to the Bahamas— “Do we have more intell on the dragon? Did the King disband the mission? Kai Kamal Huening you’re actually killing me right now. Do we have to—”
“No… no. It’s not from… him.”
Yeonjun didn’t take any more time to connect the dots, puzzle the pieces, light the bulbs. “Oh my God oF COURSE IT’S GOTTA BE THAT SEAMSTRESS CHIC!”
Huening Kai physically jumped off his deflated air-mattress. “STOP SCREAMING!” Huening Kai screamed.
“I’M NOT SCREAMING.” Yeonjun jumped over to his side and tugged at his shoulders.
“WHY ARE WE—” A huff. A breath. A twelve second meditation session. “Okay. okayokayokayokayokay. Alright.”
“Commander be spitting bars.”
Huening Kai shrugged his shoulders, getting his fellow knight off of him, looking to where his pillow was at, lying down. “I’m hyperventilating, okay? Wait no actuallyI’mnothyperventilating I’m okay just… give me some time alone.” He turned to the side fetal position and draped a blanket over his body all in one go, eyes screwed to the sheet of paper.
At times like these, Yeonjun could not believe he’s a Commander Knight.
But it was cute.
He was cute.
Yeonjun smirked, going back to his own bed, thankful Huening Kai had forgotten about their previous trade offer. “Alright sweet cheeks, good night.” He did not mean that literally.
And at some point, in the middle of the night, like, ten minutes after they’ve talked, Yeonjun looked up at the window of their tent, closed, but not blackout shut. “You know, it’s nice knowing our Commander Knight has a safe person he can smile and giggle about.”
Huening Kai blinked away, disrupted after his forty-fifth re-read. “Is that a bad thing?”
Yeonjun did not answer, not directly. “There are so many people out there who care about you, Kai. I don’t wanna list them all down right now but even if you don’t think a whole lot of people care about you, you got your seamstress buddy on your side and that’s… absolutely a good thing.”

That night, a woman was seen running around the entire castle.
Every nook and cranny, you peeped through.
Every forbidden area that was clearly off-limits, you looked into.
Any palace guard or maid that witnessed the scene would eye you in concern, ask what’s the matter, and tell you ‘good luck, babe, we’re rooting for you!’ which wasn’t very practical but nonetheless provided you even the tiniest bit of encouragement.
You’ve passed the Queen at some point, in the throne room admiring the crammed outfit collection her talented seamstress had made for her.
“Look, sweetheart, I may not know where that boy is, but you’re a badass running around like that in heels without breaking a sweat. Remind me to double your paycheck by the end of the month.”
Huffing out exasperated breaths, hair hanging limp like a ghost’s with your hands perched over your knees, you go, “Thank you, Queen.”
“Right back at you, queen.”
You ran out of that throne room in a heartbeat.
Because you were sick of seeing faces that weren’t Huening Kai’s.
But first, you moonwalked back to the Queen. “May I borrow that shawl?”
Outside the dimly lit corridors of the back gates, ankle-deep snow gravelled the dry dirt.
It was dark, it was scary, it was cold and it didn’t matter, because you’re still within the vicinity of the palace but he’s not.
He’s leaving.
The thought rings choruses in your head, echoing within the hallways of whirling snowflakes and thin air.
He’s leaving he’s leaving he’s leaving.
He’s leaving and you’re staying and there’s a hundred people in the palace, in this kingdom, but no one can replace him because no one can be as much of a determined dreamer like Kai no one can achieve that level of ‘can’t-order-a-bar-of-soap-at-white-markets’ shy like Kai no one can be as noble and kind and brave as your Commander Knight Kai Kamal Huening no one can ever be Kai Kamal Huening… and you felt so stupid for not recognizing that sooner.
The snowflakes cleared, still falling. So. Very. Gradually.
A figure.
A figure in the distance, so faint, so far away but certainly not out of your reach.
On a horse trotted from the forest to the gates, slowly at first, and then quickening its pace later— Huening Kai.
Commander Knight Huening Kai zooming at lightning speed on top of Hazelnut because he saw you there out in the cold and he didn’t want you catching a flu in the middle of winter so he sped his way to the castle gates while covering the bottom half of his face going:
“Y/n? …What are you doing here?”
You whipped your falling shawl across your face. “Looking for you. I was looking all over the palace for you.”
Funny how, when you said that, Huening Kai found his throat dry. “I…”
“Your nose…”
He clasps his face with a swift hand motion. “It’s okay.”
“It’s bleeding.”
“I’m okay.”
“No you’re not.”
You hiked up your skirt, stomping over to Kai who has promptly dismounted his horse, bent forward and getting blood tracks on the snow and is obviously not okay.
“I’m fine, really, it’s just a bloody nose, it’s just—”
Damn this hippie tie dye shawl, once chocking at your neck, now unraveled, smoothened out in your hands. You draped the piece of fabric around Huening Kai’s shoulders, wiping it over his face.
Huening Kai’s eyes widened… because… that’s the only reasonable response there is when that could’ve been your hands holding his face— Well your hands are holding his face but there’s that thin layer of fabric blocking any skin-to-skin contact so it isn’t the same but it could’ve been.
If it weren’t for that bloody shawl (literally), it would’ve been your palm anchoring his jaw, resting against his cold cheek, your fingers grazing the tip of his nose… trailing down his face… his lips, they’d reach his lips and—
“Stay still.”
So he did.
He did a very good job at staying still.
At least he thinks he is.
He tried so hard to hold back, not to move or jitter or squeal and cry cupcakes and rainbows while hugging his knees and rocking back and forth in a dark corner because he’s a Commander Knight for God’s sake he should get a grip.
Your other hand hooked the back of his neck, pulling him closer.
Closer to your face. (!)
“What factory were you made in? God, you really are so big.”
Huening Kai wanted to scream.
Guttural and deep.
A voice in him told him to manually tear his hair out too.
He probably looked so stupid right now out in the snow in a preppy shawl, one side of the fabric hanging along his chest and the other side snaking around his neck and face like a distressed mummy.
“There. Now, show me the way to your place.” You grabbed Hazelnut who was catching snowflakes on her tongue, the other hand on Huening Kai’s back. “Got any firewood? We need to get you warm and cozied up.”
Huening Kai didn’t utter a word. He didn’t dare to, cheeks growing warmer each passing second.
Chest numbing, heaving shallow breaths at the foreboding realization…
“Hm. Okay. I guess it really was just a bloody nose.”
Huening Kai’s home wasn’t much.
For a Commander Knight, you’d expect his place to be shrouded in marble from head to toe, displaced furniture made from pure gold? No.
He lived in a bungalow less than half a kilometer away from the palace.
Everything was made of wood. The walls, the ceiling, the porch, it was all a distasteful muddy brown. Bland, but peaceful. It shocks you how, in his living room, his fireplace hasn’t burnt the whole thing up into ashes yet.
“I told you I’m okay and not suffering from, I don’t know, hypothermia.” He joked, laying on a fading floral couch propped on a square pillow, stripped of most of his clothing, the only thing remaining was a white blouse and black leggings clad to his body.
Yeah yeah alright I get it. Also.” Turning your head one way, you reached for the coffee table behind you. “I made you something.”
Huening Kai watched the smoking hot cup floating his way, “Tea!”
“Mhm, it’s jasmine, with two scoops of honey and frothy milk. Drink up, Hyuka. Wait— actually, don’t, it’s hot—!”
Huening Kai slurped on the hot latte with a straight face, blinking twice, steam falling on his face.
“… Is your tongue not half burnt yet?”
“No.” But his cheeks probably were.
They definitely were. Oh, to have a lady wrap you in a shawl then lead you home and coddle you up on your couch near the fire where it’s all nice and warm and have her serve you tea.
He didn’t ask for any of this! But… Huening Kai sighs dreamily, staring into the pool of latte. “Thank you. For all of this. I mean you… you didn’t have to.”
“Not a problem—”
“But you did. Even though I’m a full grown man. Almost. A Commander Knight, too. Thank you.”
You fanned the steam away from Huening Kai’s face. “But— hey, you’re my literal childhood friend of course I’d—”
“It’s really sweet, though! I like the way it tastes.” It took you a while to realize he was talking about the latte. “It’s like it came out of a cafe, did it not?”
Yup, that was definitely about the latte. “No, no it didn’t…” Why did your lips press on the way they did? Like the words were sitting right there but you couldn’t bring it up.
In your head, the prince’s big voidful eyes and those mild words that panged like warning signs.
In front of you, a happy knight you knew all those years ago with all smiles and good vibes getting the well-deserved rest he needs.
He went on, “Exactly! Do you want some? Oh, nevermind, you probably tried it already before giving it to me… or did you not? Y/n?”
“Why?”
“Hm?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
The latte grew a bitter aftertaste on the roof of his tongue.
“Why didn’t you tell me that you were leaving?”
Oh.
It hit Huening Kai like a baseball bat to his face.
The news.
He forgot about that for a second.
He wishes to forget about it completely. “Who… told you that?”
“Taehyun.” You weren’t looking at his face anymore. You couldn’t bare it. “Taehyun did.”
"Oh..." was all he could say. At least at the moment, that's all there was to say.
And then he sat back up, frantic, “I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry. I mean- I wanted to tell you but-"
You couldn’t bare looking at his face anymore because it wasn’t entirely Huening Kai’s fault, either.
You were busy, were you not?
Sketching, cutting, sewing.
But it was all part of the job, wasn’t it? Like with Huening Kai and his mission…
“But what? The timing was off? You were too scared to tell me? You thought maybe if you just shut up for a while you can easily slip away? From me?” The lines began to blur, and you couldn’t tell who you were angry at anymore, whether it was Kai or yourself or the whole damn universe. Whatever the case may be, you still cared about Huening Kai and his feelings, so you said, “Kai, that's... You're braver than you think you are, you're kind, you're caring. Don't you believe that?"
He knows.
He knows you won’t hurt him.
He knows your words aren’t meant to hurt him… yet, they do.
"You're right.” Huening Kai breathes out, rubbing the bodice of the cup, staring deeply upon pools and pools of lukewarm latte. “Everything, it’s right."
It hurts, he wanted to say, your words hurt.
And it mortified him now, how he found his throat dry.
How all he could do was look at you… as if he had the right to, as if doing that long enough will make him remember the image of you forever because that’s all he’ll live off of for the next… your hand, it reached his.
Holding him, clutching onto him.
In the brink of silence, the last words he wanted to hear from you as the creases around your eyes tightened was:
“Are you okay, Hyuka?”
“I… think so?”
“I was too harsh on you, wasn’t I? I’m sorry on my behalf for raising my voice on you.”
“It’s okay.”
"Okay. Okay then. I trust you… and... I love you, Hyuka."
A mild whisper, not even the fireplace could hear.
They were said just for him.
They were just for Huening Kai.
And he knew.
He just knew, deep in his heart, he knew.
That you did not mean that in the way he wanted it to.

almost ours (h.kk)
pairing: hueningkai x reader
genre: romance, angst, lovers to strangers.
🪼ྀིྀིྀིྀིྀི
it starts with a spark, a warm evening in hueningkai’s apartment. you’re both sprawled on the couch, legs tangled, his fingers absentmindedly brushing through your hair as you talk about everything and nothing at all. somehow, the conversation turns to the future—your future, together. it feels natural, so easy, to imagine what comes next for the two of you.
“i think they’d have your smile,” you murmur, fingers tracing lazy circles on his chest.
hueningkai’s brow arches in playful curiosity. “who?”
“our baby.” you say it as if the words are second nature, as if you’ve thought about it a hundred times before, the idea living just beneath the surface of your mind, waiting for the right moment to slip out.
he grins, a flush of warmth spreading across his face as his eyes soften. “our baby? we’re going there already?” his tone is teasing, but there’s something genuine in the way he says it—like he’s entertained the idea too. maybe not seriously, but enough to wonder.
you laugh, nudging him gently. “come on, i know you’ve thought about it.”
kai leans in closer, his breath warm against your ear. “okay, fine. they’d have your eyes, though. you know how everyone gets lost in them.”
you roll your eyes but can’t help the smile that curls at your lips. “maybe your sense of humor. or that laugh that makes everyone feel like they’re in on the best joke.”
he chuckles softly, the sound reverberating through you, making you feel safe, like this moment is all that matters. for a brief second, you let yourself really imagine it—a child with kai’s smile, your eyes, a perfect mix of the two of you. your little family. it feels distant, but close enough to touch.
the conversation continues, and for a while, it’s a sweet fantasy. the kind you both laugh about, adding details like what kind of music they’d like, if they’d be shy like kai or a bit more outgoing like you. it feels like the future is full of endless possibilities, and for that moment, you both indulge in the dream.
but time passes, and dreams start to fade.
the little cracks in your relationship begin to show. you argue more, the weight of your lives and schedules tugging at you from opposite ends. kai’s work pulls him away—he’s busy, distant. you find yourself retreating into your own space, too, where it’s easier not to feel the gap growing between you. the nights on the couch, laughing and dreaming, grow less frequent, replaced with quiet, uneasy silences.
one night, the argument bubbles over—about something insignificant, but it’s enough to shatter what’s left of the warmth you used to share.
