”No one ever became a better writer by reading all their 1-star reviews on Amazon.” - Seth Godin If you want to maintain longevity in any creative endeavor, one of the first things you will figure out is that the naysayers are everywhere and there is nothing you can do to win them all over. You’ll have to start learning how to ignore the hateful nonsense that flies at you from every direction when you start sharing your work with the world. Make a choice to forgive them and walk away from stupid arguments. Especially stupid internet arguments. They’re a dime a dozen. My wife and I started a blog in 2009 that received over half a million hits from all over the world in the first few years of its existence.  We started it as a way to share our journey and our perspectives on love, hope, faith and life.  It also became a place where many who were disillusioned, hurt and burnt out from religious institutions came to ask questions, seek advice, and connect with others like them. As our influence increased, so did the criticism.  And as the criticism increased, so did my frustration with the critics.  One of the greatest lessons that I have learned (and oftentimes still have to remind myself) is that the worst thing you can do towards your critics is to retaliate.  I spent so much time and energy trying to win the critics over to my perspective that, years later, I found myself wondering what I could have done with all that time and energy! What if I hadn't spent it arguing with people who were committed to disagreeing with me?  What if I had spent that time and energy investing in the lives of those who cared about us?  All those what if’s can still haunt me to this day. One thing is for certain… You will never please everyone.  Read that again. You will NEVER please everyone. Okay, now go look in the mirror and say this to yourself out loud: ”I WILL NEVER PLEASE EVERYONE.” Feels good, doesn't it? To finally be honest with yourself and admit that attempting to make everyone happy all the time is a futile battle to fight? Bill Cosby is often quoted as saying that he doesn't know the key to success, but that the key to failure is trying to please everybody. I assure you that the satisfaction you will get from knowing you have positively impacted someone's life is infinitely greater than what you get from winning an argument with someone who is criticizing you.  The naysayers disappear when you have achieved that which they said you could not do.  Sure, new ones will pop up and find something else to critique and project their negativity at you - but you can take comfort in knowing that you have achieved what others deemed impossible. So ignore the haters, march onward, and do something amazing - for you, not for them.  ---  get this design on merch: http://goo.gl/usps4T by Ryan J.
