What are the uses of hydraulic cylinder?
The basic use of a hydraulic cylinder is to create a force in a linear motion. This mechanical force can be used for a variety of applications such as lifting a power arm or driving down a plate on a power press.
Hydraulic cylinders are used in stationary or mobile applications where a large amount of force is required.
Some of the more common uses are
Earth moving equipment
The buckets of digging equipment and the blade of a bulldozer and grader are lifted by the use of a hydraulic cylinder
Bob cats use hydraulics to power their wheels and hydraulic cylinders to lift their buckets
Mining Equipment
A large amount of mining equipment is powered by hydraulic cylinders as the atmosphere around a mine site can be too dangerous internal combustion petrol engines or electrical applications that cause sparks or arching.
Because of the incredible amounts of pressure and force that can be released when using hydraulic cylinders they are used in many mining applications for recovering ore to transporting and refining it
Mobile Machinery Industry
Because hydraulic cylinders are able to lift, push and pull loads of every conceivable description the mobile machinery industry rely almost exclusively on them to provide most of its linear motion
The industrial machinery industry also relies heavily on hydraulic cylinders for use in presses, injection molding, metal forging and compactors. They are also used in the manufacturing industry for similar applications
Garbage Trucks and Refuse Compactors
The compactor in the back of the local garbage truck uses a hydraulic cylinder to power the compactor and at recycling centers all around the world different types of rubbish including plastics, metal even car bodies are compacted  for easy storage and transportation to the places where they can be recycled once again with the use of hydraulic cylinders
Tunnel boring Equipment
The massive tunnels that are now being made to deal with traffic congestion and open new areas are done with the aid of hydraulic cylinders. Tunnels under rivers, through mountains for high ways, railways and to divert rivers and power, hydroelectric power plants all rely on the use of hydraulic cylinders
The Fishing Industry
Fishing boats, trawlers and long liners all use hydraulic cylinders to power or lift their gear and equipment
Advanced Applications
Flight simulators and other training units for the space industry and military rely on hydraulic cylinders for movement as do many types of dentists chairs and medical machinery that requires very precisely controlled and even pressure
It is obvious that today’s world relies heavily on the modern hydraulic cylinder design because of its ability to exert a massive amount of force upon any object that in placed in a mechanical device designed to harness that energy.
Without the advances in hydraulic cylinder design many things today, such as the way the emergency brakes on large vehicles and heavy equipment can quickly stop them could not happen. The force used in the “jaws of life equipment” used in rescue operations to cut away damaged car bodies to free trapped victims of accidents and advances in robotics are all revolved around the usef hydraulic cylinders.

5 uses of Hydraulic Motors
Hydraulic motors can be found powering hydraulic systems for many mechanical aspects of everyday life. They can be used in any application that requires some form of rotational force or torque. Hydraulic motors push pistons, vanes or gears to convert hydrostatic energy into mechanical energy. The overall power capacity of any hydraulic motor must be dictated by the speed it rotates and its displacement.
Five common uses for hydraulic motors
Industrial applications
Hydraulic motors are often used in industrial applications where electricity is not appropriate, coupled with their resistance to environmental extremes including being submerged, in high heat, extreme cold or dusty areas make them the perfect solution. They are commonly used to power rolling mills, augers, mixer and conveyors. Hydraulic motors can be large enough to power injection molding machines or small enough to power jewelers or dentists high speed drills
Mobile Machinery
Most off highway mobile equipment uses hydraulic motors for their primary drives. Equipment such as loaders, graders, backhoes, cranes, bulldozers, excavators drill rigs and bridge layers all use hydraulic wheel motors because of its exceptional reliability and versatility.
Because hydraulic motors are able to deliver earth-moving power or torque in small systems they are often favored over internal combustion motors. They can also be used in hydraulic/hybrid drive systems as the hydraulic motor can be used to absorb energy coming from drive wheels and redistribute the energy for increased performance
Hydraulic Motors in businesses
Dentist and barbers chairs are often operated using small hydraulic motors
Fuel stations often use hydraulic systems to move volatile fuels as there are no electrics involved reducing the risks of sparks and fires
Many forms of transport use hydraulic motors such as airplanes to operate their control panels, flaps and landing gear.
