Barney is the perfect example of how to write a trans character.

Especially a trans character in a children’s cartoon. That in of itself is incredibly rare, the fact that he’s the main character even more so.

The story of DEPP (other than the side arc with Barney and his family) has virtually nothing to do with the fact that he’s trans, but is able to casually acknowledge it and get on with the damn plot.

The characters can have friendships and relationships without it needing to be a point of contention, or really even all that touched upon. Barney and Norma’s friendship is a perfect example of this.

That being said, the story doesn’t exclude the fact that’s trans from being an important part of his character, and the point that acceptance from your family members is the bare minimum is an incredibly important thing for children and parents to learn.

And the happy ending! We need more happy endings in LGBTQ+ stories! Even if it’s not always true to life, I think it could show parents how much their decisions can affect their children’s lives and that’s so fucking important to me as trans person who is currently experiencing almost the exact same thing.

And him being trans doesn’t make it impossible for to focus on other things! He’s still a well rounded and very well written character outside of his tranness, which is EXACTLY what we need!

And I didn’t even mention the gays love story between him and Logs, or the fact that he’s played by trans actor, just absolutely chef’s kiss all the way around incredible.

THIS is the kind of representation we need in children’s media.

I dunno know if this is an unpopular opinion or something I can weigh in on about (I'm not black), but I don't like how in TMNT, Raph is normally black-coded more than his brothers. He's the brother who is emotionally stunted and always aggressive, and he's the most black-coded turtle? I feel like that's kind of the worst black stereotype.

But again, I'm not black, so I can't weigh in on the conversation, but I haven't seen anyone speak out about it (other than my TMNT obsessed dad)
