Been consuming things, books even.

Read an excellent if questionably formatted post about Mercymorn. Got my gummed up brain whirring.

The posters basically about how Mercymorn was full of love but everyone hated her because she was "annoying".

A very specific detail came to mind, when she constantly complains about Harrow being a baby, it's because Mercy is appalled.

Not at Harrow though, no I think Mercy is frustrated because she's been forced into a caretaking role well also plotting to destroy John and end Lyctors once and for all.

But the most interesting part is how horrified she seems to be that John was a okay with having teenagers make one of the most disturbing and impactful decisions of their lives with brains that haven't fully formed.

Mercy would know better than anyone, being an anatomy expert. Making children decide whether or not to kill one of their closest companions and devour their souls to live forever is revolting.

Horrifying.

Mercy was a good person who made the mistake once herself. When she was a (relatively) fully formed adult.

The rampant misogyny tearing through the locked tomb universe is fascinating to examine, because it's there. A lot of my friends who have read these books seem to be much less harsh on the guy characters compared to the women.

Especially if those women are "annoying" or nag a lot, or don't want to be caretakers or remind everyone to stay responsible or have big emotions.

I'm not condemning anyone here, at least no one outside of the books. It's fascinating and frustrating.

Mercy deserved better. My queen.

I feel like Mercy really is such a layered character, a bundle of grief and love turned sour over time, and she mirrors harrow in so many interesting ways… basically I miss her and I hope that we learn more about her in Alecto!
