The only thing that makes it hard to push through the darkness whipping around them to properly fight is the way Wei Wuxian’s lungs feel clogged, like he’s already filled them with air and there’s no further room for any inhale he tries to take. Not even screaming at the sight of a black dog that bites at the distracted newcomer that he’d initially attacked gets rid of the feeling - he coughs after he screams, feeling more and more on edge with every howl of the wind and heavy footsteps he hears around them both. He doesn’t listen to the commands shouted at him, he can’t listen to them, and only grips his sword more tightly as he looks around wildly, trying to breathe while also looking for the dogs that have snuck up on them both.
It could still be a trick, this person could very well be the very thing commanding the void and the dogs Wei Wuxian hears, but he’s so frightened at the sound of them he’s ready to jump on this person’s back if it means even a semblance of safety. Breathing is all he can do right now, even if he does try to listen and cover his mouth with the back of the hand still gripping tightly to Suibian’s hilt. Through his panic, Wei Wuxian can recognize just how dangerous this all is and how close to death he may be. He can now see the packs of black dogs stepping through the void, getting closer as they surround them both, and he can only hope this person that somehow broke through the darkness can take him back out of it.
Without any further hesitation, Wei Wuxian throws himself forward to grab onto the first thing he can of the man in white. His fingers slip over fabric until they meet skin that feels cold compared to his own, and he grabs tightly enough to bruise as he hears more bellowing barks over the winds. He shuts his eyes tightly and tries to hold his breath with what little air he has in him, shaking at the exertion of doing so and the panic that consumes his entire being.
When he was little, still an orphan living on the streets and hiding away from people that might snatch up those who won’t be missed, he often had to run from hungry street dogs that would make a young boy their next meal if they could. They’d steal whatever he’d manage to get for himself, bite and scratch without remorse and they always seemed to know that they could get it from him. Wei Wuxian was so terrified of dogs when he was first brought to Lotus Pier that all the ones there had to be sent away, and while he’s better adjusted at this point in his life, that fear still lives deep within him. Any time he hears a bark he can’t help but flinch and run if he must.
The stranger would probably throw him off, but if Jiang Cheng were here, he’d jump on top of him the moment he could so that the dogs wouldn’t bite his ankles…
❝ Wait!❞ Wei Wuxian tries to cough out, but his own voice is drowned out to his own ears, so he pushes closer so that the stranger might be able to read his lips. Like this, he can see nothing but this person’s face, and it actually helps calm him just a little. ❝ My shidi! Did you find him? You have to get him out too…!❞
Lan Wangji feels the pull of the Fog Calamity, this vile dark demon that likes to sink people in tornadoes, sucking out their misery through a bone straw. These half-cooked apparitions have no consciousness of their own. It is what separates them from Descendants, in the very end. They exist to eat from destructive emotions and spread evil qi around the mountains, where, sometimes, Descendants do not look. Except for Lan Wangji, there is no descendant for miles, perhaps even the next city over. The heirs of great Myths do not have a territory they are assigned to call their own. Wherever they choose to settle, it is then their responsibility. Lan Wangji understands that he is obliged to help humans, even though he is a descendant of Fu Zhu himself. A flood can save a village at the expense of another. Such is the law of omens. Lan Wangji considers the appearance of the Black Wind Calamity to be far from a coincidence. The awakening of Fu Zhu is just the beginning of the unexpected events that crept closer and closer to Chongqing.
And this stranger is not listening to him!
Lan Wangji furrows his eyebrows as the silver guqin string slaps another beast across the face, leaving a nasty, void scar behind. Howls drown out the wind in a battle for dominating the heart of the gale's resentment. They are not quite in the eye of the storm yet as the black tornado assembles, swallowing them whole. Lan Wangji's coat rips at the edges as the gusts slash like whips made of metal. A thousand blades come for him, maws agape and teeth bared, and the man whom he chases down refuses to grab onto his hand.
A sword answers him, and Lan Wangji barely dodges the swing, parrying it with a silver vibration. "Stop it!" He warns, calling out through the wheezing hatred around them. A black dog peers from the fog and sinks its rotten teeth into the Descendant's leg. He gasps and grits his teeth, turning his body to send the Tsunami's melody coiling like a snake around the beast's neck. A horrid crack thunders through the tornado's scream, and the beast falls limp, its neck broken, before it dissipates back into its foggy pack. Lan Wangji's white pantleg boils with red as his blood soaks through, leaving behind a prominent scent of divine weakness. "Put your sword down!" He orders as his eyes light back gold, forcing his sight to break through the Calamity's fog and find the frenzied human on the other side. Now he stands face to face with the man he was supposed to be rescuing, his leg injured and throbbing with pain.
"I am not your enemy." His voice is clear despite the wheezing wind. He sees beasts circling them as the tornado erases any sight of the mountains around them. To outsiders, this looks like a disaster, but inside, the two men finally find each other in the center where the dog packs stand, growling at them. Despite their menacing stance, Lan Wangji stands with a pristine posture untainted even with the presence of his wound. His face shows no pain, and his golden eyes are stuck on the impudent fool who pronounced him an enemy.
"We need to get out of here. Do not breathe!" Lan Wangji makes a motion toward his face, covering it with his palm so signal the dangers as the dancing melody around him grows louder, slapping away beasts that creep up from behind him. "Come with me, now!" He shouts, gathering his energy. He cannot fight like this much longer while limiting his energy. Lan Wangji already regrets that another human saw him today and now another ran into the Fu Zhu apparition in the worst possible moment.
This was only getting worse.