“you always do this!” you yell, your voice cracking. “you push me away like you don’t even care anymore!”
kai’s face is a mask of frustration, but behind it, you see the same exhaustion, the same hurt you’re feeling. “i’m trying! do you think i want this? i’m overwhelmed, and i—” he cuts himself off, shaking his head. “i just… i don’t know how to fix this.”
it’s in that moment you realize what you’ve been avoiding—things aren’t working, and no matter how much you both care, you’re slipping through each other’s fingers. the dreams you built together, the child you imagined, the future you thought was certain—it all starts to fade, like smoke dissipating into the air.
the breakup happens quietly, the kind of thing you both saw coming but never wanted to acknowledge. he leaves, and the space he once occupied feels colder than it should. you know it’s for the best, but the ache in your chest doesn’t lessen with time. you keep thinking about what could have been—what *almost* was.
weeks later, you find yourself staring at the ceiling in your darkened room, memories flooding back. you think about the nights you talked about your future, how you and kai would laugh and plan a life that now feels impossibly far away. you wonder about the baby you imagined—would they have had his smile, your eyes? would they have filled the spaces between you, made everything worth it?
the thought lingers, a quiet pain that settles into your bones. the reality of your breakup stings, but it’s the loss of that dream—the one where you and kai made a life together—that keeps you awake at night.
you hate it. you hate that you let yourself believe in something that was never meant to last. but you can’t let go of it, not completely. because no matter how much time passes, the idea of what you could have had together remains, a bittersweet reminder of a future you’ll never see.
you close your eyes and imagine it one last time—a child with kai’s soft smile and your curious eyes, laughter filling a home that was once yours. a life that was almost yours.
but only almost.
end.

“Where is my friend, smiley?”
Idol!Huh Yunjin x Idol!Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
↳ synopsis: It was infuriating watching everyone ship you and your label-mate, you didn’t even know how anyone came to that conclusion, you didn’t even interact with her in the public! (Or from public knowledge you didn’t) So why would anyone know about your embarrassing relationship with her?
↳ cw: kinda mean reader, use of language, established relationship, reader is in a fake group, reader was in Produce 48, lovesick yunjin, hidden relationship, tooth rotting fluff (kinda a yapfest abt how much you love her…)
↳word count: 2.5k
a/n: literally my first time writing after awhile, usually my stories are old renditions/proofreads of stories i wrote back in 2023. so this is something im actually really proud of! also this story kinda was inspired by “tingin” by cup of joe more than it was inspired by “where is smiley” by serani poji… LOL
Tumblr media
౨ৎ It was odd, and everyone agreed, that the partnership with Huh Yunjin from Le Sserafim and Y/N from Serendipity was perplexing. The only thing connecting both of the girls was the industry they happened to be in, other than that they had nothing in common. Of course, the argument could be made that you and her both participated in the hit reality competition "Produce 48", but everyone knew that was quite a flawed counterpoint.
This was because you were practically thrown out after a few episodes before getting scouted by HYBE to debut months later. And you made it apparent that you didn't want to interact with anyone associated with the production of that show. So with Le Sserafim's debut years after yours, you found it baffling that your company wanted you to "hang out" with the rookie groups, it was infuriating. You worked so hard just to be put with a bunch of girls who couldn't care any less about how much you tried. Despite that, you found mountains and mountains of carefully orchestrated videos of “so-called" proof about you and Yunjin being the "best" of friends.
Whatever it was connecting the both of you was a mystery the fans must solve, and being honest with yourself, you found the whole circumstance mildly infuriating.
So at every turn you tried avoiding that mischievous redhead wherever you went, even when it came to recording meaningless video collaborations, you always mustered up a half-assed excuse. It came to the point where you went out of your way to hide in uncomfortable places just to avoid her friendly banter. Though no matter how hard you tried you could always hear her voice linger longer than it should have in the back of your head. Or maybe it was just how awfully loud her voice was, to the point that it left a ringing sensation in your ear.
It came as no surprise when you heard her voice calling out to your other members inquiring about your whereabouts. This was usually your cue to hide away from prudish questions, last time she had asked you "Do you come here often? You look like you do" unprovoked! Admittedly you knew she didn't mean any harm, but it still struck a cord within you, and knew she was probably going to run towards you asking all sorts of questions. You picked yourself up from whatever task was put on you and quickly ran away from her voice.
Of course, you knew what you were doing was more than ill-mannered, but god forbid she quizzes you one more time about trivial interests. But that was better than confronting her, confrontation was your worst enemy, and so was Yunjin's mannerisms. She was the physical embodiment of what a "dog personality" was, always eager to learn more and help everyone out. it kinda freaked you out to some jealous extent.
So trying your best not to start any conflict with this poor redhead, you decided to best course of action was to camp out around the building's designated lounge. Hoping today would not be the day she decided to check this certain deserted area. All you could do now was fish out your phone from your back pocket to read some forums about your performance and pray that no one would notice you here.
On the other hand, Yunjin was getting more and more hopeless trying to find you around the shared building. Feeling a little lost as she mindlessly drifted across section to section of the HYBE building. Though it hadn't taken poor Yunjin a while before spotting you from the corner of her eye. Her eyes lit up when she saw you mindlessly scrolling on your phone, the energy filling her up with excitement as she inched closer. As she came closer you couldn't help but notice her come closer and closer, realizing your interaction was inevitable.
Jerking your head up to meet her gaze, Yunjin waved her hand as she came within reach of you, letting out a fake smile before putting your phone down. You glanced at her and back to the empty seat resting in front of you, she beamed a bright smile before quickly and "casually" sitting down. Yunjin opened her mouth to speak before you cut her off with a hum.
"Remember, we're the only ones here so make sure to be a little quiet, alright?" You hushed, while she gave you an approving nod, she spoke up this time making it apparent that she was trying her best not to draw attention to the both of you, not like last time.
"Of course, I just wanted to see you it's been so long since I've seen your face..." Yunjin pouts as she looks around making sure the coast is clear from the nosy "enthusiast" who was always oh so curious about you and Yunjin's relationship. Your spine chilling at the thought of people making up such absurd theories about your closeness. The way they could put together such in-depth statements about the both of you always stumped you, how did they manage to procure all this information?
Even Yunjin claimed time and time again that she knew nothing about these fan-made theories, or how her fans managed to get old screen captures of both of you. In actual reality, Yunjin most definitely knew more than he should have! Mainly because it was practically her fault that images of the both of you were wafting around on the internet. See, she wasn't exactly the silent type when it came to friendships/relationships, she loved airing out her own business, which usually came back to bite her in the ass. So needless to say when her old Spotify account was coincidently launched into mainstream media people quickly connected the dots.
For someone who was adamant about avoiding her Juniors, you happened to be insinuated in every one of her, oddly, romantic, playlists. Either that be by a photo of the back of your head being the cover of a playlist titled "The Perfect Pair", or by the fact that all the descriptions were... Unusually corny... even by Yunjin's standards. Each careful string of words all connected with an underlying message about adoration for a certain someone. This didn't help her case since she always spoke about you in high regard whenever she was in a lonesome interview.
And the evidence staked against her was just the tip of the iceberg, it was in fact, much deeper than she'd originally like to admit. If someone with a genuine interest in your relationship with Yunjin researched just a little more about the both of you, they'd probably discover your relationship cut deep. And yes— as much as you tried to avoid how embarrassing your elimination was during Produce 48, you came across one of the greatest person you’d ever meet.
The way she laughed so carefreely, and how her eyes crinkled whenever she smiled, while her gaze brightly met yours. Everything about her made your heart stop, it made you freeze up whenever she looked at you during practice, and it made you such a fool. You knew it was for the better to avoid her, if you didn't, you'd probably be so whipped so hard that you couldn't focus on your own career. But it was so hard, especially whenever she'd run towards you after every practice and performance telling you how well you did. (No one actually noticed anything because you never really got any screen time sadly...) Even if you left fairly early on, Yunjin slipped you her number so you could both keep in contact.
After that day, the one thing you swore not to do, was instantly thrown out the window, as every waking moment you'd secretly visit her to give her your luck. And when things didn't go her way, and she was eventually eliminated, you comforted her in your arms. Before you debuted, you would actively seek your smiling friend, laughing under the neatly shaded picnic table outside the PLEDIS building. It wasn't much nor was it very significant, but being by her side was more than enough for you.
Even after you debuted, you never broke contact with your dear friend, words couldn’t describe how much she meant to you. She congratulated you every step of the way, and you backed her up twice fold, no matter how turbulent her career was becoming you’d stick by her side no matter what. Because to see her smiling face was more than enough for you and you wouldn’t let anything or anyone damage that. So when she finally told you how much you meant to her, you couldn’t help but reciprocate the feeling.
Though when she debuted and years later light babble started to circulate around the corners of the internet, you so desperately wanted to stay away from her, not to damage her career. It was difficult but her happiness, and that smile you treasured so much was on the line, and you wouldn’t—couldn’t let her lose that.
(Of course, she knew what you were doing, she wasn’t an idiot, but it just made her love you even more, the way you cared so much made her heart swoon deeper for you. Yunjin didn’t want to sway your plans because she didn’t want to ruin your career as well, so she too, went with it. But that didn’t mean she ever kept you a secret. You belonged by her side and she didn’t want anyone to forget that. So yes, she was subtly hinting towards her loving fans that her heart fell in the palms of someone else’s.)
So that was what led the both of you to the circumstances you were entangled in right now. Having to camp out in secluded places, where only your faint laughter could fill her ears, and hers only. You reminisced on your past with her, how carefree you both used to be during your youth, but you wouldn’t trade what you had right now for anything. Despite how secretive the both of you were, you were content with having her hands interlocking with your fingers. It was small, honestly not even comparable to how she used to intertwine your lips during rush hour on the bustling streets of New York, but both made your heart race nevertheless.
As she talked about how practice went, your eyes drifted to how she’d scrunch her eyes whenever she laughed about what happened with Eunchae. Despite all the hardships she’s dealt with over the years, she was still the carefree girl you fell in love with. It was honestly surprising how your eyes never faltered off of her even after years of dating. You tried to take the advice from your family and peers that this was some teenage infatuation, but even through crowds of people, you’d pick her gummy smile before anyone else’s.
Your mind drifted to how you’d give her the moon and back, even if no one was watching, you’d give her everything you had. Your eyes, your heart, your mind, anything you could give her, you would. Yunjin couldn’t help but notice your gaze falling from hers and to her cheeks, she curiously stopped her story to call out to you.
“Ah Y/N, are you okay? Are you tired, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have talked your ears off—“ You cut her off by raising your hands to her face, she looked confused as she cupped her face. Yunjin looked even more shocked when you started to pinch her soft cheeks. Squishing them like marshmallows before laughing to yourself silently.
She (very pathetically) tried to swat your hands away before finally giving in with a giggle, placing her hands on top of yours. “You have such an adorable smile, have I ever told you that?” You speak, pulling her cheeks up to force a smile, not realizing she was smiling from your comment. Caressing your hands with her thumb she spoke up once more.
“Yes actually, you always tell me that my love.” She responded, her cheeks flushing red as you continued to play with her face. The way her eyes squinted like a crescent moon made you adore her even more than before.
“Your smile is just so adorable, I’m afraid I might hide it away from everyone.” You joked as you continued, she looked at you even more lovingly than imaginable, if you weren’t in public, you’d probably be kissing her face all over instead of playing with it. You were so distracted by how charming she looked that you didn’t notice a meddlesome paparazzi sneaking in and taking a very sneaky photo of the both of you. (And even if you did notice, you didn’t have the power to stop them, they’d probably run off with the photos before you could even stand up. Though they would probably release the photos later on in the day, and it would rightfully annoy you. You couldn’t deny the fact you were a little grateful that the people knew, the Huh Yunjin was, Y/N L/N’s)
“There you go again— Hey! You know, that was the first thing you told me when we met.”
“Was it really?”
“Yeah, you told me how beautiful my smile was, I was kinda surprised since you approached me in such a huge crowd of people.”
As Yunjin recited the moment you met, you remembered in detail about the interaction, because that’s what changed the trajectory of your life. (The backstage was crowded with everyone getting ready in their bright pink and white uniform, the cameras weren’t rolling so it was awfully loud. Your broken Korean wasn’t helping your cause as you tried your best to converse with your fellow trainees. The sea of faces was difficult to remember, there were 96 contestants after all. Despite how deafeningly loud everything was, and how overwhelming everything felt, your eyes wonder towards a light-brown bob. Her face caught you off guard, she was stunning, and the way she smiled made the world go silent for a few moments. And you needed to talk to her, or this moment would slip through your tender fingers, so you pushed through the crowd just to have one conversation with her.)
“How embarrassing… I hope no one finds out about that.” You sheepishly admit as you move your hands away from her face and intertwine your fingers back to hers.
“I’m sure they’ll find away, but before they do, my smile will always belong to you, Y/N.” She lifted one of your hands back to her face and cupped it to one of her cheeks before smiling softly. Making the already silent lounge even more quiet, as your mind only focused on her delicate smile. The same one you’d turn tides to protect. Your smiley.

Summary: Gasping and panting raggedly for breath, you seemed to have done good by sliding down the fluorescent tunnel as a last resort! The King’s guards almost caught you!
What a maniac he was! How could someone be so obsessive? Your heart rate slows as you peer around, huh, this area seemed secluded. You deem it should be safe to take some rest here. Right? Goodness, you couldn’t trust this place at all! Little by little you feel your sanity tearing away.
