The Right Way to Set Up a Reward System for Kids

If you want to help your child to reach behavioral milestones (and tame a few tantrums on the way), you can try a tactic that many parents swear by: reward systems. They encourage behavioral modification through positive reinforcement.

“Stressing positive behavior helps build self-esteem," says Katarzyna Bisaga, M.D., Ph.D., a child and adolescent psychiatrist and assistant clinical professor in Columbia University's Division of Child Psychiatry in New York City. "The thinking is that once a child develops one positive behavior and gets a lot of praise, then he'll be more likely to cooperate in other situations too."

Here’s an example of how it works: When Dr. Bisaga’s son Marcin was 7 years old, she struggled to get him ready for school in the morning. Rather than dwelling on the negative aspects of his foot-dragging, she stressed the positives, made her expectations clear, and implemented a point reward system for kids.

"In the morning Marcin got points for getting dressed by a certain time, brushing his teeth, and eating his breakfast," she says. "When he came home from school, there were points for putting his coat and shoes away and for washing his hands. At night there were points for taking a bath and brushing his teeth." At the end of the week, the results were tallied and he earned 10 cents for every three points. Marcin would look forward to buying trading cards and small toys with his loot.

Want to implement a similar reward system in your house? The key is customizing it based on your child’s age, personality, and interests. Here’s how to set up a reward system that works for your kid.

Creating Reward Systems for Toddlers and Preschoolers

For little kids, consider using a sticker reward chart. The instructions are simple: Put one sticker on the chart each time your child accomplishes a goal. Some parents also give out rewards for certain milestones. (For example, she can get one sticker each time she dresses herself. Ten stickers earns a small toy or new book). Printable reward charts are readily available online, and you can also make your own DIY version.

Also note that you don’t need to work with stickers. Reward charts can take many forms: dimes in a jar, magnets on the fridge, child-friendly apps, tallied points—anything that’ll motivate your child to behave accordingly! Just remember that most little kids do best with a bit of visual representation.

Here are some tips for using a reward chart for toddlers and preschoolers.

Reward your toddler or preschooler right away. To eliminate confusion, stickers should be given immediately after the desired behavior occurs, says Dr. Bisaga. Otherwise your kid might forget what they’re being rewarded for.

Track only one behavior. When you first start a reward system, only track one behavior at a time. Your toddler or preschooler can get stickers for using the toilet, getting dressed, saying “thank you,” not whining, etc. Once a specific behavior is no longer a problem, Dr. Bisaga says you can target another, always making sure your goals are realistic and age-appropriate.

Give plenty of praise. Toddlers and preschoolers love pleasing their parents. Give your child lots of praise when she accomplishes a goal, and she’ll be encouraged to keep up the good work. Also remind her about the reward chart often (“Remember if you go potty on the toilet, you’ll get a sticker!”)

Use simple wording. With toddlers and preschoolers, you need to speak with easy-to-understand terms. Instead of rewarding your child for “showing gratitude for acts of service,” you’re rewarding her for “saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’”

Don’t bribe. Even if you’re desperate to get your child to behave in public, you shouldn’t use a reward system as a bribe. Your child might start acting out on purpose, knowing that a reward awaits when she stops.

Creating Reward Systems for Kids at Home

For school-aged kids, a reward system usually deals with points instead of stickers. But tracking points alone won’t motivate them to change their behavior, so parents need to encourage them with larger incentives. For example, kids can trade in 20 points for a trip to the playground, a later bedtime, an extra half hour of video games, or small amounts of money. Remember the tactic of Dr. Bisaga, who gave her son 10 cents for every three points earned (which he subsequently spent on small toys!) Here are some tips for success with a point reward system for kids.

Track multiple behaviors. As your kids age, you can implement more items in the reward chart. Your child might earn points for making his bed, controlling his anger, helping with laundry, walking the dog, and being nice to siblings.

Consider removing points. Parents can decide on the dynamics of their chart, but some choose to remove points for bad behavior. If this happens, clearly explain the reasoning to your child.

Add time sensitivity. Does your kid have a knack for procrastination? Then add a time sensitivity element to your reward system! Maybe your kid must make his bed before 10 a.m. to receive points, or he needs to complete all chores before dinner.

Get your kids involved. Talk to your child to brainstorm accessible rewards that will motivate him. He might not care about getting a new book if he already has shelves full of unread ones—but maybe he’s longing for a family bike ride to the new ice cream shop!

Don’t stray from the system. Reward charts clearly state what is expected of your child, but they only work as long as you keep at it. "Even simple star charts require a lot of energy, effort, and time," says Dr. Bisaga. "You need to be on top of your kids and monitor what they're doing and how they're doing it." Play in the first year of life is all about exploration. Babies use their five senses to learn about the interesting new world around them: Does an object feel hard or soft? Sticky or rough? What does it do if I drop it? Or put it in my mouth? Most play consists of “tasting” or mouthing an object and shaking, banging, or dropping it.