#vermillionfeathers#schemesandplots#lanctiflora#|| how dare all these void dogs show up he's so scared now ;-;

When he breathes, it feels like he’s inhaled something vicious, something that fights to reach the flames within his body. Wei Wuxian coughs as quietly as he can into his own hand, and keeps moving towards where he heard that voice call out from. He doesn't dare try calling out again, and he no longer hears anything trying to prompt him to do so. There's no sound except for the rushing of wind, and in the distance he could swear he heard the barking of dogs, but every time he looks around in panic he finds nothing but more darkness.
Clearly, he’d fallen into something’s trap. Wei Wuxian huffs once in frustration and regrets it, coughing again. “Urg,” he lets out, too focused on the terrible feeling that inhaling the void around him gave to even be aware of a presence near him.
The voice that calls to him makes him stiffen, and he draws his sword on instinct, swinging back to meet whoever was behind him. What he sees isn’t what he expected, but too many times in the past have nefarious creatures taken forms that would make even the most skilled of cultivators hesitate to raise their blade. This time, Wei Wuxian does not pause, continuing to swing Suibian through the air in an arc he knows will connect with the figure clad in white that managed to sneak up on him.
Just before it could connect, the blow is parried. Wei Wuxian takes a fighting stance, even as his insides burn with the need to purge whatever he’s breathed in out. “If you want to take me so bad, then make me,” he challenges, smirking in jest as he rushes forward to attack again.
The village was much smaller than Wei Wuxian had expected. There was a single road that stretched from entrance to exit, and alongside it was every building the people living there had. Sat at the base of a thick woods, it seemed like such a small spot that was easily missed unless one was searching for it. The trek to get there wasn’t easy, especially not with the added mist of rain that seemed to cloud around them the moment they stepped out of the south.
Wei Wuxian had felt the moment they crossed that border. An uncomfortable feeling sat in his chest - an urge that reminded him he did not belong here. Zhu Que were creatures of the south, there was no reason for him to be so far north! And yet Wei Wuxian pushed on, smiling to the few other disciples he and Jiang Cheng had traveled with as if nothing was off.
He could do without the misting, though. As much as he enjoyed the rain and water on his own time, this kind of weather was nothing but bothersome: it clouded their vision and chilled them to the bone. It was a relief to finally arrive at the village, but there was little reprieve to be found there at all. They could barely get a moment to rest inside a kindhearted woman’s home before they had to set off again, this time towards the woods. Something lurking within had begun picking off travelers and foragers from the village, to the point that worried parents forbade the children from going inside it at all. There was little information they could offer anyone that came by to help in the first place - and until the little group arrived, none had.
Sniffling, Wei Wuxian resisted trying to call for his fire to warm him up. He wasn’t so stupid as to use his power so carelessly, and the only people that knew just what he was at all were the Jiang’s. For tonight he’d have to suffer alongside the other disciples in the cold mist as they headed down the road that would take them deep inside the woods.
❝ Don’t wander far,❞ Jiang Cheng said to them all. He fixed a hard look at Wei Wuxian specifically. ❝ And don’t try anything stupid! We’ll meet back at the village no later than midnight.❞
❝ Just what do you think I’ll do, hm?❞ Wei Wuxian asked as he ran after his shidi. The rest of the disciples they came with wandered off in different directions after shouting quick goodbye’s.
❝ What I said!❞ Jiang Cheng snapped back. “Something stupid!❞
❝ So rude! Name just one time I’ve done anything stupid!❞
Goading Jiang Cheng into play fighting was easier than anything else Wei Wuxian had done in his life. He leisurely walked down the stone path they’d chosen as he listened and interjected to the rant he’d ignited, but quickly sobered up when he heard something in the distance. A sudden choke-hold feeling came over him - something dark, something that felt like it was reaching to smother the fire within him. Wei Wuxian grabbed his chest as if to stop it, coming to a stop along the path, and by the time he looked back up it was to see only a dark void. There was nothing around him but darkness, tempting him into changing forms just so that he could get some light.
The hand clutching his chest tightened its grip in his clothes, and Wei Wuxian clenched his jaw tightly as he suppressed that feeling. He wouldn’t do it.
Before he could think of a different plan, a voice cut through the darkness, coming from just ahead of him. He narrowed his eyes both in suspicion and to try to spot the source, but saw nothing. Cautiously, he took a step forward and called out, ❝ Here! I’m here!❞ His free hand reached to grip the hilt of his sword, prepared to draw it the moment anything came towards him.