“Oh? Who’s wandered into my little grove? Another guest for my tea party?” Your head snaps up seeing a tall man, with a coy grin as he clicks his tongue, walking towards you, “Oh you must be the pretty little guest I’ve heard so much about…oh then, join me, won’t you? For my little tea party?”
You had a feeling you couldn’t refuse even if you wanted to.
Tumblr media
Coughing and spluttering as you clamber through the tunnel like your life depends on it, you finally spot a halo of light towards the surface. With a rush of adrenaline surging through your veins, you make your way upwards and heave yourself above just as you hear the final chunks of soil crumble and fall sealing off the burrow.
Fuck. You sit on the fluffy purple grass panting heavily as though you had run a marathon. Sweat drips down your forehead to which you wipe off with your arm and you grimace feeling your lungs burn and legs ache; you look at your arms and legs seeing the scratches and dirt.
That was terrifying! You almost got buried alive! After a few minutes, you compose yourself and stand up wearily attempting to make sense of your new wacky surroundings. Muttering, you begin to walk around, “The fuck am I going to get into this time?”
Your eyes are drawn to a bright yellow arrow on a sign board. Several actually, of numerous colours all pointing in one direction. You gaze below seeing haphazardly hanging bunting and old party decorations which seemed to be decaying into the ground. Broken tea cups, paper plates, napkins.
Goodness… A shudder goes through you. Surely…you hadn’t truly ended up at the Hatter, did you? You wanted to avoid that madman at all costs from what you heard about him!
You eye the arrows again, it was perhaps best to never follow them, after all in Wonderland, nothing is as it seems. You peer at the bright pink bushes and grimace, maybe you could stray off the path a little. Pushing through the bushes, you begin to make your own way through this new space.
You weren’t exactly sure if this was a good idea or whether you were just getting yourself even more lost. But anything was better than Yeonjun! What a maniac he was! How could someone be so obsessive? After a few minutes, your eyes widen seeing an opening in the foliage and you push your way through with a glimmer of hope. You once again spot the sun stuck in the same spot in the sky, painting the opening with an oddly comforting golden hue.
Your heart rate slows as you peer around, huh, this area seems to be secluded. You deem it should be safe to take some rest here. Right? Goodness, you couldn’t trust this place at all! Little by little you feel your sanity tearing away.
You regard a mossy boulder beside a broken sign which seems to read “This Way!” Your heart drops. Another sign? Even though you strayed off the path…? This place was horrid!
Your legs were beginning to hurt even more; just a little break, that’s all you wanted. You decide to settle on the boulder with an exasperated sigh; your hand rests on your forehead as you pitifully attempt to relax in the godforsaken place.
After a mere moment of silence, a bright voice destroys your peace, “Oh? Who’s wandered into my little grove? Another guest for my tea party?” Your head snaps up seeing a tall man, with a coy grin as he clicks his tongue, walking towards you, “Oh, you must be the pretty little guest I’ve heard so much about…oh then, join me, won’t you? For my little tea party?”
Regarding him with a blank gaze, you remain silent and stiff. He tilts his head before letting out a cackle which startles you. His eyes…they twinkle with mischief, his wide smile. His umber hair sprawls haphazardly over his forehead, sharp, chiseled features which had your heart fluttering. A red diamond on his left cheekbone catches your eye. His jawline dangerously sharp with thin lips that always seemed to be in a permanent coy smile. Who was he?
The vibrant grass bristles as he takes a large step forward. You note his formal attire, indeed suitable for a tea party. A white satin shirt and beige waistcoat with brown rabbit ears embroidered below one of the breast pockets. A rabbit? Another one? A small black iron key, tiny in fact, hangs like a charm on his necklace.
The mysterious man seems to enjoy your expression of confusion as you regard him intently as he grins, “Does my appearance, please you so, precious?” He skips on over and your eyes widen as he brazenly looks you over, walking around you and observing you from all angles as if you were some museum exhibit.
“Mm,” he hums, intrigued and your breath hitches as his gloved hand grips your chin tilting it up. Goodness, he was comically tall, even from where you were sitting or were you just incredibly short? You stand up instinctively and grimace, seeing his towering height.
The male smirks, his thumb brushing over your lower lip as his eyes gleam flirtatiously, “Hm, well, aren’t you a pretty thing? A sight for sore eyes even, the last one was so dreary to look at, you know? I’m glad there’s still pretty ones like you that still stumble in here.”
You pry his hand off, shoving it away with a glare, “Who are you and what do you want?” A blatantly loud cackle escapes his lips and his eyes widen manically, “Oh come on! It’s always the same question with you guests! Lighten up! Why always think so pessimistically, precious?”
Snapping, you respond, “Oh I don’t know, maybe getting hunted down by the King of Hearts? Seeing someone innocent get dragged away to be beheaded? Not knowing any way out of this deranged place?”
He goes momentarily silent placing an almost sympathetic hand on your shoulder, leaning down with a frown and you wearily lean back before he startles you with a loud guffaw. You turn around with a grumbling mutter; you weren’t going to waste your time.
A yelp escapes you as a hand grips your shoulder and abruptly spins you around. You crash into a firm chest, your nostrils filled with sweet scent, hints of ginger, peppermint, maybe caramel?
You tilt your head upwards to see him with a bright smile unfazed by your attitude. His fingers slide down your arm before interlocking with yours, “Oh precious, don’t be like that. It hurts my delicate feelings, you know? Don’t tell me you plan to leave without attending my tea party.”
He sighs dramatically, “It’s been ages since I’ve had anyone but the Hatter attend my tea party and the Mice of course. I think even once the Caterpillar did, only once. He didn’t really like the pranks I played, but that’s besides the point.”
Before you could respond to the barrage of words that made absolutely no sense to you, he interrupts with wide eyes and a gasp, grabbing your wrist and dragging you with him.
“Hey-!“ you struggle helplessly, your feet skidding and stumbling in the grass. His grip is unforgivably tight and he seems to overpower you with ease as he resumes, “How so, so, so, rude of me! I never even introduced myself to you precious, goodness it’s been so long since I’ve entertained a guest, I’ve apparently forgotten my manners! Forgive me.”
You grit out, “I don’t care- let me go!” He releases a delightful chuckle, ignoring your struggle and plea with a blissful expression, “In Wonderland I am the March Hare, or more personally, Kai.” Briefly, he peers over his shoulder to see you still pulling and tugging against his hand and he snickers, “You’re quite adorable when you struggle like that, you must have really gained the King’s fervour.”
You stiffen, heart racing, how did he know? Kai smiles widely, “Oh don’t panic, you’ve come to the right place, that pompous ruler of ours never attends my tea parties no matter how many invites I send him. Hmph, perhaps he prefers the Hatter’s more grand-scale tea parties. Huh, or maybe it’s my games he doesn’t like. Whatever, I don’t really care for his presence.”’
“Now that I think about it, it really has been a long time since I’ve had a guest. The King is so, so, selfish! He kills those he doesn’t like? Why not just send them my way? I’m not mean like him, so you don’t need to worry.” His words begin to blur out as you try to register the onslaught of information.
A giggle escapes his lips, “I’m just a lonely Hare, always having tea alone with occasional mice and egregious Hatter. How boring, you’d think I’d have gone insane?” Kai bursts out laughing, startling you.
Wasn’t he already insane? Goodness if this is supposed to be sane here, then what was considered insane here? You grimace and your eyes widen as you take in the new surroundings.
A shriek escapes your lips as you see several clothed mice scurry past your legs and you stumble into Kai’s back. He chuckles, “Oh it seems you’ve spooked the mice. Or, they’ve spooked you,” another crazed little laugh leaves his lips. Kai picks one up by the tail shoving it in front of your face making you scream and stumble back. What the actual fuck?
He cackles at your reaction, “Not a fan of mice? What a shame. Imagine how I feel then?” He carelessly tosses it down with a squeak and you flinch. Oh god, what have you gotten yourself into?
Kai leans down with a deep gaze, “But it’s okay, I’ve got you now, to entertain and not these pipsqueaks I call guests! You, you, you, are much better, aren’t you, precious?” A wave of unease and fear runs through your body. You had to get out of here. Surely, nothing could be as bad as the King of Hearts?
With a grand spin and skip, he snaps his fingers and as if by magic, several twinkling lights and little lanterns (with unfortunate fireflies trapped inside) begin illuminating, giving the area a warm glow. Your eyes process the tea party set up.
There was a long mismatched table set, beneath a whimsical tree with vibrant, oversized flowers, wrapped with various string lights and colourful bunting. The tablecloth is a patchwork of different colours and patterns which clash. The tea cups are an assortment of shapes and sizes with a grand teapot with its spout shaped and painted like a purple elephant’s trunk. What the hell?
The chairs are quirky, unstable, some that wobble and the legs twist into weird shapes. There’s an eclectic mix of wacky treats, most notably the enormous scones, cakes with impossible layers and…giant sandwiches? Fucking hell, you’d believe you were on drugs if it weren’t for everything that happened earlier!
“Like it?” Kai asks, over-excited. You grimace, “It’s certainly…something.” Rolling his eyes, he grabs your arm, dragging you towards one of the chairs and you hiss, “Wait-!”
He pulls out a chair and gestures with a tilt of his head to sit. You huff, “No way.” Kai grins at you, placing his hands on both of your shoulders, “I’m all for playing hard to get, I can work with you, precious.” You yelp as he shoves you down onto the seat and pushes the chair with you on it against the table roughly, rattling everything on it making the remaining mice scatter.
Kai pushes several plates of food and some cutlery towards you and brightly hums, “Eat, eat, up! You need energy.” Looking at the food, your stomach doesn’t rumble, in fact, you feel sick.
“Oh precious, are you worried I poisoned it? I get it, your fears are justified. The King likes to do that doesn’t he? Remember I'm not cruel like the king?” His assurance doesn’t seem to alleviate your anxiety at all.
You murmur nervously, “Really, I’m not hungry.” He takes one of the cupcakes on the table, peeling off the striped wrapper and takes a massive bite; the chocolate smearing on his lips. After swallowing, he wipes his lips with a pink napkin, “See? Nothing happened to me? Tastes really good, precious.”
You gaze down at one of the plates presented and see a slice of chocolate cake and some biscuits on another plate. Meanwhile, Kai takes the liberty to pour you some tea in a comically large cup. This all feels disorienting to you. He urges once more, “Go on, don’t be shy, eat away, to your heart's content. Come on! Don’t make me say it thrice!”
With shaky hands you pick up the cake slice, you bring it to your lips. Kai watches you with great anticipation and you bite down. A burst of rich, creamy chocolate flavour bursts in your mouth brimming with ecstasy. Fuck, it tastes so good! What the hell?
Kai’s lips form a sly smile, “Oh? I saw that twinkle in your eyes. You like it, don’t you?” You shake your head, your mouth still full with cake. This damn cake!
A grin forms, “Oh? Are you embarrassed? I’ll have you know, this cake was once the favourite of the King. But he stole my recipe and now makes it at the palace,” Kai huffs.
You take another bite and he coos, “Just like that, you have no idea how happy it makes me to spoil my dearest, pretty guests.” If there was poison in this, no doubt it tasted good. Well, if there was one way to go out, this would be it. But oddly enough, as you continue to eat, nothing happens. So you take more, a biscuit there, a bite of a scone here, a touch of cream, a cupcake, some toffee and a sip of tea.
Your stomach feels full, incredibly so. In fact you hadn’t eaten since you arrived. How was everything on this wild table so good? Kai had helped himself to his own food alongside you, talking on and on, badmouthing the king, the Hatter and the mice.
Yawning, you sigh, feeling tired. Perhaps you’d gotten carried away with your food fest. Shit…did you over indulge yourself? It had been awhile… and it tasted so good. It’s not so wrong is it?
“And then I said to him..” Kai’s voice becomes muffled and your vision darkens as your eyes flutter shut. Just… a little nap.
Kai stops talking and peers at you fondly. “What a pretty sleeping face, it touches my heart.” He walks over cupping your cheek and he snickers seeing the slight smear of frosting on your lips and he wipes it off with his thumb. “How endearing, indeed. I could just eat you up, precious.” He takes another moment to gaze over your features, lingering a little longer on your parted lips, before shaking his head with a smile.
How quaint indeed…
A warm fuzzy feeling envelops you and you smile at ease. Was this all just a horrific nightmare? Were you finally going to wake up back in your bed at home?
With a croaky groan, your eyes flutter open, light filling your gaze. You peer around and go to move when you feel a constraint against your wrists, they’re bound together. A shriek escapes your lips, “What the fuck? What’s this-?” You regard the pink silk ribbon tied around your wrists with delicate care with a pretty bow on top.
It may not have been poison but it was a sedative! Shit. Your head pounds as you see double of everything, as if one wasn’t enough for your overstimulated brain!
A laugh reverberates and you turn your head to see the March Hare in all his glory with a gleaming, illustrious smile, as he tugs at the hem of his gloves. “Ah, you’ve awoken, precious. How soundly you slept, I could get used to seeing such a sight daily.”
You snarl, “You maniac! What have you done?” He snickers, “Oh? What’s with the sour mood? Woke up on the wrong side of bed?” You snap, “Oh fuck off! Release me, I’ve indulged you haven’t I? I ate your fucking cake and desserts, what have I done to deserve this?”
Kai pouts at the use of your profanity, “Ah, ah, ah, no improper words at my tea party, this is a place of decorum after all. Only the Hatter’s Parties are so frivolous!”
