Impactor and Ratchet met on Cybertron, in the midst of the war when Impactor, a Decepticon left for dead by his comrades, was saved by the Autobot medic. The two became extremely close, but as Cybertron began to go dark and Autobot ships departed the planet, they found themselves on different ships. While Impactor's ship survived the trip out to fight on in the rest of a vast, uncharted galaxy, the Ark, which Ratchet was on, wound up thousands of light years away due to a quantum malfunction, ultimately crash landing on Earth. Awakening on an alien planet after an unknown duration of time, Ratchet has no idea the fate of Impactor or anyone, really, other than the small portion of the crew of the Ark that crash landed on Earth.
