The thing that drives me absolutely feral about Twilight/Loid Forger is that there is no name that can actually describe him.

He is Twilight; Twilight is a spy, and nothing else. He takes pride in his missions and compartmentalises them completely and cleanly as soon as they are over. He could have any face, any body, any gender, and he will play the part perfectly; he is known as a colleague to look up to, or an enemy to be feared. Twilight is not a person, but some person, whose name we never know, is Twilight.

(The man who is Twilight wants things that Twilight cannot want, let alone have.)

He could have been [redacted], but he is not. The name does not describe him. He was [redacted] once, and that time changed him, but he could never be that boy again and he has seemingly no desire to reconnect with who he once was. You could guess at what [redacted] is, but that would be missing the point.

He is Loid Forger; or, at least, he could be. He loves his wife ("for the mission"), he loves his daughter ("for the mission"), and he cares deeply about the life he lives in a way that he fears he should not. He does love them. Loid Forger is not a real person. The life he lives is fabricated, but he still lives it, so it has to be real in some sense. The people who he loves, and the people who love him, know him as Loid Forger; but he could never be Loid Forger, not without caveats. Loid Forger has not disarmed nuclear warheads. Loid Forger lost his first wife. Loid Forger does not know that his brother in law is in the secret police. Loid Forger has a name.

(As Loid Forger, Twilight is able to live the life that he doesn't have a right to admit he wants; and there is something real about Loid. But it cannot—and does not—encompass a very large part of who he is. As of such, Loid Forger is not his "real" name.)

It's just. Aaaaaah.

I feel like the manga is a teensy bit more explicit with it than the anime, in that there's more of a sense of Loid Forger as a construction and a mask, but yeah. I think the text is moving towards a sense that Loid Forger is as real of a name as any name, but it's certainly open to interpretation.

Not here to fight but i think both statements are true to a degree ART has means to enforce its own choices, and, yes, most people it interacts with are fairly respectful of its autonomy (not saying it's perfect but they do mean well). But there is a difference between people being nice to you and actually having rights. ART doesn't have LEGAL freedom and autonomy due to its existence being a secret.

I.e. no I don't think the university is secretly evil or something but the situation is quite complicated. It's actually similar to the situation with legal status of constructs on Preservation.

All in all, i think it comes down to the importance of the world's equivalent of human rights - freedom shouldn't be an exception. It shouldn't rely on good will of other people. It should be a legally protected right, not 'i have guns so don't mess with me' situation.

I keep seeing posts about ART lacking bodily autonomy due to the university and... What? I don't understand where this is coming from. Art:

Decides to allow a passenger it's not supposed to

Controls life support and every other function such that it's made of

Creates its own furnishings (clothing)

Is an asshole even though the university would rather it not (and it's family would rather it rein it in sometimes)

Keeps secrets

Commits fraud??!!

Refuses to talk to other MI

Has weapons

Are you saying there's some other freedom you have that ART does not? Considering lack of autonomy is a huge aspect of all the stories and ART losing autonomy is a central horror plot point, it sure seems to me like ART has more autonomy than 99% of the people in that world. More than most in our current world, since it could f off and go to other solar systems if it felt like it.

So, I’m awkward with actual humans. It’s not paranoia about my hacked governor module, and it’s not them; it’s me. I know I’m a horrifying murderbot, and they know it, and it makes both of us nervous, which makes me even more nervous. Also, if I’m not in the armor then it’s because I’m wounded and one of my organic parts may fall off and plop on the floor at any moment and no one wants to see that.