You sneer, “Oh tying your guests hands together is considered decorum now, is it?” Kai snickers leaning down behind your chair, his lips close to your ear, “Be thankful I didn’t tie your legs together too. But hm, you raise a point. One that I won’t take into account, because,” he walks to the left of you with an extravagant wave of his hands, “My party, my rules!”
You seethe and he coos, “Oh don’t look at me like that, you’ll make me like you even more! How cute you look when you’re so frustrated!” His words send a tornado of anger surging through you. The sheer audacity of this man!
Rolling his eyes, he teeters as he walks around the table, “Anyway,” he snickers, “I didn’t kill you did I? Poison you? Stab you? You should be thanking me actually! If I were the Hatter, I’d have you hanging upside down on that tree over there gagged and swinging like a pendulum on a grandfather clock.”
You shiver at the thought, holy shit. This was insane! He hums, crossing his arms, “After all, I like my share of fun. What makes you think I’d just be content at seeing my little guest eat away? Sure that’s enlightening, but I want,” he approaches you once more, leaning down, placing his hands on either side of the armrests of the chair, caging you in, “…some real fun.”
His eyes beam into yours sending a dark shudder through you as his lips morph into a manic, just a little too-wide of a grin, “You can give me that can’t you? You’ve been good for me so far, haven’t you? You won’t die. None of my guests die! Well, unless they try to leave and break the rules I set, then let’s just say, I… put them out of commission for a while!”
Out of commission? Break the rules? Leave? What the fuck! Oh, he was deranged in his own twisted way. You definitely had to get out here!
Kai frowns, stepping back with a huff, “You don’t get it do you! Everyone always tries to leave! So that’s why I’ve bound your wrists! I give my guests so much freedom and it always backfires!” His eyes widen immensely as he grasps your shoulders shaking you with ferocity, “You can’t blame a Hare for becoming lonely? I just want someone to have tea and play with!”
For the first time you see hesitation, panic, anxiety in his brown eyes, causing your breath to hitch. “You’re different right? I can just tell, you’re not like the other pathetic losers that come here! You made it past THE Red King of Hearts, you’re definitely special!” His rambling makes your head spin.
“You liked the desserts and food right? I can make more. The fun will never end! We can play all my games, and it won’t even have any dire consequences, I just want someone to entertain me. I know you might be a little angry…but I'm sure you’ll calm down soon enough, won’t you?” He splutters with a manic gaze, shaking you further and you yell, “Stop!”
Kai freezes, breaking out of his rambling and manic muttering to peer into your frightened gaze and he coos softly, “Goodness, look at me rambling again, my apologies, I do this quite often with those I’m comfortable with. I- I- promise I’ll try to keep it in check.” He laughs brokenly, “Ah, you’ll have to get used to that. Don’t want you getting sick of me, would we?”
Too late for that, you think. Wait…get used to it? You stiffen. He wouldn’t let you leave. Like forever?
“…So I can’t leave your tea party?” You stammer. His brows furrow and he smiles, “Why would you? I’ve got everything here? And who knows when the next guest will arrive? The King probably wouldn’t even let them come here. Or they’d be stupid, and die on the way. Why take my chances when I have you already?” He speaks as though none of his words were deranged.
Shakily, you utter, “But…my home? I don’t belong here. I picked up that invitation by accident!” You splutter further, panic running through your system, “T-Think about it, always having the same guest, you’ll get bored of me, like you got bored of the Mice and the Hatter!”
Kai remains silent for a moment and a smirk appears on his lips as he suddenly cups your jaw, “Aw, are you trying the king’s method of reverse psychology? How adorable.”
Your face pales and lips quiver, “K-Kai, please. You have a heart, you’re sane right? You’re better than the King in all respects, you’ve treated me well and haven’t hurt me so far? Please,” you plead in desperation.
He clicks his tongue, “Tsk, tsk, none of that from you. Keep those pretty lips sealed, won’t you? I’ve finally got the one thing I’ve been wanting for a long time and you think your meager pleas will melt my heart and I’ll just let you go so I can be in solitude once more? Please!” Kai lets out a crazed laugh throwing his head back and clutching his stomach.
“Oh precious, no one’s really like you at all! Here you are, legs unbound yet you’re asking me so politely to leave instead of bolting off with tied wrists!” Kai cackles. Your shoulders droop and you frown.
You weren’t stupid, you knew you could run. But you didn’t want to find out the horrendous consequences of such an action. After all, he said he doesn’t like breaking the rules.
“I’ve got so much in store for you, if you managed to surpass the King, then your brain up there must surely be big, hm?” Kai grins, pressing the tip of his index finger to the center of your forehead and you flinch.
Muttering under your breath, you say, “I just want to go home.” Kai freezes and a dark expression crosses his face, “Home? Don’t be daft. This is your home now. Why in Wonderland would you return to that dismal place you call home? Tell me does your home have Giant Tulips and Neon Roses? Games galore?”
You snap, “I’ve had enough!” Your voice cracks, “I’m exhausted.” He groans dramatically, “Oh don’t be like that, you just woke up! I’ve worked so hard to set up some games for you. Well, that’s the one thing I can be better at than the Hatter at.”
“Games?” You sigh with a shriveled expression. You didn’t want to play his stupid games. With a mighty clap of his hands, he starts, “So! Let’s play!” Your mind whirrs, you had to get out of here, otherwise you’d be perpetually stuck here! Think, think, think Y/n! He resumes over-excited, “The first game is Shrink Maze!”
All of a sudden, dozens of dressed-up mice climb the table and push all the cutlery, napkins, holders, plates and dishes into what seems to be a maze. What did you just witness?
“Well done little ladies and gents,” Kai titters. Reaching into his pocket, he brings out a tiny vial filled with purple liquid. “Drink this nifty little thing and you’ll become the size of a mouse. Convenient right? I always did like becoming a tiny, put the entire world into a new perspect-“
You had it! All games had prizes! You just had to beat his games and make sure he had no way of refusing you! Your eyes scan around as he rambles on. There was a small iron gate with a faded red arrow. Through the foliage you see the billowing checkered valleys that lay ahead. That had to be your way out! It had to be, either way it was a chance you were willing to take!
Kai’s eyes narrow as he sees your line of sight and he leans down with a smirk, “Ah, ah, ah, looking to escape are we? That’s the Hatter’s territory precious, I don’t think your mind will handle his insanity.”
Oh whatever, yes, yes, you got the drill by now. Who said you actually had to meet the Hatter? You’d take your chances; you made it this far haven’t you? But you had confirmed one thing. That gate was indeed the exit out of the Hare’s Tea Party Grove.
He hums amused, “Even if you somehow staggered over there without me seeing, you’d only find it locked and the key is only in one place that only I know. So…too bad!” He lets out a wavering guffaw making you flinch.
You hum defiantly, “Your games. I’ll play. On one condition. A winner’s reward.” Kai tilts his head intrigued by your proposition, “Oh? Feeling cocky are we? What makes you think I’d agree to such terms then, precious?”
“You like games, and I’m sure after this long and many guests. You like winning them. Outsmarting your guests. Outwitting them. Seeing them struggle,” you firmly speak, gazing into his eyes with a racing heart.
“Huh,” he muses, folding his arms, eyes twinkling in amusement, “Very astute of you to observe such a thing. I do. I do like winning. I do like seeing my guests fumble about and lose.” With a shaky breath, you proclaim, “If I lose, I’ll stay. I’ll stay with you. Forever. We’ll have tea forever. If I win..”
He sharply interrupts you, “Which you won’t-“ you interrupt him back, “If I do, then you’ll grant me freedom. The key to that gate over there.” Kai throws his head back laughing; his fist slams on the table making the mice squeak as he finds your words the funniest someone has ever uttered.
“You’re bold, you know that? No wonder you made it past the King.” Your jaw clenches and your hands become clammy. Bite the bait! Kai utters with a sly grin, “Fine, I suppose I do love to win. I’ll bite,” he leans down startling you, “The bait I mean, not you. Unless…” “No-“ you sharply utter with a glare making him cackle.
“I do look forward to seeing you fumble and flap about.” You scoff, “As if.” With a leap behind you, he pulls you up, “Up, up, up, I’m getting bored from all this talking. As I was saying, Shrink Maze! See this lovely maze my mice friends have set up for you. You have to make it through to the exit.”
You glance at the maze. Seemed easy enough, you already had found the way out, simple. You could win this easily. All of a sudden, he grabs your jaw and presses the vial to your lips, “Spit it out and I’ll dislocate your jaw open into a permanent laugh,” he warns.
Your eyes widen, body tensing as the sickeningly sweet liquid slides down your throat. A tingle appears in your fingers and soon spreads like wildfire across your body. All of a sudden you feel lightweight and you find yourself tiny falling towards the now ginormous table, screaming.
Kai cackles, catching you in his hand and you tremble seeing his sheer size and dark gaze, “How cute you are, I could just crush you in the palm of my hand. Smoosh.” He drops you down onto the table and the monstrously sized cups, plates and decorations tower over you. You couldn’t see shit now! You didn’t even memorise the maze, fuck!
With a twisted smile, “Go on now, make your way through the maze.” With shaking limbs, you walk into the maze. Okay… you do recall having to take the first right and then one left, but that’s about it. So, you do just that. As you’re at a junction, you freeze hearing a terrifyingly loud squeak.
Kai’s voice resounds, “Oh sorry, I forgot to mention, the mice will be playing too. I did tell them that they’d get a nice chunk of cheese if they caught you, so I do apologise if they are tad aggressive, precious.” Thudding footsteps resound and you release a piercing shriek as you see a furry enemy turn the corner towards you sniffing and squeaking.
Fuck this! You hiss seeing your bound wrists, it made running so much harder! With your utmost you go straight, take a left, another left and another right. You had no fucking clue where you were heading? Another set of footsteps vibrate the table and tears brim your eyes.
Kai grins, “Oh dear, seems you’re at a dead end. Should I point them in the right direction, they’re only a wall away from you precious?” You snarl pint-sized, “Shut up!” Another squeak resounds.
You had to be quiet, they hadn’t found you here yet. You wrack your brains viciously. You peer up seeing the gargantuan decorations and chairs, back at Huening Kai. Hm, if you took into account their positions. Kai was East, you were the closest to him, so you were on the East of the maze. The exit was near the third chair of the table. Yes, yes! Maybe you could do this!
With your body and mind working overtime, you use the position of the humongous furniture, items and surroundings to help locate yourself and find your way through.
A shrewd shriek echoes and you scream seeing another mouse charging towards you from the right and your eyes flick around. You were this close, you were not going to let some furry nuisance ruin that! You couldn’t lose no matter what! The billowing napkin catches your eye and with speed, you grab it and hoist it above you charging towards it, the cloth flapping and puffing under the wind. The mice adorning an apron squeaks, eyes widened with confusion and fear and scurries off. Despite its size, it was still a skittish mouse!
A disapproving click of the tongue is heard from above - Kai. You let out a delirious laugh, your idea was stupid, stupid enough to work in this dreadful place!
“Ugh, how dreadful. Stupid mice,” he mutters with an irritated glare. Running, you take another right; the third chair now towering over you. It was right there! You grin widely seeing the path only turn right and with all your might you sprint.
The exit appears and you rush past with a foolishly wide grin as you peer up at him panting and sweat-ridden, “Done!” Your heart slams against your ribcage, legs burning and lungs on fire.
With a roll of his eyes, he picks up a green-rimmed tea cup and your eyes widen as he hovers it over you and a few drops fall on you causing you to shriek. A familiar tingling sensation appears and in the blink of an eye you find yourself back to normal size. Kai snarks, “A growing potion brings things back to regular size. Sorry, I suppose you are a bit soaked. Not many have made it past, so huh, good job.”
You grumble and he muses suddenly cupping your jaw to face him, “Though the sight of you soaked isn’t too bad either.” Glaring, you mutter, “I won. Next game.”
Kai grins, “Eager are we? You truly are different from the other guests. It really does make me want to just keep you all to myself, I bet we’d have so, so, so much fun together!” He pushes you to sit down with an excited flurry and Kai smiles at you, “Let’s talk.” You deadpan. “No, I mean, that’s the game, precious. Come on keep that pretty head of yours up to speed!”
You scoff at his remark and he grins sitting down opposite you, “What is the colour of the wind?” Your brows furrow. The fuck? He snickers at the bamboozlement on your visage.
“Give me an answer that satisfies my two questions and we’ll progress to the next game!” Kai chuckles loudly before he groans, exasperatedly, placing a dramatic hand on his forehead, “Give me a boring one and I’ll just consider that you lose.”
“That isn’t fair! You just won’t let me win!” You grit your teeth, this game wasn’t objective at all! You could be however creative you wanted and he could deny you all he wanted! This sly bastard!
“My Grove, my rules, precious, now stop pouting and start thinking!” He giggles. He really was determined to get you to stay; you gaze into his eyes, a spark of hesitance. Ah, ha! He didn’t like the fact you traversed the maze. That you won. That you had the possibility to escape. You’d sown the seed of doubt in his mind.
The gate. You just needed the key to the gate. If you could just find it. “Tick-tock!” You snap, “You didn’t mention a time limit?” Kai smiles mischievously, “Did I not? Whoops, well there is now, I’m sorry precious.” You glower at him, “Secondly, there is no time here!” He pouts, “Don’t ruin the experience, precious, here I’ll count then. Twenty, nineteen..”
