i feel like i’ve only seen like two posts talking about exactly why blackpink’s use of desi and middle eastern cultures is exoticism so let me teach you a few things as someone who was born in and lived several years in the middle east, is indian and hindu, and has studied music and exoticism at university. please read the whole thing and educate yourself.

exoticism is the act of drawing on aspects of cultures other than one’s own and using them to portray an image through the lens of someone who is not part of that culture, thereby reducing it to a mere aesthetic or style. this is harmful because it makes those cultures seem trivial, disregards their history, and makes them seem inferior as they are being represesented as being “other”, something foreign and mysterious. unfortunately, desi, arab, and persian cultures have long been subject to this, such as in literally every single aladdin movie, and - especially for desi culture - multiple times in kpop.

when it comes to music, the phrygian dominant scale is a music scale that is used in traditional music from many parts of asia and eastern europe, including india and the middle east. hylt uses this scale to imitate that same kind of sound. while this is not inherently exoticism, the context most definitely is. looking at the music video, this scale is most prominently used in the bazaar scene and it is clear that it’s trying to portray some kind of “far-away” “exotic” and “mysterious” aesthetic. it’s trying to seem “different”, and this is exactly what that concept of the other is. this would not have been as much of a problem if they had chosen one culture and represented it accurately. but instead, the set designers cherry-picked random elements of south asian and middle eastern cultures and put them all together to create some kind of “exotic” backdrop for this part of the song.

not only is there a bazaar clearly inspired by those found in the middle east, there is a ganesha idol on the ground (who is a hindu god, and clearly being disrespected by his placement on the floor), right next to an oil lamp (which is middle eastern), a sitar leaning against the wall (a traditional indian instrument), and a toran hanging on the wall (a hindu decorative door hanging).

this mixing up of elements of different cultures is just blatant exoticism and shows a complete lack of care or respect to accurately portray them beyond a mere aesthetic. those of you who are calling us antis for speaking up about this need to realise that this issue goes way beyond you and your kpop mv getting views. this is our culture, our religion, our identity, and we are so fucking tired of seeing it relentlessly exoticised. our cultures are not props. pls respect us.

As much as I love y/n, I also loved my two friends.

She didn't really enjoyed Taehyung, she liked Jimin better. I guess, it's because Taehyung is as stubborn as a mule. You see, that night they both came over for dinner with us, y/n had a lot of fun. I wish to see her smile more often. Jimin was easy but Taehyung was as stubborn as a mule. As the cook, I turned on the humongous oven and put the pans in. I cleaned the mess created because I know how orderly y/n can be and I wouldn't want to do anything to upset her. The hands of the clock seemed to move more leisurely than before and the thought of her starving and sad made me very agitated. Then suddenly it dinged, just when I was inattentive. I took out the food carefully and waited for it to cool off. I served it on a silver platter seasoned with herbs and two slices of lemon, just how she likes it. The second the metal touched the blue cotton cloth that covered the whole dining table, she began devouring it. The sounds of the silverware scraping against each other and the occasional moans of delight made satisfaction fill my body to the brim. She abruptly stopped and pushed her plate with her fork in my direction. Sure, I hadn't ate anything yet but her taste in meals just wasn't my preference. Still, I would never say no to such an innocent request, her doe eyes gets me everytime. Hmmm. Now I see... I didn't enjoy taehyung, I liked Jimin better. Maybe it's the saltiness he carried in his heart, was never really accepting of y/n for who she is but then again, maybe he's just a little overcooked and I'm wrong for thinking that one's own character make them taste the way they do. I think not since Jimin was sweet as always but I think the syrup helped a lot too. Now I see why y/n preferred Jimin over Taehyung.

As much as I loved my two friends, I love my y/n.