Auto repair shops use hydraulic motors to raise and lower ramps and car hoists
Some types of elevators use hydraulic motors to raise and lower them as well as power their emergency stopping systems
Snow plows and road graders use hydraulic power to control the clearing blades
Many types of food manufacturing processes us hydraulic motors to power their different systems such as conveyor belts, lifting and flipping equipment as well as weighting and packaging operations
Much of the equipment in modern hospitals is operated using hydraulic motors as it provides smooth and efficient operation of delicate equipment
In the Home
Many types of dishwashers now use hydraulics to increase the water pressure as well as to ensure they operated at lower noise levels
Entertainment
Rides at amusement parks and fairs mainly use hydraulic motors to power and control the motion of the rides such as Ferris wheels and roller coaster because they allow for a much smoother and safer ride than either electrical or mechanical devices. It’s also much quicker when the equipment needs to be assembled or relocated in traveling road shows.
Many live theaters use hydraulic powered stages and props to make it easier to raise and lower stages and move props around during performances
Modern hydraulic motors can be found in a wide variety of applications in the home, businesses, industrial and agricultural industries as well as for powering heavy duty outdoor equipment and transportation such as aircraft, ships and trains.

5 Signs That Your Hydraulic Hose Needs Repairing
One of the most important and vulnerable parts of any hydraulic system is the hydraulic hose. This is because they are sometimes, easily caught on objects.
The life of a hydraulic hose depends on many factors such as:
The way they are used and the amount of contact they have with materials or actions that could damage them
The most likely causes for hydraulic hose failure are being pulled, kinked, abrasion, or being crushed
Under normal conditions the working life of a hydraulic hose is between one and three years
As Part of your maintenance program, it is advisable to keep a log of any hose or fitting replacements as well as the running hours, so you will have a more accurate idea of their life span in your operation
It is vital for hydraulic hoses to be regularly checked to ensure you prevent down time and possible damage to your hydraulic pumps and other moving parts through hydraulic fluid starvation when there is a rupture of leak from any fitting or hose.
These are five common signs that your hydraulic hose needs to be repaired:
Crushed Hoses
Because hydraulic hoses are often exposed, they are easily crushed through accidental impact or from moving rocks or other heavy objects. This can adversely affect their internal reinforcing which is often woven steel wire that can break or be damaged through impact. This can cause a pressure build up or weaken the wall of the hose so it can split or burst
Oil Leaks around the Hose
Having oil leaks around the hydraulic hose is a sure sign that the hose needs repairs. Possibly the whole unit needs to be replaced
Check the fittings, some fittings are crimped and are not reusable while some fittings are made to be reusable and can be undone, but these need to be checked carefully before reusing as they are then prone to leaking
Exposed Wire
This indicates that there has been sever abrasions or the rubber has been cut by impact, in either case it is advisable to replace the section of hose
Extensive Hose Damage
It’s expected that there will be a small amount of surface damage such as scuff and nicks to most hydraulic hoses during their normal operation, but there should not be excessive amounts. Sometimes they can be damaged by excessive heat or friction from rubbing.
If you are aware of this type of damage consider replacing them
Hose Kinks
Under normal conditions a hose should never kink, but if this occurs, it is likely to be because the hose is not the correct size or its routing has been altered. This will usually cause permanent damage or weakness unless found immediately and rectified
Cracked Fittings
If you find that the fittings on the hydraulic hoses are leaking it may be because they have loosened, are corroded or cracked. Often when a fitting is damaged the hose is also suspect and it is better to replace the whole unit.
Keeping your hydraulics running efficiently and without breakdowns starts with ensuring you hydraulic hose components are in good condition. Keeping a log on any repairs and looking out for any damage, or signs of kinking or crushing will help prevent breakdowns.

What are the advantages of Hydraulic Pump?
Hydraulic pumps have a real advantage over many other types of pumps for industry and private use. A pump is usually used to transfer substances such as liquids or gasses from one area to another. There are three main types of hydraulic pumps commonly used today, rotary vane type pumps, screw type pumps and gear pumps, these pumps are widely used in many industrial applications, for automotive and marine use.
All pumps require some form of external power source to operate; a hydraulic pump uses the kinetic power of water as its main source of operation as they transform mechanical energy to its new form of hydrostatic energy.
