god said let’s make a girl who will be heart achingly lonely in her bones and always feel like a stranger in this world who doesn’t belong in any room she’s in and always has one foot out the door

No but I keep thinking about The Newsreader and the conscious choice for Helen to not wear makeup (or wear very minimal makeup) when she isn’t on camera or dressed up for an event. Could it be practicality? Sure. But to me it’s one of Helen’s best power moves. She doesn’t give a fuck. And it becomes even more apparent in season 3. The only time we really see her waiver is in season 1 when she knows she’s gonna meet Val, and even with makeup on, she’s like, “No I still need to have Cheryl get me camera ready!” Forget what everyone else thinks, she has to impress the “in-law.” By the end of the series, she’s running the office and the show, and even in the board room full of men where she’s telling them “this is what I want, and I will not take your deal” she hasn’t bothered (or it doesn’t appear so.) Doing wonders out here for us no-makeup girlies. (Also something, something…letting people see women age naturally.)

i want to be good. (i want you to fear me.) i want to do what's kind, and gentle, and right. (i want to rip it all to pieces with my teeth.) i want to make the world a better place. (i want to shove my suffering down the throat of the world and watch it choke.)

The most haunted girl I ever knew […] shivered and cried at everything the dark at music at the sky and the rain screaming for a reason we could not know at trees and creeks and roads always spinning breathlessly trying to free herself from the unbreakable webs of wraiths always spinning choking on nothing but air.
