I thought about this pond with a model of a flooded settlement (and a drop of Bingyi's blood stored inside)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then these shots of Ying Long and Bingyi against the backdrop of the flooded settlement.
Tumblr media
And then in the epilogue, this image of young Zhuo Yichen sitting alone near this pond.
Tumblr media
A lonely boy who does not see dreams - what was he thinking about, looking into this pond? What did he imagine? Whose image did he see on the mirror of water in the flickering flame of the lamps?
Did he imagine that this was not a small pond, but the whole world was flooded? That he was left alone in an empty world?
Did he imagine himself as a powerful creature with a shining sword, capable of killing any demon? And maybe sometimes, on the border between reality and sleep, it seemed to him that he saw in the water not his own reflection, but someone else.
Tumblr media
A friend who would destroy his loneliness? Or a demon that he was destined to destroy? On the border between reality and sleep, it's not very clear. But I have a feeling that Zhuo Yichen and Zhao Yuanzhou created each other in their imaginations long before they actually met.

Dear Grandpa,
a bunch of weirdos came to the temple today. I scared them! (Well, some one of them)
Tumblr media
The introductions went pretty well after that, and I did my best to remain polite, just as you taught me! :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turns out they're from the Demon Hunting Bureau, one of them is a super old demon himself (ever heard of him? The Great Demon? He seems to know you!), and they have the Baize Goddess with them, too!! I just didn't expect these two to be the biggest bullies of the group...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All's forgiven though, because they promised to help me achieve my dream!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you need me, I'll be at the Demon Hunting Bureau (as their chef)!

P.S. I shaved!

The impeccable "the aloof and the imp" dynamic. (I'd say "cat and dog," but ZYZ is already a monkey an ape... XD)

About Zhao Yuanzhou's personalities and their dreams.
Tumblr media
I see a clear symbolism in the fact that the diametric opposite of the crazy demonic part of Zhao Yuanzhou is the fantasy of a quiet life with Wen Xiao.
Tumblr media
And this makes sense regardless of whether you see their relationship as romantic or not (I prefer to see it as platonic).
When I saw this scene for the first time, I thought - " it is a perfect image of a mental health center". Nature, a simple quiet life, in some very isolated place.
If the "evil" part of Zhao Yuanzhou represents his greed for emotions and desire for absolute freedom. Then, fighting with this part, he turns to the other extreme - and this is the role of Wen Xiao in his life.
She is associated with an image of some kind of normality. Like a goddess, she has "pills", I mean, divine power, calming all demons. But what may be even more important is their history together.
When Zhao Yuanzhou was in a severe depression, the former goddess asked him to look after the young Wen Xiao. Probably not only for Wen Xiao's safety, but also for the demon's own mental stability. This contact could not cure Zhao Yuanzhou's depression, but such a calm presence in the life of another person gave support to his existence. And this is the beauty of their connection for me.
For me personally, this connection is not about passion, but about the fact that Wen Xiao gives others the strength to continue to be.
We often tend to underestimate the importance of such people in our lives. Their role is not as noticeable as those who make the heart beat faster and the soul sing. But in a difficult period, it is these people who separate us from jumping off a cliff. In this, I see the power of Wen Xiao as a person (not fully revealed, in my opinion, this could have been realized better), but as it was probably intended.
That is why she was able to grow that tree for three hundred years. It is not just about patience. It is the gift of being, which is different from the gift of life, but precedes it. The ability to give strength and stability to the world around. And to rely on reality as it is.
Therefore, it is Wen Xiao who represents for Zhao Yuanzhou the ability to exist without his entire internal opera theater of passions and desires. This part is stable, but it is absolutely separated at the other pole from his demonic part.
What is also symbolic is that in those moments when Zhao Yuanzhou does not argue with himself, but as if mixes in some kind of semi-delirium, he sees a completely different dream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this one is not at all peaceful and harmonious, it contains pain and a shade of nightmare, and at the same time it is also a way of life of his dream - the one in which Zhuo Yichen becomes a demon and takes the place in his life that Li Lun used to occupy.
Tumblr media
And this dream is feverish and painful, because only the one who can make him alive can kill him, and being alive goes with pain, fear and confusing, these two sides go together.