Hydraulic pumps can be powered by motors that run on petrol, diesel, gas or electricity to provide momentum. Some types of hydraulic pumps operate by gravity feed often from the same water source they are pumping from. Other use the natural elements,  these types of continuous running pumps are often used on farms to provide water. A good example is a windmill that uses a hydraulic pump to lift the water from deep in the ground, powered by the wind above.
For many years hydraulic pumps were very popular around the world for government, Industrial and commercial applications. With the introduction of the modern types of electric and solar type pumps, hydraulic pumps lost their popularity while these new types of pumps became more fashionable.
Because they are able to push a large amount of liquid over very long distances using a minimal amount of energy and have relatively low maintenance demands, they are now once again becoming more popular especially in developing countries.
They are relatively safe and efficient to operate, their three distinct advantages are:
Energy efficient
Hydraulic pumps generally use much less energy than other types of pump to do the same amount of work or shift the same volume of liquid. They are often rated as being as much as 80% more efficient that pneumatic type systems
Better, Runaway Control
Because of the setup involved a hydraulic pump is very unlikely to run dry unnoticed. This condition of running a pump dry, as can happen in a pneumatic system, almost always causes damage that forces the operator to lose valuable working time while it’s repaired. With a hydraulic system the speeds and flow control are much easier to look after and monitor than with any other type of system. This allows the operator to avoid pump runaway with its subsequent seal and package damage as well as the damage it causes to other hard, internal parts
Reduced Maintenance Costs
Overall maintenance costs are substantially lower for hydraulic pumps as they are self-lubricating and do not have the problems associated with pumps that rely on compressed air such as problems with moisture, areolated oils, scale and rust build ups. They also eliminate the problems of icing up which can occur when the pump’s cycles cause the cooling of rapidly exhausting compressed air.
Hydraulic Pumps are known to be one of the most energy efficient system for moving liquids or gasses and have been used around Australian farms for many years and well as in industry and commercial applications. They are becoming more popular now because of their low running costs.

What are different types of hydraulic hose fittings?
There are three main types of hydraulic hose fittings or connectors,
Metal Seal Connectors
Tapered Threads
Soft Seal Connectors
All hydraulic connectors need to fulfil two functions, they must seal and hold.
Sometimes one mechanism will provide both functions and sometimes they are done by using two parts of the same mechanism
Tapered pipe connectors
The first types of hydraulic connectors developed were tapered threads. These work because the threads are cut on a taper with the diameter of the pipe, changing along the threaded area of the pipe making the connection tighter as it’s done up.
Tapered pipe connections require a sealer to ensure they do not leak. This can be a tape sealant or the usually preferred method, a chemical sealant.
Often it’s difficult to orient tapered pipe threads correctly, which can cause a poor seal and a tendency to leak under pressure. These types of fittings can also damage other types of fittings they are connected to, such as cast iron or aluminum, which can deform because of the pressure needed to make the fitting tight.
Their disadvantage is they need to be welded or soldered to hydraulic tubes to make the connection.
Metal Seal Connectors
These types of connectors were developed because of the limitations common to tapered pipe thread connections.
A metal seal connector uses a tapered thread with the addition of a machined face that works as a seal that can cope with the high pressures that are involved in hydraulics. The thread allows for the holding power of the connector and the sealing is done by way of the machined face.
These fitting are easier to orient and seal better than the tapered connector and do not require an additional sealant. They do still need to be welded to the hydraulic tube and tend to have vibration issues.
Soft Seal Connectors
The more modern type of connector is the soft seal connector that uses an elastomeric seal that can be made either from natural or synthetic materials to prevent any chance of leakage even when under the high pressure of today’s hydraulic systems.
In most cases the sealing connector is a rubber “O” ring that forms the seal when compressed. The advantages of these types of connectors are that they are relatively quick to install or replace a feature that is often important in industrial and environmental applications with high volumes of production.
Another important advantage is that they are able to resist the vibrations that many hydraulic systems are subject to, resulting in less failures and breakdowns.
The main disadvantage of soft seal connectors is that their performance can at times be affected by environmental factors such as extreme heat or cold conditions and some types of hydraulic fluids are not compatible with some types of the elastic substances used to make the “O” rings.
Hydraulic hose fittings come in three types, the tapered thread type that requires some form of thread sealer to make a tight and leak proof seal, the metal seal type that used a machined flat metal surface to seal and the soft seal “O” ring type that is easier to install and resists vibration.
