When reading fanfic keep in mind that for professional literature: 

Short story: under 7,500

Novelette: between 7,500 and 17,500

Novella: between 17,500 and 40,000

Novel: over 40,000

Fics over 40k are literally a novel written and shared for free.  If you have written a 40k+ fic, you have literally written a novel.

My issue with likes is that they’re so passive. All that effort a writer puts into writing, editing, formatting, creating headers/dividers/fonts/whatever, and then all a reader can do is like?

Don’t get me wrong, if all you want to do is hit that like button then fine, you do you, at this point it’s pretty obvious that this way of interacting with fanfic is not going to change on here, but don’t get mad that your passive response to a lot of effort for your free consumption is only met with a lukewarm response.