You're in a mountain god temple. I am the Mountain God, Ying Lei!
Fangs of Fortune, ep 7
Meet Ying Lei, the not so Little Mountain God and a master of putting his foot in his mouth since day one... I find it hilarious that he seems to have mistaken Bai Jiu for a girl not because of the kid's glass shattering screech, but because of his height. (And I only noticed Bai Jiu's reaction to that affront on the rewatch lol) Brownie points to ZYZ for making his husband laugh at their kiddo's expense XD

I actually loved this show so much! The main couple is way too cute (he's a scheming overly intelligent young lord who's pretending to be a fool and a bit of a jerk; she's the sole survivor of a clan (country?) his ppl killed back in the day and she's been made his servant and she's pretending to hate him and kill him on a regular basis but secretly adores him :D). They're incredibly sweet, I kid you not.
It's also a very cool old-school-looking wuxia with pretty fights and a very distinct vibe. Plus, the main protagonist is played by Zhang Ruoyun - the man could play a tree and make it fascinating. I still consider him one of the best c-actors out there who's consistently good at what he does (and he has amazing taste in projects he chooses to do).
Anyway, thanks dash for bringing this up, it's a very enjoyable little drama especially if you like the more traditional wuxia genre and deliciously smart characters.

Li Lun's display of jealousy is a mixture of murder, choking, and some stabby stabby. In other words, very explosive and dangerous for recipent.
On the other hand, Zhu Yan, or Zhao Yuanzhou as he later styled himself, did not show his jealousy in a dangerous or possesive way. His jealousy showed up in very petty manner.
After his death, the ways in which he could show his jealousy was very limited, but still very annoying to recipents.
Wen Xiao flirted with anyone as usual? Drizzle.
Xiao Zhuo looked at anyone for a moment longer? Rain.
Wen Xiao talked to someone sincerely for some time? Raining cats and dogs.
Xiao Zhuo got flirted by someone and he responded back in oblivious manner? Hail storm.
The worst of it was faced by Li Lun when he finally managed to cultivate human form and started accompanying Zhuo Yichen. Poor tree always had to endure a rain cloud hanging only over his head that would pour whenever he got closer to the former commander of demon hunting bureau. It painted a very comical sight, the serious former demon hunter followed by a man with a rain cloud raining over his head. Many were convinced that this was some sort of curse, but Li Lun knew better. He was aware of how petty and jealous that monkey could be.
But Li Lun was the pettiest of them all. And he had a perfect plan this time to deal with his ex.
"Is that-" Wen Xiao's voice cracked as she watched Li Lun who had siddled extremely close to Xiao Zhuo, closer than what decency would dictate. Beside her, Ying Lei sniggered, unable to help himself, hiding behind a weirded out Bei Jiu, while Pei Sijing rolled her eyes.
Zhuo Yichen was sitting under the shade of the umbrella, so he was unable to see what exactly had sent his friends into a hysterical fit. "Li Lun wanted to fix the Zhao Yuanzhou's umbrella. We even had to stay at the last village behind to wait for artisan to make repairs."
"It sure is a very... creative way to deal with your curse." Pei Sijing remarked, her lips twitching up.
Ying Lei was now rolling on the ground with laughter. "Zhuo darren, Li Lun darren, it was very kind of you to repair da yao's beloved umbrella. I am sure he would be very happy if he could see it."
As if an answer to that, the small localized cloud hanging on Li Lun cracked with thunder, pouring down much harder, as if trying to crack the oiled paper on the umbrella. Li Lun smugly adjusted the object, making sure to snugly cover himself as well as Zhuo Yichen under it.
"Oh I am sure he will be very happy indeed," Li Lun purred, the eye catching depiction of a small blue dragon tightly entertwined with a pagoda tree drawn on the umbrella glinted in the light.
As if in answer to his clearly provocative response, it rained even harder if it was possible.

There's something creepy romantic about death coming for the Prime Minister in that guise.

Well, the director of this play was probably Li Lun - and he has a certain sense of romanticism.
