at 4:26pm, the ground began to shake.

many people feared that it was another earthquake, but instead, the crack down the center of main street exploded.

water shot out, twenty feet high, raining down on those gathered for the festival. the liquid sizzled upon contact, burning skin, not enough to kill or eat through, but enough to leave a red stinging mark. people scrambled for cover as the water continued to bubble up, covering the town streets like waves washing up onto shore before sliding back into the crack, only to bubble up again.

this continued for fifteen minutes, and the flooding continued from the amount of water that moved through town. those not quick enough to get to higher ground were sucked back toward the crack at alarming speeds in the retreating current. one such unfortunate individual was Andrew Richardson. the water pulled him down into the crack before anyone could grab him, and he did not resurface.

once the geyser finally stopped, the sucking stopped as well, and the standing water in the first floors and basements of various businesses and homes along the four roads of main street remained, three feet deep.

the sun was setting. there wasn't enough time to wade through the burning liquid to get home. communication throughout the town via telephone and walkie talkie recommended everyone shelter in place until the morning, when the water would hopefully have retreated into the crack or the town workers could find a way to drain the liquid.

the only homes left untouched were the ones far off the beaten path, including the Commune.

((the next morning, the water will be 2.5 feet deep. you can use a height comparison chart to see where that will land on your various characters. getting home will be difficult but not impossible. the water burns but does not eat through skin so it is survivable, it just hurts and skin that contacts will be red for a while. water damage has been done to every building on main street, which includes most if not all the businesses, including all of the vendor booths.
