Ulf is a great character, I do not like Ulf
Some musings on one of the characters from The Next Unknown By @themarshmallowattack
(Full disclaimer I have not gone back to read the chapter(s) Ulf first appears oops)
At first, while reading I was like: āwhy, whhhhhyyy does Ulf treat her this way, what the hell itās awful TT__TTā. But after actually taking a moment to sit with it, I believe I understand whatās happening.
It feels like Ulf treats Elsa how she feels she should be treated... where Anna is concerned. Ulf is an indication that Elsa still wrestles with self loathing and guilt (hardly a stretch, after all it is Elsa). Looking back to the moment she made Ulf (as far as I can recollect), the strongest emotions in that moment were triggered by being unable to reach Anna; after all this time, it was one more instance Elsa couldnāt be there for Anna when she needed it. Another moment when sheād failed her, during potentially the most fatal of circumstances.
Elsa essentially created a version of herself in wolf form for Anna; one utterly devoted to her protection and possessing an empathy so strong it appears to feel Annaās emotions as she does. One also filled with all of Elsaās self loathing, now turned back on her as hate.
Itās as though Ulf looks at Elsa the way Elsa, in her worst moments, feels Anna should look at herā with wariness, distrust, always assuming Elsa will hurt her...
Itās one thing to see Elsa internalize and feel those things about herself, but it is so different to have that directed back at her from an outside sourceā one that doesnāt view (isnāt capable of viewing?) her or her circumstances with any compassion. Add to that itās part of her magic, a sentient being she created, and itās indifferent to her at best, downright hostile towards her at worst?
I do not like
I do not like
Not to mention, as far as I can remember/tell, Elsa herself doesnāt seem to realize the origins of Ulfās behavior? She just accepts it because, well of course she deserves to be treated that way.

December Contest Submission #10: Echoes of You
Words: ca. 5,500
Setting: modern AU
Lemon: no
Content: n/a
******************
Murky light filtered into the apartment through sheer damask curtains. Another grey morning, full of clouds that blocked the sun but refused to provide any rain. Existing in a state in between.Ā
Anna could relate.Ā
Nestled in bed, she blew out a noisy breath through her mouth, staring up at the ceiling. Familiar patterns and faces morphed in the plaster before fading again, like the hazy pieces of her dream. The phantom touch of a hand clasped in hers lingered; Anna hadnāt seen the face, but she knew who it belonged to. All that remained of the dream were uncomfortable remnants, squirming in her chest like the last bitter dregs of coffee at the bottom of the cup.Ā
In a perfect world sheād be able to press skip on this whole day. And the rest of the year.Ā

The Three Laws of Fandom
If you wish to take part in any fandom, you need to accept and respect these three laws.
If you arenāt able to do that, then you need to realise that your actions are making fandom unsafe for creators. That you are stifling creativity.
Like vaccination, fandom only works if everyone respects these rules. Creators need to be free to make their fanart, fanfics and all other content without fear of being harassed or concern-trolled for their creative choices, no matter whether you happen to like that content or not.
The First Law of Fandom
Donāt Like; Donāt Read (DL;DR)
It is up to you what you see online. It is not anyone elseās place to tell you what you should or should not consume in terms of content; it is not up to anyone else to police the internet so that you do not see things you do not like. At the same time, it is not up to YOU to police fandom to protect yourself or anyone else, real or hypothetical.
There are toolsĀ out there to help protect you if you have triggers or squicks. Learn to use them, and to take care of your own mental health. If you are consuming fan-made content and you find that you are disliking it - STOP.
The Second Law of Fandom
Your Kink Is Not My Kink (YKINMK)
Simply put, this means that everyone likes different things. Itās not up to you to determine what creators are allowed to create. Itās not up to you to police fandom.Ā
If you donāt like something, you can post meta about it or create contrarian content yourself, seek to convert other fans to your way of thinking.Ā Ā
But you have no right to say to any creator āI do not like this, therefore you should not create it. Nobody should like this. It should not exist.ā
Itās not up to you to decide what other people are allowed to like or not like, to create or not to create. Thatās censorship. Donāt do it.
The Third Law of Fandom
Ship And Let Ship (SALS)
Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.
Itās not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.
You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.
It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.
These three laws add up to the following:
You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasnāt to your taste. Thatās the height of bad manners.
Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.

Elsa has loved Anna, unconditionally, irrevocably, since the moment she was born.
Only years later does she realize that love has transformed in a way she never anticipated, with ramifications she never could have expected.

Elsa was three years old when her world changed forever.Ā
It was high summer, and the castle had reached a fever pitch of frenetic activity as the entire kingdom awaited the birth of the queenās second child. Her labor was longer and more fraught than that of her first child, the crown princess; Elsa was an easy baby from the moment she came into the world as Arendelleās heir.
The princess sat quietly in her room with a nursemaid while they waited for news. When the king came to get her hours later, Elsa took her fatherās hand, a strange premonition building with each step closer to her parentsā room.Ā
Her mother was propped up in bed, looking drained but radiant. Instantly, Elsaās eyes were riveted to the swaddled bundle in the queenās arms. Her hand fell from her fatherās grip, and she padded up to the bed in hushed anticipation. The bundle was titled towards her so she could see, and a scrunched little face with a head of bright, strawberry blonde hair came into view.Ā