You release a frustrated groan. The key. Fuck! You needed to keep him occupied. An answer he likes, something nonsensical, not logical perhaps?
“Uh…” you pick your brains. “Ten, nine..” he grins. You splutter, “The c-colour of the wind..” you eye the fluffy marshmallows on one cupcake, “is a thousand fluffy marshmallows and- and, forgotten rain..bows?” You finish unsurely.
Kai registers your answers before cackling maniacally, “Oh my goodness!” He shakes your tied hands over-excited, “Wonderful, wonderful!” His eyes meet yours with a twisted pleasure, “You are perfect to play with. Perfect. You just get me!” Remaining silent, you give him a glare making him laugh once more.
He leans forward gripping your wrists more tightly, “Mm, I did adore that nonsensical answer but you already won once right, so? Mm, no. You could have been even more nonsensical.” You snarl, “You-! This is unfair, completely unfair! How can I win then?”
He shrugs, his fingers reaching up to nonchalantly fiddle with his shirt collar, “Not my problem precious. Why would I help you leave?” You sneer, “I think you’re just afraid that I’ll escape.”
Kai painfully tugs at your bindings with a manic gaze and tilt of his head as he grits out, “One loss is already too many in my head. I don’t like, don’t like it at all. Also, I’d prefer to not let my pretty little guest win her prize of freedom. So, suck it up, precious and do what so say, when I say it, or I’ll just make you play for eternity.”
Kai’s fingers move up to fiddle unbothered with his necklace, the tiny key swiveling between his fingertips with ease. Wait. Your heart drops to your stomach as realisation fills your senses. The key! The only key here you’d seen was that key around his neck. Or were you just thinking a little too outside the box? Maybe you didn’t have to go through all this horseplay, no, you could just take a shortcut!
Gears in your mind grind and rattle. He did not underestimate you, that much was clear. He had changed his games up so much so that there was no way to win! You had to grab that key, and make a run for it! Huh…but the key was tiny. How could it fit in that gate’s keyhole?
“Hello?” Kai’s voice and sudden hand on your jaw breaks you out of your trance, “I’m waiting, don’t tell me I’ve melted that pretty head of yours into mush already?” You scoff shaking his hand off, “No. Hit me with the next question.” You just had to keep him occupied as you think of a way to get that key.
Kai grins widely, “Hmm…If a teapot…could sing, let’s say, opera. What genre would it perform?” As if to mock your predicament, he grabs the teapot and tilts it into his cup pouring more tea. What the type of question was that?
You snap, “You’re insane.” He giggles frantically sipping his tea, “Why thank you. Everyone always calls the Hatter insane, but sorely underestimate my abilities!” You seethe at his irritatingly charming smile.
“Just- Just give me more than twenty seconds this time, please,” you plead, feigning desperation. He tilts his head and coos, “Aw, that’s cute, I like the tone you get when you plead, fine, I shall allow it.” You have to refrain from sneering - he only allowed it because he was going to reject whatever nonsensical answer you came up with!
Your gaze flickers over the assortment of items on the table, lingering on the sharp knife beside the cake. The very cake that sedated you. Shit, you couldn’t even get him to eat it, he wasn’t stupid. Your eyes settle on the green-rimmed teacup, the growing elixir. Your eyes widen, the key- you could grow it back to original size (well, if your hypothesis was correct!)
It made the most sense, what place was more safe to keep the key than next to his own neck, shrunken down inconspicuously? You smile extra wide and he raises a brow, “What’s gotten you so happy, precious?”
“I’ve found an answer that I think you’ll like a lot,” you stand up. A sly smirk lines his lips, “Oh really? I have terribly high expectations, you know. Do enlighten me then.”
You brush past him with a calm gaze as you walk towards the teacup with the elixir. “The genre it would perform would be teatime tragedy.” Kai’s smile falters and he grimaces in disgust, “That’s your answer? How boring.”
You shrug, “Really?” Despite your bound wrists, you hook your finger into the handle of the teacup and raise it precariously. “It’s about the dramatic tales of an evening tea party that goes terribly,” you throw the teacup at him and his eyes widen as the liquid splashes across his face and torso. You finish, “Wrong.” With a bright hum, you gleam, “Like that.” Kai’s eyes snap to meet yours infuriated, “H-How dare you, such insolence! At my tea party? I’m the host!” You snap, “And I’m the guest!”
“Following my rules,” he argues flagrantly, “I did. I answered your question,” you grit out. He snarls displeased by your sudden defiance and your eyes sparkle as you see the key on his neck grow slowly. You had to make sure he didn’t notice!
With a rough tug, his fingers wrap around your neck and your lips part in surprise, hands against his chest. “Don’t test my patience precious, no matter how much you play, I won’t ever, ever let you win. Got that? Get that drilled into your lovely little skull.”
Your gaze meets his, breaths tumbling out. His body heat seeps through your clothes. His face was even prettier this close. His sharp nose, infuriated eyes, high cheekbones, a man sculpted by the gods themselves. Too bad he was a maniac, you’d have fawned over him in the real world. You see his eyes flicker to your lips back to your gaze, “There’s just something about you. I don’t like. At the same time, I don’t hate.”
So close. The key was so close. You almost flinch when his other hand moves a stray strand of your hair out of your face and delicately cups your cheek, “Such a pretty face, pretty eyes, cute nose,” his thumb tugs down at your lower lip making your breath hitch. Kai takes notice, smirking, “Such irresistible lips, that spew such irritable nonsense.”
“And you don’t?” You counter back breathless. Kai chuckles, “I do, but it’s better when you do it.” You lean closer, “Really? Do I win then? Could you just let me have this second win?” You plead. Kai clicks his tongue with a condescending grin, “Mm, you know I can’t do that, even when you beg so pretty, precious.”
Well, who needed his permission anyway? With a sudden jump, your hands clamp over the key and with a rough tug, you run past him. He screeches in agony, the friction of the necklace against his skin and the sound of it snapping from the sheer force of you pulling it off his neck. You peer down, the key was indeed large enough!
“You-!” The March Hare snarls enraged as he sees the key. He lets out a deranged laugh, “You clever, clever, little thing! So you figured it out all this time huh? You never planned to indulge me at all!” He lunged forward with an arm outstretched. You shriek, kicking one of the chairs in his direction to hold him back a little longer. You could NOT afford to drop this key!
Bolting towards the gate, you pant madly, you could do it! You were so close, so close- your fumble with the key inserting into the keyhole trembling. Quick, quick, quick!
“You misbehaving brat, after all that hospitality-“ you scream as you feel his hand on your shoulder and you twist yourself around head butting him in the face making him groan. Blood drips to the ground from his nose, sliding down his lips and chin as he coughs.
Tremoring, you twist the key, it doesn’t open, “Fuck!” You scream. You twist it the other way and you hear a rusty click followed by a groan as the worn gate slowly swings open. As you go to sprint, Kai’s hand grips the back of your shirt with frightening strength. Fear envelopes your gaze, adrenaline pulsates through you.
So you do the one thing that comes to mind, with your leg, you kick the gate backwards to a close and a painful string of curses leaves his lips as the heavy gate slams onto his arm with a sickening crunch, releasing you. Kai bellows in agony, falling to his knees; the surge of pain bearing too much for him, perhaps even a fracture of his arm.
He sneers, panting like a rabid dog, “That cursed little-“ Kai’s lips form an eerily wide grin as he yells out, “It’s a death s-sentence for you now precious! Oh I hope the Hatter treats you even better than I did!” A deranged laugh leaves his body as he clutches his arm, throwing his head back as tears run down his face.
Indeed the March Hare would spiral further into the abyss of insanity and isolation once more it would seem.
If only your hands weren’t tied together, it would have made this entire thing easier. You sprint, your calves searing and beginning to seize up, fuck, you couldn’t afford to look back. What if he was still chasing you? You shudder, powering through. You needed to find a way to cut this ribbon off, it was beginning to hurt your skin!
After what seemed like forever, you finally slow down into a jog and then finally a walk. Your limbs tremble from exhaustion. The foliage around you seems to morph and you begin seeing various trinkets scattered around the blue and purple plants. Where was this absurd place? Surely you couldn’t have ran into the Hatter already?
Walking cautiously, you peer around. All of a sudden a raspy voice startles you and you spin around trying to locate it, “Well, well, what’s this? A new guest? It’s been so long, dear.” It chuckles, “Up here.”
You tilt your head up and your eyes narrow as you finally see a large bluish-purple caterpillar lounging in the trees, with a lazy smile and hookah in one hand. It was incredibly camouflaged - holy shit!
“What’s with the bound wrists? Asking for a death sentence? If the Hatter finds you like this, he’ll have a real jolly time with you.” You feel nauseous at the thought and you awkwardly ask, “Ah, you wouldn’t mind untying me, cutting this off would you?” It heartily laughs, taking another breath from its hookah.
“I don’t know, why should I?” It muses, its many arms moving. You sigh exhausted, “Please, please don’t make my life anymore difficult than it is. You know what, never mind, I’ll find a sharp rock or branch or something.”
Before you walk off, it scuttles down making you grimace and reaches around in the messy foliage bringing out a small blade, with a swift slice, the ribbon comes undone and your hands are free to move. Eyes wide, you thank him, “Why? You just said-“
“I know, I know, yes, yes,” it rolls its eyes and you cough as it blows the purple fumes into your face. “I can’t help but feel pitiful for the poor souls that end up here. Far too much effort really, to survive here,” It groans, stretching. You inquire, “Well, uh thanks anyway. You…wouldn’t happen to know an exit by any chance?”
The plump caterpillar snickers, “An exit? In Wonderland? Oh dear, that’s not easy to find.” You deadpan, “So you know where it is, and the fact it does exist.” It muses grinning, “Well observed dear. Indeed, it’s in Cheshire’s Forest. On the outskirts, though, only one person’s made it that far.”
You frown, “One person?” It nods, “The others well, let’s just say Cheshire doesn’t make it easy. He knows everything about Wonderland. But no one knows anything about him.” You shiver. What an enigmatic figure…
“Though, you could say he’s the sanest of the lunatic bunch here. Oddly. After all, in a land where madness reigns, only the sane can ordain,” it utters and you blink. You think your brain has quite literally fried beyond comprehension.
“Uh, well anyway, thanks I guess. I’ll be going,” you mutter. You’d probably rest somewhere first, then try to head to the forest. The caterpillar hums quizzically regarding your retreating figure, “Follow the path where the shadows dance, and you’ll find the Mad Hatter’s chance.”
You scoff with a smirk - yeah well, you’d avoid it then. No way.
Too bad you didn’t catch the rest of the line, oh well, the caterpillar didn’t really care enough to stop you. You’d die of insanity by the Hatter’s hand or Cheshire - it didn’t matter.
“Avoid the path with all your might, and you’ll find yourself with quite the fright,” it muses, completing the line, “Oh dear, well they made it this far, I’m sure they’ll be fine.”

The first thing Hyuka was greeted with that morning when he walked into the class, was your upset, half-turned away from him face. You were absent-mindedly looking out of the window, so zoned out you didn't notice your best friend straight away. Huening took a seat beside you, the lightest pat on your shoulder letting you know about his presence. “Hey, is everything alright? You don’t look so happy today.”
“Nothing bad happened, I just, I don’t know, feel off today.” You finally turned away from the window, only to see Kai’s worried, caring gaze being directed right at you.
“How about we try to cheer you up, then? You can’t spend all day feeling like this.” He immediately offered, you not feeling your best always made him sadder, too.
“I know”, you sighed, “I don’t particularly know how to fix it, though.”
“Say no more”, with a mysterious grin, Hyuka turned away from you, but only for a second. The next thing you saw was your favorite game loading on his phone.
He always was so considerate, always knowing what your favorite book, game or food is.
You played together until the bell rang, signaling the beginning of the class. This little time helped you feel a tad bit better, just enough to get through the class without feeling absolutely miserable. Throughout the time, however, your best friend never stopped his attempts at cheering you up.
Not that he ever declined you before, but now you had all of his colorful stickers and markers at your disposal. Hyuka, himself, was just as bright as his stickers. His usual little silly jokes, now being whispered in the lowest of tones, got only funnier to hear.
Long, sometimes boring, but never with Kai by your side, classes turned into breaks and breaks turned into new classes. You hardly noticed when the school day came to an end. Finally you could get a breath and relax for a little.
“Are you free today? We could hang out for a bit,” Hyuka suggested and you were all too glad to accept the offer. Nothing sounded as good as winding down in the company of your best friend.
In the same mysterious tone of voice he so liked to use with you, Huening announced that you’re going to try a new bistro out today. Obviously the one you've never seen before and only he could show you the way to.
On your way there, Kai entertained you by blabbering about all the nonsense that could only come into his head. Once the 5th story was told and retold a few times, you finally arrived at the bistro, according to your very honest best friend - “the best ever place you could only dream to eat at”.
Well, everything you got to eat was really, really nice. Warm and delicious, what could be better after a tiring school day?
Later on, as you were walking home, chewing on your both favorite muffins, you definitely felt much happier than you did in the morning.
“See, days that start badly don’t always have to end the same way.” Kai uttered, shoving half of the muffin into his mouth. And he was right. With him, no day would ever end badly. You had no doubt your “sunshine bestie” could make any boring day far more interesting, and every bad day - much, much better.

