Hades gives Orpheus a trial he knows he himself could never succeed at, but it isn’t just that Hades knows he would turn around. Hades has been failing this trial every single year. He shows up too early. He turns too soon. He is so full of doubt that even the natural order of the world, that Persephone will return to him, is not something he can trust. Hades would fail the trial he has given Orpheus, and he already has. All alone, his blood runs thin.

Scientific Method
by James Tadd Adcox
Picture the ocean. No. Picture the entire thing, all at once. You are not doing it. It’s okay. One day something terrible will happen, and I will not be prepared.

Mr. Bennet: Sure, I haven't taken care of my daughters' financial security, but have I at least taken care of their education? No. But have I taken care of their emotional needs? Also no. But have I been a good protector and supervisor? I'm afraid not. However, have I been a good example for my children of being a kind and respectful spouse, parent, and all around human being? No again. But through it all, have I nailed being funny? Yes. And isn't that the most important role of a father after all?

When Faith Feels Heavy: Should You Leave Christianity?
Christianity, at its core, is not about rules, rituals, or traditions alone—it’s about a relationship. It’s about encountering a God who loves you so deeply that He sent His Son to walk this earth, to feel your pain, and to die so you might live. But life as a Christian isn’t always easy, and sometimes it feels like it isn’t enough to lift the weight of your struggles. You might even feel like it’s making you unhappy.
But before you think of leaving, I’d encourage you to pause and ask yourself: What is at the root of this unhappiness? Is it the expectations of others? Is it the fear of not measuring up? Is it the weight of guilt or shame? Sometimes, we mistake our own pain or confusion for something God has placed upon us when, in truth, God longs to carry our burdens, not add to them.
Jesus never promised an easy life; in fact, He said, “In this world, you will have trouble.” But He also said, “Take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Christianity isn’t about pretending everything is perfect—it’s about finding hope and peace in a God who never leaves you, even in the darkest valleys.
If your faith feels heavy right now, it’s okay to admit that. God is big enough to handle your questions, your doubts, and even your desire to walk away. Sometimes, the unhappiness we feel is a signal to go deeper, to strip away the noise, and to rediscover the heart of Christianity: love.
If you’re struggling, lean into God’s Word, talk to Him honestly, and seek wise counsel. And know this: God’s love for you is unshakable, whether you stay, wrestle, or walk away. But leaving Christianity won’t stop Him from pursuing you, because His love never gives up.
You are precious to Him, and no matter where your journey takes you, He will never stop calling you home.

a pastor-in-training and a pagan walk into a bar...
jk thats not what its titled. but here's a poem I wrote and really liked for my narrative collection :)
ActOne.Sceneone.png
Set the scene:
Seminary coffee, youth in its tricky charms.
Seminal confectioner’s smile,
Chaos theory in a silver chain
Hung from your neck,
Hanging on your every word.
What do you believe in, pretty leather?
Classical pagan with its lusty invitations,
Dark hair and dark eyes and a pretty pretty gleam.
xxx
Mythologize me, sweet Eurydice–
Though you’re the better poet.
Write me into a universe where I can walk into hell,
The one I still can’t bring myself to believe in.
(it’s a metaphor of closeness, I told you)
Hell is a one-act play,
And you always loved to play with fire.
(hell is the absence of God, not the presence of sin)
Write me a world where I bring you back from the wrath.
(please, please stop walking toward it)
Turn us starry-eyed,
Paint us a world where nobody leaves
(hell is a parable and I can’t love you in metaphor)
Where bones can break
And bones can mend
And nothing ever hurts (you)
And bones are only bones
And blood never stains (me)
Write an ending where the car won’t skid.
Hold in your hands a merciful God
And ask Him nicely this time
(please?)
Write and ending where the mothers don’t shake their heads
And nothing is immortalized
Except you, in life,
In a poem where everything is August
And love is novel and soft.
Write me a prayer that can’t burn,
I’ll build our pantheon out of brick and water.