@lanctiflora continued from here
For a creature of fire, Wei Wuxian quite enjoyed the feeling of warm lake water on his skin.
Bathing in it brought a strange sense of peace, calming any burning inferno within him. He had to assume it was due to the opposing elements that he found any joy in it - either that, or he had truly been driven mad as some people joked he did. But he couldn’t help it! He loved the water, eagerly awaiting every rainstorm to fly off into and seeking every river to take a quick dip in. It was a balm to his body and feathers, and he’d continue whether it hurt him or not.
Not that he knew if it did hurt him, but then again, it wasn’t like there was anyone around to tell him these things. Wei Wuxian had been orphaned long ago and lucky enough to be found and taken in by an old friend of his father’s. He picked up that his nature as a Vermilion Bird had to be from his mother’s side at least, but neither her or any others like her were here to tell or show him the ways of their kind. Hell, Wei Wuxian had to learn how to fly on his own - an embarrassing ordeal that resulted in more broken bones than he’d ever care to admit - so how was he to know if swimming was bad for him?
Slowly, he blew bubbles on the surface of the lake water from where he was floating. Nothing bad had happened yet - that was good enough reason for him to keep doing as he wished.
❝ Hey,❞ called a voice. Wei Wuxian sat up, looking to face the beautiful scowl of his shidi. He grinned in greeting, but Jiang Cheng only rolled his eyes. ❝ What are you doing?❞
❝ Relaxing,❞ Wei Wuxian replied, laying back in the water. ❝ It’s such a hot day! And we have time before we’re leaving, so why are you upset?❞
Jiang Cheng made his ‘I’m not upset’ face and sat down on the edge of the pier, daring to dip his feet in the water. Wei Wuxian swam closer, but was kind enough not to drag the other into the water as well. ❝ Nothing. We’ll have to get moving soon.❞
Wei Wuxian studied the look on his face, already sure of what he was seeing there. Another argument dished out right in front of him, likely about him - them. As much as he tried or wished to stop it, there was nothing he could truly do to put an end to the fights that Jiang Fengmian and Madam Yu got into. He stood up out of the water, quickly drying himself off with a quick burst of flame as he sat next to Jiang Cheng on the pier, and slung his arm around his shidi.
❝ Aiyah, so serious. It’s only a simple hunt, there’s no need to be nervous.❞
❝ I’m not nervous!❞ Jiang Cheng shouted, glaring at him. Wei Wuxian laughed bodily, throwing his head back in amusement and successfully starting a scuffle that only ended with the two of them back in the water.
It was only a simple hunt. They’d be traveling far further north than they ever had before, enough for Wei Wuxian to feel strangely out of place and on edge once they finally arrived at the small village, but what they were dealing with was nothing out of the ordinary. Even in the modern world, there were countless ghosts and creatures needing to be dealt with to ensure the safety of everyday people. Wei Wuxian boldly led the way through the streets with a forced bravado, trying to ignore the strange feeling itching the back of his neck. If there were any eyes on him, it had to be from the village people looking at the newcomers and nothing more.
This hunt was simply one of the same.

