The Wage Gap in Basketball

This blog will highlight The conversation around the gender pay disparity in basketball. The gender wage gap is still a prominent issue in today’s society, it is found throughout various different career fields in the world, sports is no exception. In the United States, there is a gap of 0.78 cents between female and male workers (Stevenson, 2015), WNBA player have it even worse. WNBA players are paid 33 percent of the official league revenue, whereas NBA players are paid 50 percent of it (Berri, 2015). In fact the American Association of university women predicts the wage gap will continue up until 2119. Now one might ask why is there such a gap? Well the biggest reason for this is that the NBA raises more revenue WNBA. Half of the W.N.B.A.’s teams loses money, while benefiting from the revenue generated by the N.B.A.’s national television and sponsorship deals (Sandomir, 2016). Adam Silver NBA Commissioner says “The tickets are very inexpensive, but even at low prices were not selling enough tickets to run a viable business”. Others might say that WNBA is still young  and needs more time to fully see its capability, as it was founded in 1996 which is 50 years after the nba was founded in 1946. In 2015 - 2016 season W.N.B.A. has an average attendance of 7,318 a game exceeded the 6,749 at the same period of the N.B.A.’s development in the mid-1960s (Sandomir, 2016). However this is not a fair comparison towards the N.B.A. since it doesn’t have a  successful league as its parent, as the W.N.B.A. have with the N.B.A.

Although most WNBA players understand they are not getting paid like nba players they still feel they should get more as WNBA players get 25% of the revenue as opposed to 50% like nba players are getting.