pair: hueningkai x f! reader
warnings: drinking, reader is kind of stupid, overthinking, not proofread.. thats all, if i missed one or two lmk
genres: fluff, reader gets cute aggression because of kai, bad angst cause i don't know how to write it
Tumblr media
you and the members are doing your daily hangout on fridays, playing videogames and laugh at the one who lost, drink until nobody knows where they are or what they’re talking about.
but today, something feels off
every one is bickering as usual but kai, you couldn’t help but notice at the way he's unusually quiet. hiding his mouth with his sweaterpaws, shy, quiet responses while his cheeks are naturally colored
dear god
you couldn’t take your eyes off of him, biting your lip whenever he speaks and pinching the pillow on your lap when his bangs slightly cover his eyes. ever since you sat on this couch you had the strongest desire to hug him tightly while you squealed on how adorable he is
if you did just that, he wouldn’t be weirded out right? he would receive the hug happily and giggle along with you, you think
soobin has noticed you staring at kai for awhile now, giggling on how mesmerized you look at the sight of kai and also how obvious you are, obvious to everyone but kai himself.
he approaches you and says,
“you’re clear as a crystal you know,” you hear a deep voice next to you, it’s soobin, you stare at him like he has grown two heads “what do you mean?”
he stares at kai who’s sat in the couch playing games with beomgyu then back at you, “do you like him?”
“…what?” he shrugs, “just curious”
you scoff and playfully roll your eyes, slowly mouthing a ‘no’ before going back to the couch to sit next to kai “who’s winning?” asking the two but eyes only looking at him. kai suddenly goes silent, you furrow your eyebrows and open your mouth to voice your worry but beomgyu beats you to it. “what’s wrong huening? why are you so suddenly quiet? you were so talkative just now" red cheeks, eyes staring down at the controller in his hands, everything but you, red ears.. oh? " don’t tell me—“ beomgyu looks at you for a second, “shut up!” “oh it is, isn’t it?” he teases, smirking. “what? what’s wrong? tell me!” you whine, desperate to know what’s up so suddenly.
“nothing! beomgyu-hyung is just being annoying” kai answers, irritated
you hum, furrowing your eyebrows once again, “is he really? c’mon tell me beomgyu!” as soon as you glare at him he nonchalantly shrugs, the dimple on his cheek appearing as he was smilling too hard
“ugh i was planning to share my chips with you beomgyu but not anymore traitor”
Tumblr media
although he looked absolutely endearing when 'shy', you didn't like how quiet he is whenever you're around. he was practically ignoring you, but why? 'does he hate me now? what did i do? why is he barely speaking to me? we we're just fine 4 days ago..'
'is this the thing him and beomgyu didn't want to tell me? then why was beomgyu so chill and smilling about it?' negative thoughts ran through your mind back and forth, your heart starts to hurt.
"are you okay?" a soft, husky voice greets your ear, a whisper of an angel..
your dear friend, how could you forget he was next to you?
"i'm fine, not in the best mood" you hear a weak hum and a small, 'is that so?'
you continue watching the screen infront of you, you totally forgot you and the others were watching a movie but soon all of them fellasleep but you and kai
a finger taps your shoulder
"..would a hug from hueningie cheer you up?" he opens wide his arms while smiling softly, bangs now swept to the side, exposing his forehead, is this heaven?
the smile on his face fades seeing your hesitance, arms not as widespread as before
you feel horrible
you wrap your arms around his neck and cling to him, a sweet scent of vanilla drown your senses “..i’m sorry” he whispers into your ear, warm breath hits your cold skin, “it’s my fault right?” you nod against his shoulder, you gulp before saying “you hate me”
“no, no, you got it wrong! it’s just..” he whines and hides his face in your hair, your tummy fills up with butterflies at the action “i.. i recently figured out something, n-not something negative, well.. depends on how you take it” you feel his shaking fingers play with the ends of your hair
you stay in silence, waiting for him to speak up, you hear a shaky breath above you “i think i like you— no, i’m inlove with you, ..i, the way you make me feel, i didn’t know the exact name for it but now i do, y/n.. if you don’t feel the same way please—”
"you're not lying to me right?" kai's eyes widen "no of course not! i would never—" you take his face in your hands, closing the gap between you and him by bit, "then, would you kiss me?" he finds himself nodding uncontrollably, repeating 'yes' over and over again. "yes, yes.. would.. would you.. let me?" he stutters, you could feel the way his cheeks were burning hot, so cute, why would you say no?
"of course"
he kisses you, tangling his fingers on your hair and bringing you closer to him, he backs up for air then smashes his lips on yours
"you're so— desesperate to kiss me aren't you?" you laugh
"yes.. yes i think ive liked you for so long but i didn't realize until now” sighing he leans closer to you, foreheads kissing. “we.. are a couple now, right?” you hum and shrug after, “obviously, we just kissed”
“..good to know, question.. can we do it again?—“
"eww what the fuck! yn and kai are making out on my couch!" an annoying voice says behind you, you roll your eyes
“beomgyu!”

𐙚 WALTZ OF FOUR LEFT FEET.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— he fakes a smile as he watches you dance with somebody else.
genre: angst, strangers to friends to almost lovers to strangers again :>>
pairing: barista!kai x afab!reader
warning: none (?) lmk if i forgot anything
wordcount: 4.1k
now playing: shirebound & busking — waltz of four left feet ୨ৎ
Tumblr media
the mellow music drifts through the open door, a soft invitation into the dimly lit room. kai steps inside, his eyes scanning the crowd, seeking you out. when he finally spots you, his heart skips a beat. you wave at him with a smile that could light up the darkest night, and he waves back, though his eyes linger on you, captivated by the way you move with your date. not him. not him and his heart being hopelessly in love with you.
how did he end up here, watching from the sidelines?
Tumblr media
it was a sunny day in early spring when you first walked into the small bakeshop tucked away in a quiet corner of town. the scent of freshly baked bread and pastries wafted through the air, a comforting aroma that drew you in. you were a regular, often stopping by for a quick snack or a coffee on your way home from school.
as you approached the counter, you noticed a new face behind it. a boy with a friendly smile and dark, curly hair. he wore an apron that read “huening’s bakeshop” and seemed to be struggling to tie it properly. you couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight.
“need some help with that?” you asked, stepping up to the counter.
kai looked up, startled, and then laughed. “yeah, it’s my first day here. my dad’s making me learn the ropes. i’m kai, by the way.”
“nice to meet you, kai. i’m y/n. and don’t worry, i’m a pro at tying aprons,” you said, reaching over to help him.
as you tied the apron, you felt a strange sense of familiarity, as if you had known him for years. kai’s eyes sparkled with gratitude. “thanks, y/n. what can i get for you today?”
“i’ll have my usual—a cinnamon roll and a strawberry latte,” you replied with a smile.
kai nodded, jotting down your order. “coming right up. so, you come here often?”
“yeah, i’m a regular. best cinnamon rolls in town,” you said, glancing around the cozy shop.
kai grinned. “i’ll take that as a compliment. my dad’s been perfecting the recipe for years.”
as you sat down to enjoy your snack, you watched kai bustle around behind the counter, his movements becoming more confident with each task. you couldn’t help but notice how charming he was, and before you knew it, you had spent almost five hours in the bakeshop, nursing the same cinnamon roll and latte.
the next day, you found yourself back at the bakeshop, and the day after that, too. it wasn’t just the pastries that kept you coming back—it was kai. there was something about him that drew you in, a magnetism that you couldn’t resist.
spring break passed in a blur of lazy mornings and warm afternoons. you and kai quickly fell into a routine, spending almost every day together. on days when he ditched his shift at the bakeshop, you’d explore the town, discovering new places and sharing laughter and secrets.
one afternoon, you convinced kai to visit the newly opened arcade house just a few blocks from your house. as you entered the vibrant, neon-lit space, you felt a rush of excitement. the sounds of clinking coins and cheerful game music filled the air.
“ready to lose?” you teased, nudging kai with your elbow.
he laughed, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “you wish. i’m pretty good at these games.”
the two of you spent hours competing at various arcade games, from air hockey to racing simulators. each victory was met with playful banter, and each loss with exaggerated groans of defeat. by the end of the day, you were both carrying armfuls of tickets, grinning from ear to ear.
“let’s get something from the prize counter,” kai suggested, his eyes scanning the array of toys and trinkets.
you nodded, pointing to a stuffed bear that caught your eye. “how about that one?”
kai exchanged the tickets for the bear and handed it to you with a shy smile. “for you.”
you felt a flutter in your chest as you took the bear. “thanks, kai. this was fun.”
“yeah, it was,” he agreed, his gaze lingering on you for a moment longer than usual.
another day, kai invited you to his house, promising to make an entire cinnamon roll bread just for you. as you entered the cozy kitchen, you felt a sense of warmth and belonging. kai’s family welcomed you with open arms, and soon you were elbow-deep in flour and dough, laughing and chatting as you baked together.
“are you sure you know what you’re doing?” you teased, watching kai fumble with the dough.
he grinned, a smear of flour on his cheek. “of course! i’m a master baker.”
you rolled your eyes playfully. “we’ll see about that.”
the two of you worked together, kneading the dough and rolling it out. kai’s hands brushed against yours occasionally, sending sparks of electricity through your skin. you tried to focus on the task at hand, but it was impossible to ignore the growing connection between you.
as the cinnamon roll bread baked, filling the kitchen with its sweet aroma, kai turned to you with a soft smile. “thanks for spending spring break with me, y/n. it’s been... really great.”
you felt your cheeks warm at his words. “i’ve had a lot of fun, too, kai. more than i expected.”
he took a step closer, his gaze intense. “i’m glad. because…”
your heart skipped a beat. “kai...”
before you could say more, the timer dinged, signaling that the cinnamon roll bread was ready. kai quickly turned to the oven, his cheeks flushed. he pulled out the golden-brown loaf, setting it on the counter to cool.
“let’s eat,” he said, his voice a bit shaky.
as things continued to unfold like a dream, each day brings you and kai closer. there was a particular afternoon that stood out, one that made your heart race with an intensity you hadn't felt before. you and kai had decided to have a picnic at a nearby park, the sun casting a warm, golden glow over everything.
as you sat on the checkered blanket, enjoying the snacks you’d brought, a gentle breeze picked up, blowing a few strands of your hair across your face. kai reached out, his fingers brushing your cheek as he tucked the stray hairs behind your ear. the touch was electric, sending a shiver down your spine.
“there,” he said softly, his eyes meeting yours.
you felt your cheeks heat up, and for a moment, you both just stared at each other, the world around you fading away. kai leaned in slightly, and you felt your breath hitch, your heart pounding in your chest. but just as his lips were about to touch yours, he pulled back, a deep blush spreading across his cheeks.
“sorry,” he mumbled, looking away.
you shook your head, your voice barely above a whisper. “don’t be.”
the moment passed, but the tension between you remained. neither of you had the courage to talk about it, to define what was happening between you. instead, you continued to spend your days together, a mix of unspoken words and lingering touches.
every night, as you lay in your bed, you replayed the moments of the day in your mind. you knew this wasn’t just a friendship, and you were certain kai felt the same way. it was a comforting thought, even as it filled you with a longing you couldn’t quite name.
as the end of spring break approached, you both knew that things would change once school started again. you wondered if the magic of your time together would fade in the harsh light of reality. kai seemed to share your concerns, his usual cheerfulness tinged with a quiet uncertainty.
“so, back to school tomorrow,” you said one evening as you walked together by the beach.
kai nodded, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. “yeah. it’s going to be different.”
“do you think... things will change between us?” you asked hesitantly.
he stopped walking and turned to face you, his expression serious. “i don’t want them to. do you?”
you shook your head. “no, i don’t.”
he smiled, a small, hopeful smile that made your heart ache. “then let’s not let it. let’s keep this, whatever it is.”
“okay,” you agreed, feeling a sense of relief.
the first day back at school was a whirlwind of classes and catching up with friends. you tried to keep your promise to kai, to hold onto the special connection you’d built over the break. but then taehyun threw everything into chaos.
it was during lunch when taehyun approached you, his usual entourage nowhere in sight. he looked uncharacteristically nervous, fidgeting with the hem of his shirt.
“y/n, can we talk?” he asked, his voice unusually soft.
“sure,” you replied, curiosity piqued.
he led you to a quieter corner of the schoolyard, taking a deep breath before speaking. “i’ve been wanting to tell you this for a while now. i like you, y/n. a lot.”
you stared at him, stunned. taehyun, your rival, was confessing to you? it didn’t make sense. “taehyun, i...”
“i know this is sudden,” he continued, “and maybe you don’t feel the same way, but i had to tell you. i couldn’t keep it to myself anymore.”
you bit your lip, your mind racing. you thought of kai, of the delicate bond you were trying to nurture. telling him about this would only complicate things. “taehyun, i appreciate you telling me, but i need some time to think.”
he nodded, a flicker of disappointment in his eyes. “i understand. take all the time you need.”
you kept taehyun’s confession to yourself, unsure of how to tell kai. you didn’t want to hurt him or jeopardize what you had. but the secret weighed heavily on you, creating a rift between you and kai that neither of you acknowledged.
“everything okay?” kai asked one afternoon as you walked home together.
you forced a smile. “yeah, just a lot on my mind with school and all.”
he gave you a concerned look but didn’t press further. “if you ever need to talk, you know i’m here, right?”
