every day i think about how non-binary identities take up most of hyrules population (gorons being identified as a genderless race, gerudo people also having a very non-binary gender system as a society composed primarily of fem-presenting individuals, koroks also being genderless spirits, rito and zora societies having a near imperceptible difference in how these individuals express their gender) and how hylians have probably self-imposed binary gender roles bc of a patriarchal turn in their very distant history (in the older games, we typically only hear about a king in action)

the main reason why i believe that zeIda is non-binary (not that anyone Needs one, i just think this is cool!) is because of their very deep connection to the past (it's not just ancient sheikah tech they've ever been hyperfixated on - they're obsessed with leviathans and ruins and hyrule's geographical changes across history). i like to think that hyrule, like most real-world societies, once revered non-binary identities and considered transcending the "physical form" a mark of one's enlightenment (i know the oocca look horrific but like tell me theyre Not gender) - and zelda's non-binary identity comes from being hylia's blood descendant and feeling a genuine connection to their indigenous roots (there is a direct line from the first zelda inhabiting hyrule down to them, after all) which is ultimately muddled and repressed by the modern binary expectation of the "silent princess" - hence why they are unable to connect with hylia and unlock their sealing powers