When your baby develops new motor skills, play becomes more coordinated and complex. For example:

At about 4 months old, babies begin to reach for and grasp objects, like a rattle.

By 6 or 7 months, they can transfer that rattle between hands.

At around 9 months, a newly developed pincer grasp makes it easier for babies to pick up smaller objects, like blocks and other small age-appropriate toys.

During this time, play is usually a solitary activity, but playing side-by-side with other babies and imitating activities is common by year’s end.

Big Kids: How They Play

Elementary school-age kids are accomplished in ways they never were before. They’ve grasped an understanding of the world around them and are now moving toward mastering skills that once challenged them, like catching a football or braiding a friend’s hair.

This also is the time where talents and interests take hold — a 4-year-old who enjoyed story time may grow to love reading; a 5-year-old who listened to music might want to play piano.

Physical abilities, like large and fine motor skills, are being refined. Children learn to ride two-wheel bicycles and glide on skateboards. Arts and crafts become more intricate, and a child might spend hours weaving friendship bracelets or drawing comic strips.

Peer relationships take on more importance, and your child might be more interested in playing with classmates than with you. But remember that even as your child matures, you are still the most important playmate — so try to carve out some one-on-one time. Family game nights are one way to get everyone together.

And when you sit side-by-side with your kids and paint, color, or read a story, you give them the attention they need to build their self-esteem and feel loved and secure.

Playing with cars may aid your child’s emotional and physical development. Here’s how

Whether they’re our own kids, or those of friends and family, many of us don’t pause to consider the role of play in children’s lives. We just take it for granted that they spend spare moments pushing toy trucks around or pretending to be dragons (or sometimes both) and while it’s fun (definitely for them, and sometimes for us) don’t assign it much significance beyond that.

But according to Professor Jeffrey Goldstein, a child psychologist at the University of Utrecht and co-editor of Toys and Communication (2017), there is something of fundamental importance going on when children play. “There is no other activity that develops their language, spatial awareness, social and communication skills and physical abilities in such a prolonged way,” he says. “This is thanks to all sorts of factors, such as the interaction that takes place when children play together, the creativity of make-believe, and the intellectual development that comes from learning the names of objects, and then imagining them to be something completely different.”

Another crucial feature of play is the development of motor skills, and Prof Goldstein says toys that move are especially helpful here: “Pushing a toy car around is a good example of developing physical skills through play.” Also, all children like variety in their play, and car-related toys offer this in spades, with the chance to play with different models, or imagine different scenarios (whether that’s a race, a crash or a trip to the garage). “Variety sustains children’s interest, and helps them develop a broader range of skills.”

That is certainly the view of Connel Boyle, headmaster of Neroche Community Primary School in Somerset, which is rated as outstanding by Ofsted. “We have invested heavily in training our staff in play theory,” he reports. “We have also installed a Scrapstore [a shed full of junk items] that pupils can use to create anything their imaginations conjure.” Mr Boyle reports that children come time and again to play in the Scrapstore, always playing different games. “We see new constructions every day, and children of different genders and ages mix happily together.” In this way, playing enhances children’s social skills because they learn how to co-operate with each other, make compromises, and unite around a common purpose.

On an even more nuanced level, play also helps kids develop their emotional intelligence, according to author and academic Harriet Castor. She has researched play for her novels, including the critically acclaimed VIII (2011), and for her teaching at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

“A key feature of play is that, by doing it, children enter into other worlds with a focus that is rare among adults,” she observes. “For example, when they play with a toy car or draw a picture of a vehicle, they try out a different role – the car itself, say, or the driver. They learn empathy, as well as developing the habit of creative thinking.” One person who fully grasps the potential of play to shape children’s lives is David Warrington, design manager for the Early Learning Centre. He says the company is ever mindful of the interaction between play and children’s development. “As a child grows, their relationship and understanding of the world becomes more complex,” he says. “We try to develop toys that support this, and provide age-appropriate stretch and stimulation.’’

Of their car- and vehicle-based toys and accessories, Mr Warrington says: “We have a range of simpler toys aimed at 12 months plus with an emphasis on gravity-fed play and early motor skills development. As a child gets older, other ranges required greater dexterity, and offer slightly more sophisticated play, such as role play, themed play, and social play.”

For all that, Mr Warrington and his colleagues don’t forget the most important aspect of play. “We always put fun at the forefront of our designs, using features such as sound effects, or relating them to fairy tales that children are familiar with,” he says. “If a product is fundamentally fun, a child will be drawn to it and spend longer playing with it.” Even better, they’ll gain the many developmental benefits that come with every careering car or beeping truck – even the ones being driven by dragons.