“i know,” you said, feeling a pang of guilt.
the days passed in a blur of schoolwork and stolen moments with kai. you couldn’t help but notice the way taehyun watched you, his gaze filled with unspoken words. it only added to your confusion and the growing tension between you and kai.
one evening, kai invited you to the bakeshop after hours. the place was empty, save for the two of you. he had a tray of freshly baked cinnamon rolls waiting, the familiar scent filling the air.
“thought we could have a little spring break reunion,” he said with a smile, handing you a warm roll.
you took it, smiling back. “thanks, kai. this is perfect.”
as you ate, the conversation flowed easily, just like it had during spring break. but there was an underlying tension, an unspoken question hanging in the air.
“y/n,” kai said suddenly, his voice serious, “is there something you’re not telling me?”
you looked down at your hands, the guilt bubbling to the surface. “kai, i...”
before you could continue, the door to the bakeshop swung open, and taehyun walked in. he looked between you and kai, his expression unreadable.
“sorry to interrupt,” he said, his tone tense. “but i needed to talk to y/n.”
Tumblr media
the end of the school year was approaching, and with it, prom night. the excitement was palpable throughout the school, with everyone buzzing about dresses, tuxedos, and the magical evening to come. you had been quietly hoping that kai would ask you to be his date, your heart fluttering every time you saw him.
each night, you would find yourself praying for kai to make a move, to finally ask you to the spring dance. you imagined how perfect it would be, to finally have your feelings for him out in the open, to dance with him under the twinkling lights and let everything else fall away.
meanwhile, kai was struggling with his own set of emotions. he had been trying to muster the courage to ask you to prom, but each time he attempted to broach the subject, you would deftly change the topic. it wasn’t that you weren’t interested—it was just that you were terrified of revealing how you really felt. your feelings for kai were so intense and confusing that you didn’t know how to express them without risking rejection or ruining the friendship you had.
one afternoon, kai was sitting at his usual spot in the school courtyard, his gaze distant as he stared at the ground. his friends, beomgyu and kai, were chatting animatedly about their plans for prom.
“so, have you asked anyone to the dance yet?” beomgyu asked kai, nudging him playfully.
kai shook his head, his nerves on edge. “not yet. still trying to figure out the right moment.”
“come on, man. just go for it. you’ve been thinking about it for weeks,” beomgyu urged.
kai sighed, looking down at his hands. “it’s not that simple. every time i try to talk about it with y/n, she changes the subject. i don’t know if she’s interested or if she’s just avoiding the topic.”
beomgyu looked at kai with a knowing smile. “sounds like you’re overthinking it. maybe she’s waiting for you to make the first move.”
kai frowned. “but what if she’s not interested? i don’t want to make things awkward between us.”
“you won’t know until you try,” beomgyu said encouragingly. “and if you don’t ask her, you’ll never find out.”
kai nodded slowly, still unsure. the fear of rejection gnawed at him, and the last thing he wanted was to risk what little time he had left with you before graduation.
Tumblr media
two weeks before prom, you found yourself sprawled across kai's bed, the familiar comfort of his room and the soft tunes from the radio enveloping you. the scent of cinnamon rolls filled the air, and you took a bite of the sweet pastry kai had made just for you. it was a ritual you cherished, a small piece of normalcy in a sea of uncertainties.
you had been mulling over how to broach the subject of prom with kai. the subtle hints you had dropped over the past few weeks had not yielded any clear response from him. you decided to take a leap of faith, hoping that he might finally address the topic.
“kai,” you began, your voice soft but steady, “do you have any plans for the prom dance?”
kai’s demeanor shifted instantly. he sat up straighter, his eyes widening slightly. he looked at you, his expression a mix of surprise and anxiety. you could almost see the gears turning in his mind as he struggled to find the right words.
“uh, well,” he stammered, rubbing the back of his neck, “i haven’t really thought about it much. i mean, i guess... i was thinking of just going as a regular attendee.”
his hesitation was palpable, and you felt a pang of disappointment. you had hoped for a clearer answer, a sign that he was planning to ask you, but instead, his response seemed to suggest otherwise. you forced a smile, one that didn’t quite reach your eyes.
“oh,” you said, trying to keep your tone light. “because, actually, i was thinking of asking taehyun to be my partner.”
kai’s face fell as if you had slapped him. his eyes widened in shock, and for a moment, he looked as though his world had shattered. the mention of taehyun, someone he knew you had a complicated history with, seemed to hit him harder than you had anticipated.
“t-th-that’s great then,” kai said, his voice trembling slightly. “i’m sure he’ll be a good partner. i... i don’t really have any plans, so i’ll just be attending.”
his smile was strained, and the awkward silence that followed was heavy with unspoken words. the room felt smaller, the weight of kai’s unspoken feelings pressing down on both of you. you could see the hurt in his eyes, and it made your heart ache.
“i think... i should go home,” you said quietly, standing up. “it’s getting late.”
kai nodded, his expression a mix of sadness and resignation. “yeah, okay. i’ll see you around.”
you left his house with a lump in your throat, tears threatening to spill. once you were home, you collapsed into your mom’s arms, the pain of unspoken words and unrealized hopes overwhelming you. you cried softly, your teenage heart feeling as though it was breaking for the first time.
back at kai’s house, the evening had turned somber. he sat with his dad outside, the cool night air offering little solace. kai stared at the stars, his thoughts a jumble of regret and self-reproach. he had wanted to ask you to prom, but his fear and uncertainty had held him back.
“dad,” kai finally said, his voice barely above a whisper, “i messed up. i wanted to ask y/n to prom, but i couldn’t bring myself to do it. now she’s planning to go with taehyun.”
his dad, sensing the depth of kai’s pain, placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. he didn’t need to say anything—his presence and the shared silence spoke volumes. they sat together, the unspoken understanding between them a quiet testament to kai’s heartbreak.
kai’s thoughts swirled around the missed opportunity and his own cowardice. he had let his fears prevent him from expressing his true feelings, and now it felt like it was too late. the night passed in a haze of regret, kai’s heart heavy with the weight of his unspoken love and the realization of what he had lost.
Tumblr media
the days after that night seemed to stretch on endlessly, each one marked by a heavy silence between you and kai. the once-easy conversations and warm smiles had been replaced by a stilted, almost uncomfortable formality. you would exchange polite hellos if you happened to run into each other in the neighborhood, but there was an unmistakable distance between you now.
one morning, you were walking to the corner store when you saw kai coming from the opposite direction. your heart skipped a beat, hoping for some semblance of the old familiarity. you offered a tentative smile, but kai’s response was a brief nod, his eyes quickly averting to the ground. the warmth you had once felt in his presence seemed to be gone, replaced by a chill that made your chest ache.
often times, you would take a different route to avoid further awkward encounters. as you walked past kai’s house, you saw him through the window, his back to you as he worked on a new batch of cinnamon rolls. the sight of him, so absorbed in his task, stirred a pang of longing in your heart. you remembered the days when you would sit in his kitchen, laughing and talking for hours over those same cinnamon rolls. now, even seeing him from afar felt like a painful reminder of what had been lost.
the neighborhood that once felt like a comforting haven now seemed like a landscape of painful reminders. each time you encountered kai while walking to school or grabbing groceries, the air was thick with unspoken awkwardness.
it was thursday, you ran into kai at the local park. he was sitting on a bench, reading a book, and for a moment, you hesitated. you had hoped that time would heal the rift between you, but now, the distance felt insurmountable.
“hey, kai,” you said, trying to sound casual as you approached.
kai looked up from his book, his eyes meeting yours with a brief flicker of surprise. he gave a stiff smile, one that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “oh, hey. didn’t expect to see you here.”
“yeah, just needed some fresh air,” you replied, forcing a smile. “what are you reading?”
“just a novel for class,” kai said, his tone polite but distant. “it’s nothing special.”
the conversation fell flat, each of you searching for something to say but coming up empty. the shared history that had once bridged the gap between you now felt like a distant memory. kai shifted uncomfortably on the bench, his fingers fidgeting with the book’s cover.
“well,” you said, feeling the weight of the silence, “i should get going.”
“yeah, me too,” kai replied, standing up. “see you around.”
you both went your separate ways, the encounter leaving a bitter taste in your mouth. the closeness you had once shared was now replaced with an uncomfortable tension that neither of you knew how to navigate.
Tumblr media
kai stood on the edge of the crowd, his heart a mixture of bittersweet resignation and tender longing. from his vantage point, he watched you dance with taehyun, the joy in your eyes evident even from a distance. the sight of you smiling, lost in the moment, tugged at the corners of his heart.
he took a deep breath, trying to steady the emotions that threatened to overwhelm him. the music played softly in the background, a gentle reminder of the beauty of the night, even if he wasn’t part of it. the rhythmic beat and the laughter of the crowd seemed distant, as if he were in a bubble of his own making.
as he observed, kai couldn’t help but reflect on the past weeks—the missed opportunities, the unspoken words, and the painful realization of his own fear. he thought back to those afternoons spent in the park, the moments when he had wanted to tell you how he felt but had been paralyzed by the fear of rejection.
a gentle tap on his shoulder pulled him from his reverie. it was beomgyu, who had noticed kai standing apart from the festivities.
“hey, man,” beomgyu said, his voice carrying a note of concern. “you okay?”
kai forced a smile, though it didn’t fully reach his eyes. “yeah, I’m fine. just needed a moment to think.”
beomgyu studied him for a moment, then nodded. “it’s a tough night, huh? seeing someone you care about with someone else.”
“yeah,” kai said, his voice soft. “but i guess it’s part of life. not everything ends the way you want it to.”
beomgyu clapped him on the back. “you know, it’s okay to feel sad. but don’t let it keep you from moving forward. sometimes, the hardest things teach us the most.”
kai nodded, appreciating the sentiment but feeling the weight of his own emotions. “thanks, beomgyu.”
beomgyu offered a reassuring smile before wandering back into the crowd, leaving kai alone with his thoughts once more.
kai took a step back, finding a quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle of the prom. he leaned against a wall, the coolness of the brick grounding him as he watched you dance. the smile on your face was genuine, and it struck him how much you deserved to be happy, even if he wasn’t the one making you smile.
he let his gaze soften, allowing himself to embrace the melancholy of the moment. the heartache was real, a sharp pang that resonated deeply within him. but even through the pain, he found a strange sense of peace. it was as if he was finally coming to terms with the reality of the situation.
kai closed his eyes, letting the memories of your shared moments wash over him. the way you laughed at his jokes, the warmth of your presence, and the bittersweet taste of those cinnamon rolls. all of it was a testament to what had been, and what might have been, had he not been so afraid.
finally, with a deep breath, kai straightened up and looked back at the dance floor. his eyes met yours once more, and this time, he allowed a genuine smile to spread across his face. it wasn’t a smile of regret or sorrow, but one of acceptance and hope.
“you’re going to be okay,” he murmured to himself, the words feeling like a promise. “things will get better eventually. they always do.”
he turned away from the dance floor, making his way through the crowd with a newfound resolve. each step felt lighter, as if the burden of his heartache was slowly lifting. he knew that moving on wouldn’t be immediate or easy, but he also knew that healing would come in time.as kai exited the venue, he glanced back one last time, catching a fleeting glimpse of you laughing with taehyun. it was a moment of closure, a final acknowledgment of what had been and what could never be.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
two slow dancers.
pairing: huening kai x gn!reader.
genre: strangers to friends to lovers, fluff, angst.
warnings: death, grieving, crying, acceptance.
summary: inspired by the movie, “20th Century Girl”: while trying to help your friend get a boy she likes, you meet your own love… a love you thought would last forever.
author’s note (please read): as the cancer season comes to an end, the leo season begins. not only my month starts but also huening’s so, i’ve decided to start this month with a special treat! it’s taken a lot out of me to write about things like this especially with the fact that i once lost someone who was very important to me and a huge factor in my life. but over time, i’ve learned that it’s okay to grieve and it’s definitely okay to not be okay. i hope you enjoy this fic. ♥︎
Tumblr media
with strangers, friendship can grow. or the stranger can be a total jerk, let’s hope that’s not the case.
“y/n, pleeeeaaaseee!” your friend chae begs. you roll your eyes as you remember what she’s begging you for. she’s begging you to help her with her crush. you being you, you’re thinking of all the worst outcomes of this. you can probably mess up by accidentally walking up to the guy and he automatically shuts you down. or, you can just walk up to the wrong guy!
anywho, you agree. much to her surprise, actually. she was expecting you to say no, knowing how you are but instead of questioning it, she just cheers happily. you watch her cheer with a laugh and say, “okay, okay. where is he?”
she points over at him, making you look in the direction of where she’s directing you to and see two boys. as far as you know, their names are taehyun and huening kai. you were about to ask her which one but she tells you taehyun before you can even utter the words.
you know very few things about taehyun. one thing is that he prioritizes his studies over everything else. another thing is that, you rarely see him with anyone besides the boy with him at the moment. that’s all you know.
with no information besides what you already know, you decide to just go for it. you begin walking over to the two boys, seeing that they’re talking with each other and laughing amongst themselves.
finally reaching them, you look back to make sure that chae is still standing and for your sake, she still is. you clear your throat quietly as the two boys look at you with smiles and say hi, wondering why you’re there.