something on my face?
Wei Ying blinks, coming out of the stupor he hadn't realized he'd fallen into. At some point he'd started daydreaming while staring at Lan Wangji's face, too lost in his own thoughts to realize where his eyes had landed. Not that Lan Wangji was bad to look at in the slightest! But coming back to reality to find a cold face looking at him in suspicion was enough to make Wei Ying jump in his seat.
❝ Ah?❞ he asks, quickly looking away. A small part of him was embarrassed, but that part of him was easily pushed aside in favor of teasing as an idea came to him. With a wide grin, he looks back and sits up so that he can lean across the table set between them. ❝ There is! Here, let me get it for you, er-gege...❞
He reaches out, like he's about to wipe away a stray drop of ink or some fur leftover from petting some rabbits.

PROMPTS FOR THE ROMANCE OF BANTER, PLAYFUL SARCASM, AND USING JOKES TO HIDE HOW YOU REALLY FEEL ABOUT THEM * assorted dialogue, some of which have some implied sarcasm built in (so just feel free to specify with "/s" at the end of each line), adjust as necessary
admit it. you're in love with me.
if only i had someone to go out with...
a date would be really nice right about now.
i might reconsider if you bring me flowers.
were you being serious back there?
did you just try to impress me?
was that another joke, or were you telling the truth?
we agreed that if no one asked us, we'd go together.
keep telling yourself that!
here it comes! the big love confession i've been waiting for!
you've been in love with me since the day we met.
you visited me in my dreams last night.
i know you're in love with me. you just won't say it outloud.
we can't hide this forever.
don't make me beg.
if you weren't so cute, you'd be annoying.
you're not very good at hiding how you feel.
you've been staring at me for a long time now.
is that what you really think of me?
you have feelings for me. admit it.
so what if i've been lying this whole time? for good reason!
you don't make this whole love thing any easier.
you make life difficult.
you're a piece of work.
is that how you really feel?
you're lucky you're so cute.
you're not really going out with them, are you?
i thought we... nevermind.
consider me impressed.
am i annoying you right now?
you didn't like that comment, huh.
i was only kidding!
you wish we were kissing right now.
oh, you'd just love to hear me beg.
i love our little back and forth.
sooner or later we'll have to come clean about how we feel.
i'm not good at hiding my emotions.
when were you going to tell me you were in love with me?
i actually hate your guts.
keep talking like that and you'll see how i really feel.
can your head get any bigger?
was that a joke?
were you just playing with me?
you didn't actually mean that, right?
hang on. you didn't just say that.
that was a joke, right?
this is just how we are when we're together.
i tease you, you tease me.
you and i have always been like this.
if i'm not annoying you, what's the point?
i'm allergic to tickling.
they said we'd make a cute couple. can you believe that?
are you always this annoying?
if i kiss you, will you turn into a prince? yes, i'm implying you're a frog.
you're lucky i love you so much.
you take that back!
that was uncalled for!
this means war!
this calls for a duel!
i'm challenging you to an arm wrestle.
last one there is a rotten egg!
i'm not racing you!
stop looking at me like that.
you stare at me a lot.
i know, i know. i'm irresistable.
something on my face?
a little bird told me you're in love with me.
prove me wrong.

🙃 There are some things Wei Wuxian would never say to his past self. That doesn't change the fact that they are things he needs to hear.
It's definitely not a one to one translation, and it's not that representative of the fic as a whole, but this was *heavily* inspired by a scene in yiqie's fic The flower that withers.

@epistemologys commissioned me to draw a reimagined illustration of the Phoenix Mountain Kiss. In this version, LWJ doesn’t run away just as WWX kisses back.
It ended up with a very wrecked, sweaty WWX getting his boobas fondled. Yeah, this extremely was fun.
THANKS EPI!!!!
