for the second year in a row, i have remembered the anniversary of Parallels exactly one day too late. (march 23)

anyways. happy late Parallels day. <3

noticed a pattern in how alice deslandes talks about her kids and now here's a post.

listen. sam's role in the deslandes family dynamic is largely reliant on him living up to his parents' idea of him as essentially "the easy kid to deal with". it's conditional on sam not being difficult. their treatment of their kids is determined by how easy it is to parent them.

"communication was easy with him, and now, i feel that- i feel like he's different. like his brother. arnaud and i failed at something with victor. i wouldn't want the same thing to happen with sam." - alice to sofia, episode 4.

"grounding you was so much easier than trying to understand you. it was the easy way out." - alice to victor, episode 6.

and yeah, victor's breakdown in the cabin was a sort of wake-up call that victor was hurting because of them. but. first, that didn't happen in the reset timeline. second, arnaud is notably silent for the majority of that scene; we have no idea if he actually learned anything from this. third, i don't think alice actually realized the full extent of what they had done wrong; their treatment of sam and victor was harmful to both of them. classifying your kids as "the problem kid" and "the easy kid", and treating them accordingly to the point where they can both tell what's going on - that's going to mess them up. both of them.

anyways. thinking about post-canon sam deslandes now. what if you internalized the idea that not being inconvenient/difficult was how to maintain your parents' affection and favorable opinion of you. what if that mindset stuck with you and bled into your interactions with other people. and what if you were fourteen years old and your opinion was the only thing keeping your brother from being sent away. what if you just remembered that your best friend gave up everything and risked his life to come back for you. what if all three of the closest people in your life suddenly had memories of grieving you. what if you still had school in the morning. what if you were fourteen years old.

post-canon sam deslandes........agh.

currently scrolling through the AtSV script and having brilliant thoughts such as "victor deslandes is spider-gwen coded" and "this is a masterpiece of a film" and "hm. kinda like Parallels (2022) episode 4 'Bygone Innocence' at the 28:40-29:39 episode timestamp." and "hey you know what'd be really devastating-" and other such groundbreaking insights. :)