“hi! ummm, taehyun, right?” you ask, watching as he nods in response. you give him at tight lipped smile as you begin to tell him that your friend has taken a liking to him and that she’d like to try and get to know him, something along those lines.
both him and huening kai share a quick look before huening shrugs and smiles softly. taehyun agrees kindly and asks where your friend is so he can go over to her. you point over to her, seeing that she’s now seated at a table on her phone. he waves bye to huening kai and begins walking over with a warm smile.
you and huening watch as they begin talking and smile in happiness. “he’s never accepted a girl’s advances before,” you hear from behind you. you look back, seeing huening kai watch the two of them from afar, with a sappy smile on his face.
much to your surprise, you reciprocate his smile. not because of them but because of him. his smile is making you smile. his gummy smile is so cute, you think to yourself. you’re so in your thoughts that you don’t even realize that he’s staring back at you while his smile unconsciously widens.
you’re both admiring something about each other as you finally realize how long you’ve been staring and finally think about how creepy you look.
huening looks away as well, his smile not leaving but his stare fleeting. he musters up the courage to ask you, scared to ask you at first. “would you like to be friends, uhhh-” he pauses, realizing he doesn’t know your name. “y/n.” you say, you would ask his name but you already know it due to your friend’s infatuation with his best friend. “ah, y/n, would you like to be friends?” he asks again, this time with your name coming first.
“i’d love to be.”
—
with friendship, love can grow. romantically, platonically, love comes in every form and or shape.
with huening kai, it just so happened to be romantically. you’re not sure if he feels the same but what you are sure of is that he’s all you think about.
his beautiful smile, bringing such warmth to anyone who comes into contact with him. his way with words, he really knows how to make anyone feel loved by him. his perfect personality, the lovely mixture of funny, charm and kindness. he has all the assets of a great partner.
much to your disappointment, he’s brought up the fact that he has a crush on someone. you couldn’t possibly guess who as he doesn’t really interact with anyone besides you, taehyun and shockingly, chae.
not thinking too much of it, you finally bring yourself back down to earth and tune into the environment. you’re surrounded by tons of people filled with joy, excited to get on the rides. on the right of you, there’s chae. she seems to be getting impatient as she taps her foot every chance she gets and rolls her eyes at how long the line is. to the left of you, you have huening kai and taehyun, who’s now chae’s boyfriend.
taehyun taps you on the shoulder and asks if he could talk to chae, which you mindlessly agree to. now you’re next to kai, who’s immediately smiling from the sight of you. “you excited?” he asks, words filled with childlike energy.
you smile at him, “yeah, are you?” he half heartedly smiles at you, nodding his head with quickness. “yeah… totally excited…!” he says quickly before looking away. you’re caught off guard by his sudden change in attitude towards the ride and your eyes squint in confusion.
at the time, you would’ve thought he just didn’t want to get on the ride. but he did. he wanted to get on the ride, it was just that… he was scared of rollercoasters.
“kai, are you scared of roller coasters?” you question, causing him to whip his head in your direction. he looks around, trying to come up with an answer that won’t give away his obvious fear.
“of course not! it was just that slushy i had a while ago, i’m still a little shaky from it,” he says, trying to play it off with a nervous chuckle but you can see right through him.
you decide to brush it off yet, you can’t help but pity him. you don’t want him to feel forced to get on the ride because everyone else is, but if he wants to get on then so be it. chae and taehyun are hand in hand as the line moves quickly, you all now reaching the seats. the two in front of you rush to the back seats as you and huening are left with no option but to sit all the way in the front.
based on how everyone on the line avoided the front of the line, you’re guessing that this ride is no joke. you watch as huening fills with fear and you start feeling bad for him once again as he seats himself on the right side of the ride. you seat yourself next to him, waiting for the worker to come and strap you both in.
“kai, are you sure you’re gonna be okay?” you ask, placing a hand on his thigh to give him some type of comfort. he grabs your hand tightly and simply says, “yeah.” before the worker comes around to you two and buckles you both in, giving the person at the start button a thumbs up and motioning everybody else to do so.
you raise your thumb up with eagerness and watch as huening raises his up slowly with his eyes closed tightly. you feel him grip at your hand tighter as the ride begins moving, showing a huge raise in the air as it prepares for the drop.
as the ride makes its way up, you hear huening gasp quickly. you look over at him, seeing if he’s okay before he starts saying, “y/n, if i die! i just want you to know! i’ve had a huge crush on you since day one! i always thought you were so nice and sweet and pretty cool! your smile! your laugh! your eyes! your heart! everything! i always talked to taehyun about it to the point that he would get tired of it and tell me to try speaking to you! i’ve really been your biggest fan and i hope that we could possibly end up together one day!”
you look at him with widened eyes as the ride begins to drop, watching him scream in terror while still having his eyes closed. you watch your hair fling back and forth as the ride blades through the wind, thinking about everything huening just said.
so, he did like you back.
—
with love, comes pain. unthinkable pain, pain that can be absolutely unbearable at times.
he’s going back to hawai’i. and he’s not coming back, is what he told you. at the time, you were filled with so much shock and anger that you didn’t even respond to him when he told you. you left him conflicted. he even considered staying for you, no matter how much his parents and siblings needed him back home.
you called him all types of names to chae, you told her that he was a terrible boyfriend, a horrible person and you told her that you hated him.
now here you are, running to the bus station hoping to catch him before he leaves. you’re running as fast as you can, running and bumping into everyone while trying to get there as fast as you can. trying to get to him.
as you run, your bag catches onto something and you struggle with it before finally getting it off of whatever it got stuck to. continuing with your pursuit, you try to remember the bus that was set to take the passengers on board to the boat for hawai’i. filled with fear at the fact that you might not make it, you start asking people if they know where that bus terminal might be. a lot of no’s are said and you feel a pit in your stomach.
you just want to see him one last time.
you go up to one more person, asking if they know where the bus might be. you’re met with a tall man, a man who’s about huening kai’s height, seems to have the same hair color and the same body type.
completely out of breath from all the running you did, you politely tap the man on the shoulder and ask him, panting in between each word.
“yeah! that’s the bus i’m heading for right no- y/n?” the man above you asks. your eyes widen as you look up to be met with a familiar face.
him.
“wha… what are you doing here?” he asks, clearly shocked to see you here. you continue panting as you reach for his hand, tears soon building up in your eyes.
“i’m sorry—for everything i didn’t say. i didn’t say anything when i should’ve told you that i loved you and i’m fine with long distance, i should’ve told you to be there for your family and do what you have to do. i should’ve told you that no matter how many hours away you are, my love for you will never change. ’m sorry for not saying that, kai.”
you finish as huening looks at you with a small smile, tapping your hand with his finger. as you look up, he catches your lips and kisses you with so much love and affection, like he’s been waiting to do this.
you waste no time kissing him back, embracing his torso with your arms as he holds your face in his large palms, deepening the kiss without any effort. a bus rushes past the both of you, causing both of your hair to flail in the air as if you were in a movie.
he slowly pulls his lips away from yours, connecting the both of your foreheads. he rubs your cheek with his eyes closed as he inhales deeply, breathing in your scent one last time.
he opens his eyes and he’s met with you looking up at him with tears in your eyes. his eyes begin to water as well as it finally dawns on him that this is actually the last time he’ll see you in person.
not even six months into your relationship and he’s already leaving you. he feels terrible but he can’t do anything about it, his family needs him back home and he can’t stay no matter how desperately he wants to. he dreamt of a future with you in it, you’re the only person he thinks about 24/7.
he chuckles sadly as you say, “promise me you’ll call when you can, please,” his smile fades away slowly as he nods his head. as he’s about to kiss you again, the terminal announcer calls for all passengers boarding for hawai’i.
he pulls from you quietly, picking up his bags before kissing you on the forehead softly as his bus pulls into the station.
you begin sobbing profusely as he takes his final steps away from you, watching as he begins crying as well with his head down. you’re both ugly crying and watching him board the bus doesn’t help but you can’t look away.
he steps onto the bus before turning around and mouthing the words, “i love you” before the door closes on him and the bus begins moving. you run with the vehicle, saying the words, “i love you more” way more than he said it.
your legs finally give out on you and you drop to your knees, with your head lowered toward the ground as you cry into the sad air. but you remember his promise:
he’ll call.
—
with distance, comes longing. longing to be in your partner’s arms, within the arms reach of them. longing for them.
it’s been almost 7 months since he’s left for hawai’i, and he’s called every other up until now. it’s been a month since he’s last called you and at this point, you’re thinking this was his way of breaking up with you.
you walk over to the call boxes as usual when you’re about to call him and you put in a few coins and type in the number he gave you. you wait a few seconds, hearing the phone ring and then say, “the number you have reached is not in service. please check the number and dial again.” you’re filled with so much rage and frustration that you don’t even hang up, you just start yelling into the phone.
“i’m gonna get over you for real now! not gonna wait anymore! it’s better to just think you’re dead,” you say, sobbing and sniffing softly, “and don’t call me later— that won’t work! you don’t have anymore chances!” you cry into the phone, “and i don’t miss you anymore— so have a nice life, you ungrateful bastard!” you add, dropping the phone, not even bothering to put it back on the dial.
you walk out of the box, sobbing into the sleeves of your shirt as you make your way back to your school campus.
—
2 YEARS LATER.
with loss, comes grievance. take the time to grieve for the things you have lost, or even the people you’ve lost.
as you walk into your old home, you get filled with nostalgia from the past, good and some bad. you look around and see a box with a card, reading, “to y/n l/n.”
you open it and read the containments, “come visit us, 9am ~ 6pm.” with a location at the top. seeing that it has your name you think nothing of it, you’re just confused.
pushing all of that aside, you decide to visit the location but you proceed with caution.
you drive to the location and you’re met with a place that holds viewings. viewings for those who’ve passed and some viewing held for art shows.
you read the card once again and go to the viewing it directs you to, as you enter the space you’re met with a screen showing a beautiful blossom tree. you smile in awe at how beautiful it is before looking over at the singular bench sitting under the tree.
there’s words on the bench, the words read,
“the eternal spring; remembering kai kamal huening (2002-2023).”
before you can get caught up in your head, you hear footsteps coming from the left side of you. you whip your head to the direction of the steps and you’re met with taehyun.
he stares at you for a while, seeing how much you’ve changed and slowly walks over to a bench in front of the screen. he motions to the seat next to him, asking you to sit down. as you walk over to him, he begins speaking.
“while i was moving away, i found a package that huening had hid. that was a while ago, probably even before he passed… i was surprised that he had hidden this, y’know but, it’s obvious that it was special.” he pauses for a second, allowing you to take in everything that he’s saying.
“i felt the need to send it. so, i decided to contact you and even go as far as to arrange this viewing. i’m sorry if it made you uncomfortable or upset but i didn’t know what else to do, y/n.”
“it’s fine, thank you actually. i would’ve still been… angry. i would’ve been forever, if i didn’t know.” you say, staring at the floor as you speak. you hear him huff, wiping a hand through his hair.
“i was actually… upset with you for a moment.” he says, catching you off guard, you look over at him. “i was scared he’d… come back here for you.” he adds.
much to your surprise, you hear him laugh quietly.
“i was looking through the things he had filmed and that’s when i realized, you’re the person he truly wanted. and i felt the need to tell you just how alive— how alive he felt when he was with you, y/n. and how much he truly loved you.”
he says, leaving you heartbroken. you softly sniffle as he continues, “what i realized, while watching it— the film—that the happiest moments in his short lifetime, were when he was with you. you mattered to him.” he pauses, looking over at you. “so i want to thank you, for being there and for remembering him.”
you smile half heartedly, chuckling sadly, “how could i… ever— forget kai?” you say, smiling softly at taehyun as he mirrors your smile. he hands you a tape, before taking his leave and walking out to his car.
you follow suite and head back to your car as well, heading home to play the tape.
as you make it home, you take off your shoes at the door and walk to your room. looking in your closet for your vcr player, you grab it and blow it. watching years of collected dust fly off of it, you plug it in and set it up under your tv.
you pop in the tape, nowhere near ready for what’s about to come.
as the tape begins playing, you see taehyun singing and playing the piano. you smile at the memory and keep your eyes on the screen as you pop into the camera. it’s a video of you plucking flowers from the ground as huening records, his soft laughter filling the background of the video. you watch as the tape continues playing with different videos of you, that he recorded. videos of you dancing, playing around with him and recording the morning announcements from high school as his warm laughter and giggles fill the air of the video.
the tape cuts to static, causing you to have an internal panic as you believe your vcr’s stopped working, but no. the static cuts to a video of huening kai walking through tall grass and flowers as he hovers above it. he lets his hands cut through the flowers as the video cuts to his face, cutting to him adjusting the camera with a smile as he begins talking.
“good morning. it’s probably the new year! i got out of bed really early to show you this, it’s probably really late there. just wait for me a bit longer, i’ll come see you soon, y/n. it’ll be fun, in the new year— with you.” he finishes, smiling into the camera. you watch him say with a sad smile, knowing that he didn’t even make it to the new year. you know he would’ve loved to see you, in person.
—
with death, comes denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally, acceptance.
acceptance is the most important part. you accept that ever after all that they’ve been through, they’re no longer in pain or suffering like they used to. you learn to accept that they’re better and it’s okay to miss them at times. they’re still with you, maybe not physically but they’re in your heart. forever.
it’s time to accept that he’s gone.
it’s okay.
